완덕의 거울 <39>그는 수도회 책임자직을 사임하고 가타니

완덕의 거울     제3부 성 프란치스코와 그 형제들의 성스런 겸손과 순명의 완성에 대하여   <39> 그는 수도회 책임자직을 사임하고 가타니 베드로를 총 봉사자로 지명하다. 성 프란치스코는 성스런 겸손의 덕성을 보존하기 위하여 총회-그가 수도원을 설립한 이래로 수년마다 열리는 총회였다-가 열리고 있을 때 형제들 앞에서 장상직을 사임하면서 말하기를 “나는 여러분에게는 죽은 시체와 같습니다. 가타니 베드로를 보십시오. 여러분과 나는 그에게 순명할 것입니다.”라 했다. 그가 그의 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 순명과 존경을 약속할 때 모은 형제들은 울기 시작했다. 그토록 위대한 사부를 잃는다는 것을 알고 견딜 수 없는 슬픔이 복받쳐 올랐던 것이다. 그러나 거룩한 사부께서는 두 손을 마주잡고 하늘을 우러르며 일어나서 “주여, 지금까지 당신이 저에게 맡기신 가족을 당신께 맡겨 드리옵니다. 그지없으신 주여, 이제 저에ㅔ근 그럴 만한 힘이 없기 때문에 당신이 잘 알고 계시는 저의 허약함으로 해서 가족을 봉사자에게 맡기옵니다. 오 주여, 만일 어느 형제든지 그들이 나태하거나 또한 모범이 되지 못하거나 옳게 살지 못하고 죽게 되면 심판 날, 그들은 당신께 그 모든 것을 다 말씀 드릴 것입니다.”하고 기도드렸다. 그로부터 그는 죽을 때까지 심부름꾼으로서 다른 어느 누구보다도 여러 가지 면에서 더욱 겸손하게 처신하였다     Mirror of Perfection    ON THE PERFECTION OF HOLY HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE IN BLESSED FRANCIS AND HIS FRIARS   39   Firstly, how he resigned his office as head of the Order, and appointed Friar Peter Catanii as Minister General.   In order to preserve the virtue of holy humility, blessed Francis resigned the chief office before all the friars during a Chapter held a few years after his conversion, saying. ‘I am now as though dead to you. Look to Peter Catanii, whom you and I will all obey.’ And falling to his knees before him, he promised him obedience and reverence.   At this all the friars wept, and intolerable grief wrung deep groans from them when they saw themselves deprived of so great a Father in this way. But with eyes raised to heaven and hands clasped, the blessed Father rose and said, ‘Lord, I commend to Thee the family which hitherto Thou hast entrusted to me. Because of my infirmities which Thou knowest, sweetest Lord. I now entrust it to the Ministers, for I no longer have the strength to care for it. They shall render account to Thee in the Day of Judgement, O Lord, if any friar shall have perished through their negligence, bad example, or harsh correction.’   Thenceforward until his death he remained subject to them, behaving himself more humbly in all things than any others.
