에지디오 형제가 수도회에 입회하기 전에 자기 망토를 가난한 사람에게 주었다고 하다.

수도회 초기에 단 두형제와 리보.또르또에 살고 있을 때였다. 에지디오란 형제가 세 번째 형제가 되어 그와 생활을 함께 하고자 세속에서 찾아왔다. 그가 세속의 복장을 한 채 거기에서 며칠을 머물고 있을 때 어느 가난한 사람이 성 프란치스코에게 애긍을 청하러 그곳에 왔다. 성 프란치스코는 에지디오를 보고 “이 가난한 형제에게 당신의 망또를 주시오”라고 했다. 에지디오는 즉시 기쁜 마음으로 망토를 그 가난한 사람에게 벗어 주었다. 그가 그 가난한 사람에게 즐거운 마음으로 자기 망토를 벗어주었기 때문에 하느님께서 새로운 은총을 그에게 나누어 주셨음을 그는 분명히 깨달았다. 그리하여 성 프란치스코는 그를 수도회에 입회하도록 해 주었으며 완덕에로 꾸준히 나아가게 하였다.

How he told Brother Giles, before he was received into the Order, to give his cloak to a poor man.

 

At the beginning of the Order, when he was living at Rivo Torto with onl　y two friars, a man named Giles, who became the third friar, came to him from the world in order to share his way of life. And when he had remained there for some easy, still wearing his secular clothes, a poor man came to the place asking alms of blessed Francis. Turning to Giles, blessed Francis said to him, ‘Give this poor brother your cloak,’ At onc　e Giles gladly removed it from his back and gave it to the poor man.

Then it became clear to him that God had imparted a new grace to his heart, since he had given his cloak to the poor man with great cheerfulness. So he was received into the Order by blessed Francis, and constantly advanced in virtue to the greatest perfection.
