자유롭게 강론하도록 허락해 달라고 하는 형제들에게 대답하다.

몇몇 형제들이 성 프란치스코에게 “사부님, 주교님께서는 때때로 우리들이 강론하는 것을 허락하지 않으시며 또 하느님 말씀을 강론하기 전에는 여러 날 동안 한 곳에 서성거리지 못하게 하신다는 것을 잘 아시지요? 이 문제에 대해서 사부님이 교황님께 관면을 요청하신다면 더 나을 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 구령문제와 관계가 있기 때문입니다.” 고 하였다.

그러자 그는 그들을 몹시 나무라며 말하였다. ‘작은 형제들인 여러분은 하느님의 뜻을 이해하지 못하고 있으며 내가 하느님의 뜻대로 이 세상을 회심시키지 못하게 하는군요. 나는 먼저 우리의 성스런 겸손과 존경심으로 주교님들을 개심하도록 하고 싶습니다. 그들이 거룩하게 살고 있는 생활 방식과 그들에 대한 우리의 겸손한 경외심을 보게 된다면 그들은 여러분이 강론하여 사람들을 회심시켜 주도록 요청하게 될 것입니다. 이렇게 될 때 여러분은 특전에 의하기보다는 여러분의 강론으로 사람들을 훨씬 더 잘 이끌어 들이게 될 것입니다. 특전이란 여러분의 자만심만을 끌어내기 때문이지요.

만일 여러분이 탐욕에서 벗어나 사람들을 교회에 대한 올바른 상태로 되돌려 놓을 수 있다면 주교님들은 여러분에게 사람들의 고백을 들어 주도록 부탁할 것입니다. 이러한 문제에 대해서 여러분이 관심을 가질 필요가 없긴 하지만 그들이 일단 회심이 되면 독실한 신앙인을 쉽사리 찾아 내게 될 것입니다. 내 경우, 하느님께 간청躍?단 하나의 청은 사람들로부터 어떤 호의도 결코 받아들이지 않도록 해 달라는 것입니다. 나는 모든 이들에게 존경심을 표하고 싶습니다. 거룩한 회칙에 순명함으로써, 말보다는 내 자신이 수범함으로써 모든 사람들을 회심시키도록 말입니다.“

How he answered friars who were persuading him to ask permission for them to preach freely.

 

Some of the friars said to blessed Francis, ‘Father, do you not realize that sometimes the bishops will not allow us to preach, and make us wait around idle in one place for many days before we can preach the word of God? It would be better if you sought some privilege from the Lord Pope in this matter, for it concerns the salvation of souls.’

 

He answered them with a stern rebuke, saying, ‘You Friars Minor don’t understand God’s will, and won’t allow me to convert the whole world in the way God wills. For first of all I want to convert the bishops by our holy humility and respect. When they come to see our holy way of life and our humble respect for them, they will ask you to preach and convert the people. These things will draw people to your preaching far better than your privileges, which would only lead you into pride.

 

‘And if you are free from all avarice and can persuade the people to restore their rights to the churches, they will themselves ask you to hear the confessions of their people; although you need not concern yourselves on this matter, for once they are converted, they will easily find confessors. For my part, the only favour that I ask of God is that I may never receive any favours from men. I wish to show respect to everyone, and by obedience to the holy Rule, to convert all men by my own example rather than by words.’
