어느 불쌍한 형제를 비난한 형제에게 참회하도록 한일에 대하여,

성 프란치스코가 부리지오의 로까 가까이 있는 어느 형제의 집에 강론하러 갔을 때였다. 그가 강론하기로 되어 있는 날 공교롭게도 가난한 병자 한 사람이 그를 찾아왔다. 그는 그 병자가 불쌍한 생각이 들어 가지 동료에게 인간의 가난과 병에 대한 이야기를 했다. 그 때 그 동료는 “형제여, 이 사람이 몹시 가난하게 보이는 것은 사실입니다만 이 관구에 살고 있는 사람 어느 누구도 부자가 되고 싶어하지 않는 사람이 없다는 것도 사실일 것입니다.”하고 말했다. 이 말을 들은 성 프란치스코는 그 자리에서 그를 몹시 나무랐고 그 동료는 자기 잘못을 뉘우치게 되었다. 그때 사부께서 “내가 당신에게 참회할 것을 요구한다면 하겠습니까?”하자 “기꺼이 하겠습니다”하고 그가 대답했다. 이에 성 프란치스코가 말했다. “가서 당신의 수도복을 벗고 벌거숭이가 되어 그 가난한 사람의 발아래 엎드려 그를 악평하여 죄를 지었다고 말하고 그에게 당신을 위해 기도해달라고 간청하시오.” 그러자 그 형제는 가서 성 프란치스코가 말한 대로 하였다. 그리고는 일어나서 자기 수도복을 다시 입고 성 프란치스코에게 갔다. 사부께서 그를 향해 “당신은 그와 그리스도에게 어떻게해서 죄를 지었는지 알고 있습니까? 당신이 가난한 사람을 볼 때마다 그리스도의 이름으로 온다는 것을 기억하십시오. 그리고 그리스도께서는 우리의 가난과 나약함을 스스로 떠맡아 지셨음을 기억하십시오. 이 사람의 가난은 거울로써 우리를 비추고 있고, 우리는 그 거울에서 우리 주 그리스도의 나약하심과 가난하셨음을 마음 아프게 보며 묵상해야 합니다. 또한 그분은 우리의 구원을 위해 당신의 나약하심과 가난하심을 참고 견디셨습니다.”

On the penance that he imposed on a friar who had wrongfully criticized a certain poor man.

 

When blessed Francis had gone to preach at a house of the friars near Rocca Brizzi, it happened that on the day he was due to preach, a poor, sick man came to him. Full of compassion for him, he began to speak about the man’s poverty and sickness to his companion. And his companion said to him, ‘Brother, it is true that this man seems poor enough, but it may be that no one　 in the whole Province has a grater desire for riches.’ He was at onc　e severely rebuked by Blessed Francis, and confessed his fault. Then the Father said to him, ‘Are you ready to perform the penance that I give you?’ ‘I will do it willingly,’ he replied. And he said to him, ‘Go and remove your habit, and throw yourself naked at the poor man’s feet, and tell him how you have sinned in speaking ill of him, and ask him to pray for you.’ So the friar went and did all that blessed Francis had told him. Then he rose and resumed his habit, and returned to blessed Francis. And the Father said to him, ‘Do you want to know how you sinned against him, and against Christ Himself? Whenever you see a poor man, remember Christ in Whose Name he comes, and how He took upon Himself our poverty and weakness. For this man’s poverty serves us as a mirror, in which we should view and consider with pity the weakness and poverty of our Lord Jesus Christ, which He endured in His own body for our salvation.’
