한 가난한 사람에게 남몰래 천 한조각을 주고자 하다.

또 한번은 성 프란치스코가 머물고 있는 형제회에 한 가난한 사람이 와서 “하느님의 사랑으로”형제들에게 옷천 한 조각을 청했다. 거룩한 사부께서 이 말을 듣고 한 형제에게 “온 집안을 뒤져 보십시오, 천 조각이 있을지, 있거든 이 가간한 사람에게 주십시오”라고 했다. 그 형제가 온 집안을 샅샅이 뒤져 봤으나 아무것도 없다고 했다.

성 프란치스코는 그 가난한 사람이 빈손으로 돌아가지 않도록 남몰래 빠져 나와 -수도원장이 그렇게 못하도록 할까봐-칼을 집었가. 그리고는 외진 곳에 앉아 안을 댄 자기 수도복을 잘라 내어 그 가난한 사람에게 주려고 했다. 그러나, 수도원장이 그것을 알고는 주지 못하게 금지령을 내렸다. 더구나 그 때는 서리가 몹시 내렸고 그는 몹시 허약해 있어서 추위를 견디기가 어려운 상태였다. 그런데 거룩한 사부께서는 수도원장에게 “만일 제가 그 사람에게 이 조각을 주기를 바라시지 않는다면 대신에 다른 천조각이라도 주도록 해 주십시오.‘라고 했다. 성 프란치스코의 제의로 형제들은 자기들 옷에서 떼어 낸 천조각을 그 가난한 사람에게 주었다.

그가 순회 설교를 하며 여행할 때마다, 어떤 형제든지 그에게 망또를 빌려 주면, 자기가 만나는 가난한 사람이나 자기를 찾아 오는 가난한 사람에게 그 망토가 더 필요하다고 하는 양심의 소리가 들려 올 때는 그들에게 주어도 좋다는 언약을 하지 않으면 그것을 받지 아니했다. 그는 언제나 걸어 다녔으며, 병이 들며 나귀를 탔고 아주 급할 때만 말을 이용했다. 그러나 일반적으로 타고 다니지 않았으며 그가 죽기 얼마 전에 조금 타고 다녔을 뿐이었다.

How he wished to give some cloth to a poor man secretly.

 

One another occasion a poor man came to the friary where blessed Francis was staying, and begged a piece of cloth from the friars for the love of God. When he heard of this, the holy Father said to one　 of the friars, ‘Search through the house, and see if you can find any length or piece of cloth, and give it to this poor man.’ But having gone around the whole house, the friar told him that he could find nothing.

 

So in order that the poor man should not go away empty-handed, blessed Fraincis stole away quietly-lest the Guardian should forbid him-and took a knife. Then he sat down in a remote place and began to cut away part of his habit which was sewed on the inside, intending to give it to the poor man secretly. But the Guardian noticed him, and at onc　e forbade him to give it away, especially as there was a hard frost at the time, and he was very frail and cold. So the holy Father said to him, If you do not want me to give the man this piece, you must make sure that some other piece is given to our poor brother.’ And at the insistence of blessed Francis, the friars gave the poor man some cloth from their own garments.

 

Whenever he traveled about the world preaching, if any brother lent him a cloak, he would not accept it unless he was allowed to give it to any poor man whom he met or who came to him, if the voice of his own conscience told him that it was necessary to that person. He always went on foot, and onl　y rode a donkey after he became ill. onl　y in the most pressing need would he use a horse; normally he refused to ride at all, and onl　y did so a short while before his death.
