환자를 위하여 겸손되이 육류를 구하다. 그리고 그들에게 겸손하고 참을성이 있어야 한다고 당부했다.

성 프란치스코는 도시와 같은 알려진 곳에서 병자를 위해 육류를 구하러 다니는 일을 부끄럽게 여기지 아니하였다. 그러나, 환자들에게 식량이 충분치 못할 때는 참을성 있게 견디며 불안해 하지 않도록 타일렀다.

그래서 그는 첫 회칙에 다음과 같이 기록해 두도록 했다:

“나는 병든 환자들에게 이르노니, 자기의 질병을 잘 견디어 낼 것이며 주님과 형제들에게 불평하지 않도록 할 것이며, 무작정 약을 복용하겠다고 하지 말것이며, 영혼의 적인 육체가 시들어 감을 회복하기 위해 지나친 욕망을 갖지 않도록 당부합니다. 그리고, 하느님께서 바라시는 그런 사람이 될 것이며 모든 일에 감사드리도록 합시다. 주께서 영원한 생명으로 이끌어 줄 사람들을 위하여 벌과 질병으로 시련을 주시고 계시는 것입니다. 주께서는 말씀해 주시고 계십니다: ‘내가 꾸짖고 징벌하는 대상은 내가 사랑하는 사람들이다.’라고 말입니다.

How he humbly obtained meat for the sick, and urged them to be humble and patient.

 

Blessed Francis was not ashamed to obtain meat for a sick friar in the public places of cities, but he warned those who were ill to endure want patiently, and not to create a disturbance when there was not sufficient food for their needs.

 

So In the first Rule he caused this to be written: I beg my sick friars not to grow impatient in their infirmities, nor to complain against the Lord or the brethren, nor to insist on having medicines, nor to have an undue desire to liberate this swiftly-perishing body, which is the enemy of the soul. But let them give thanks for all things, that they may desire to be men such as God wills them to be; for those whom the Lord has predestined to eternal life He trains with the spur of scourges and infirmities. As He Himself says; ‘It is those I love that I correct and chasten.’
