 <48>

완전 순명을 시신에 비유하다.

한번은 동료와 함께 앉아 있다가 한탄하면서 말하였다. “세상에 자기 장상에게 잘 순명하는 수도자가 단 한 사람도 없다니!” 그 때 그의 동료가 “사부님, 저희들에게 말씀해 주십시오. 완전하고도 가장 훌륭한 순명이란 무엇입니까?”라고 물었다. 그는 시체에 비유하면서 참된 완전 순명을 이렇게 설명하였다. “시체를 들어서”하고 말했다. “여러분이 원하는 곳으로 가져다 놔 보십시오, 그 시체는 자리를 옮겨 놨다고 반항하지도 않으며, 그 자리에 물만하지도 혼자 남아 있게 해 달라고 요구하지도 않는다는 것을 여러분은 잘 알고 있습니다. 의자 위에 올려 놔진다 해도 그것은 눈을 치켜뜨지도 내려 감지도 않습니다. 자주빛 옷을 입혀도 언제나 창백하게 보입니다. 마찬가지로 진실로 순명하는 사람은 자기가 왜 이동되는가를 묻지 않고 자기가 어디 놓여 있는지 개의치도 않고 이동되도록 요구하지도 않습니다. 높은 자리로 승진된다 하더라도 그전처럼 겸손하고, 자기가 명예를 얻게 되면 얻을 수록 자기 자신은 더욱 무가치해진다고 생각합니다.”

성 프란치스코는 부탁보다 오히려 직접적이고 단순한 명령을 받을 때마다 그것은 성스런 순명을 요구하는 것으로 생각하였다. 그러나 피와 살이 아무 역할도 하지 못하는 가장 고결한 형태의 순명은 자기 동료를 돕기 위해서든 순교자가 되고 싶어서든 성령의 감도에 따라 비 신자들 가운데에 뛰어드는 일이라고 그는 믿고 있었다. 그는 순교한다는 것은 하느님께 진실로 흐믓하게 해드리는 일이라고 생각하였다.

How he compared perfect obedience to a dead body.

 

Once. While he was sitting with his companions, he voiced this complaint: “There is hardly a single Religious in the whole world who obeys his superior well!’ His companions at onc　e said to him, ‘Tell us, Father, what is the perfect and best from of obedience?’ In reply he described true and perfect obedience under the simile of a dead body. ‘Take up a dead body,’ he said, ‘and lay it where you will. You will see that it does not resist being removed, or complain of its position, or ask to be left alone. If it is lifted on to a chair, it does not look up, but down. If it is clothed in purple, it looks paler than ever. In the same way, one　 who is truly obedient does not question why he is moved, does not mind where he is placed, and does not demand to be transferred. If he is promoted to high office, he remains as humble as before, and the more he is honoured, the more unworthy he considers himself.’

 

Wherever blessed Francis received direct and simple commands, rather than requests, he regarded them as commands under holy obedience. But he believed that the highest from of obedience, in which flesh and blood plays no part, is to go among the unbelievers under the inspiration of God, either to help one　’s fellow men or with a desire for martyrdom. He considered that to seek martyrdom was truly acceptable to God.
