순명하도록 너무 서둘러 명령하는 것이나 명령에 순명하지 않는 것은 위험한 일이라고 하다.

성 프란치스코는 순명해야 할 명령이 내려져야 하지만 자주 내려져서는 안 되며 또한 그것은 당장에 사용할 무기가 아니라 최후의 수단으로 사용할 무기라고 생각하였다. 그는 “너무 성급하게 칼에 손을 가져가서는 안 됩니다.”고 하였다. 망설일 이유가 없는데도 순명하도록 내린 명령을 시행치 않으면 하느님을 두려워하지도 인간을 존중하지도 않는 것이라고 그는 항상 말하였다. 이보다 더 진실한 것은 없다. 왜냐하면 무모하게 명령을 내리는 사람의 권위는 성난 사람의 손에 쥐여 있는 칼과 같기 때문이다. 순명을 대수롭지 않게 여기거나 소홀히 하는 수도자보다 더 쓸모없는 사람이 또 누가 있을까?

How it is dangerous to give an order under obedience too hastily, or to disobey an order given under obedience.

 

The blessed Father considered that an order under obedience should be given but seldom, and that it was a weapon not to be used in the first instance, but in the last resort. He said, ‘The hand should not be laid on the sword too hastily.’ He used to say that when a man has no pressing reason to delay, then if he does not quickly obey an order given under obedience he neither fears God nor respects man. Neither is anything more true than this, for the authority to command in the hands of a person who uses it rashly is like a sword in the hand of an angry man. And who is more abandoned than a Religious who ignores or despises obedience.
