겸손을 완성하기 위하여 모은 형제들이 나병 환자들에게 봉사하기를 바라다.

성 프란치스코는 현명한 건축업자처럼 하느님께로 귀의하던 첫날부터 성자의 완전한 겸손과 가난을 바탕삼아 하느님의 도우심으로 자신을 확립해 갔다. 그리고 그의 깊은 겸손으로 자기 수도회를 작은 형제들의 회라 불렀다.

형제회를 설립하였을 때 그는 형제들에게 나병 환자에게 봉사하기 위해 나병 환자의 집에 기거하도록 하며 그렇게 함으로써 성스런 겸손으로 자신을 확립하도록 했다. 형제회에 들어가면 부여된 또 하나의 저서 가운데 귀족이든 평민이든 회칙에 기록된 대로 나병 환자에게 공손히 봉사해야 하고 그들이 집에서 그들과 같이 살아야 한다는 것이다; 하늘 아래서 성스런 가난 외에 그 무엇도 가질 수 없다. 가난 속에서만이 주님에 의해 영의 양식으로 이 세상에서 살찌게 될 것이며 다가올 내세에서 천국의 유산을 받게 될 것이다.

그래서 그는 자기 자신과 다른 이들을 위해 깊은 가난과 겸손위에 그 초석을 다졌다. 그것은 그가 하느님 교회 안에서 수도자가 되었을 대 교회내에서 뿐만 아니라 자기 형제들에게도 겸손하기로 마음 먹었고 또한 겸손하고자 한 그의 소신과 소망대로었다. 이러한 낮ㅊㅁ은 하느님과 인간의 눈 앞에서 가장 고귀하게 되는 것이기도 하였다.

How, in order to establish humility, he wished all the friars to serve lepers.

 

From the first days of his conversion blessed Francis, like a wise builder, established himself with God’s help on the firm rock of the perfect humility and poverty of the Son of God. And because of his own profound humility, he called his Order that of Friars Minor.

 

So at the commencement of the Order he wished the friars to live in leper-houses to serve them, and by so doing to establish themselves in holy humility. For whenever anyone, whether noble or commoner, entered the Order, among the other instructions given him, he was told that he must humbly serve the lepers and live with them in their houses, as was laid down in the Rule: Seeking to posses nothing under heaven save holy poverty, in which they will be nourished by the Lord with food for body and soul in this world, and in the life to come will attain the heritage of heaven.

 

So he laid foundations both for himself and others on the deepest poverty and humility, for when he might have become a great prelate in the Church of God, he chose and willed to be humble, not onl　y in the Church but among his own friars as well. For in his opinion and desire, this lowliness was to be his highest dignity in the sight of God and men.
