 <51>

어떤 형제가 다른 형제의 감정을 상하게 하였을 때 그 당시의 형제들이 화해를 하는 관습에 대하여.

그는 죄의 어둠에 빠져 있는 사람들에게 본보기라 되도록 하느님께서 최근에 작은 형제들을 보내 주셨다고 항상 말하였다. 세상에 흩어져 있는 거룩한 형제들의 큰 업적에 대한 이야기를 들을 때마다 자기는 몹시 향기로운 향수에 목욕한 것 같고 귀중한 연고와 같은 미덕을 바른 것 같다고 했다.

어느 때 형제 중 한사람이 지브로섬의 한 귀족 앞에서 다른 사람에게 거친 말을 하였다. 그러나, 이로 인해 자기 형제가 약간 화가 났다는 것을 알고는 즉시 자신을 질책하고 당나귀 똥을 입게 집어넣고 씹으면서 “내 형제를 화나게 한 독소를 씻어 낼 혓바닥은 똥맛이 어떤가를 알아야 될 것이다!:하고 말했다. 이를 본 귀족은 놀랐으며 많은 감화를 받았다. 그 후로 그는 자기 자신과 자기 전 재산을 형제들의 처분에 맡겼다.

모든 형제들은 누구나 다른 형제의 감정을 상하게 하는 말을 했을 때는 즉시 땅에 엎드려 그 형제의 발에 키스하고 겸손하게 용서를 비는 습관을 엄수하였다. 거룩한 사부께서는 자기 아들들이 화해의 성스러움에 앞장서고 있다는 말을 들을 때마다 매우 흐믓해 하였으며, 죄인들을 말과 행동으로써 하느님 사랑으로 이끌고 있는 형제에게는 아낌없이 축복을 보냈다. 왜냐하면 자기를 채운 뜨거운 영성을 자기의 아들들이 닮아 주기를 바랐기 때문이다.

On the custom by which the friars in those days effected a reconciliation when one friar had offended another.

 

He used to say that the Friars Minor had been sent by God in these latest days to set an example to those who were shrouded in the darkness of their sins. He said that whenever he heard about the great achievements of holy friars who were scattered all over the world, he was bathed in the sweetest of perfumes and anointed with the virtue of precious unguents.

 

On one occasion one of the friars happened to speak harshly to another in the presence of a nobleman of Cyprus. Directly he realized that his brother was somewhat distressed by this, he was angry with himself, and taking up some ass’s dung, ‘The tongue that has poured out the poison of anger against my brother shall see what dung testes like!’ The nobleman who saw this was struck with amazement, and went away much edified; and thenceforward he placed himself and all his property at the disposal of the friars.

 

All the friars observed a custom that whenever any of them said anything hurtful or offensive to another, he would at once throw himself to the ground and kiss the feet of the offended brother, humbly asking his pardon. The holy Father was very happy whenever he heard that his sons were setting examples of holiness of their own accord, and he lavished most acceptable blessings on friars who brought sinners to the love of Christ by word or deed. For he desired that his sons should bear a true resemblance to him in the zeal for souls that filled him so completely.
