완덕의 거울

자기를 특별히 도와주는 동료를 원치 않았으며 자기 동료들을 멀리하다.
또 한번은 자기 동료들을 대리자에게 안내하고 나서 “내가 특수한 동료들과 함께 지내고 있다는 그 특전을 나 혼자만이 누리고 싶지 않습니다. 주께서 형제들을 움직이시어 여기저기로 나를 동행하게 해 주십시오.”라고 했다. 그리고 덧붙이기를 “최근에 길을 인도해 주는 작은 개 한 마리를 데리고 가는 눈 먼 사람을 보았습니다. 나는 그 사람보다 더 편하게 길을 떠나고 싶지 않습니다.”하고 말을 맺었다.
그리스도의 덕성이 자기 안에 머물 수 있도록 특전과 허식을 피하는 것이 언제나 그의 크나큰 기쁨이었기 때문이었다.

How he gave up his own companion, not desiring to have any particular companion.
On another occasion he gave up all his companions to his Vicar, saying, ‘I do not wish to appear alone in the privilege of having an especial companion of my own. Let the friars accompany me from place to place as the Lord shall move them.’ And he added, ‘Recently I saw a blind man who had onl y a little dog to guide him on his way, and I do not want to seem better than he.’
For it was always his glory to renounce every trace of privilege and ostentation so that the virtue of Christ might dwell in him.
