망토를 더 필요로 하는 사람에게 주지 않는 것을 강도로 생각하다

한번은 그가 시에나에서 돌아오다가 길에서 어떤 불쌍한 사람을 만나게 되어 자기 동료를 보고 “우리는 가난한 사람에게 이 망토를 돌려주어야 합니다. 이것은 가난한 사람의 것입니다. 우리는 우리보다 더 가난한 사람을 만날 때까지 대여물로 우리가 다만 보관하고 있을 뿐입니다.”라 했다. 그러나, 그의 동료는 관대한 사부에게도 그것이 몹시 필요하다는 것을 알고 있었기 때문에, 다른 사람을 돕기 위해 자기자신에 대하여 너무 소홀히 해서는 안 된다고 완강히 거부했다. 그러나 그는 ‘나는 도적이 되고자 하지 않습니다. 우리보다 가난한 한 사람을 더 도와주지 않으려 한다면 우리는 절도의 죄를 짓게 되기 때문입니다.“라 했다. 그래서 친절한 사부는 그 가난한 사람에게 망토를 주어버렸다.

How he regarded it as robbery not to give a cloak to one　 who had greater need.

 

Once when he was returning from Siena, he met a poor man on the road, and said to his companion, ‘We ought to return this cloak to the poor man, whose it is; for we have accepted it as a loan until we should find someone poorer than ourselves.’ But knowing how badly the generous Father needed it, his companion protested strongly that he should not neglect himself to provide for someone else. But the Saint said to him, ‘I refuse to be a thief, for we should be guilty of theft if we refused to give it to one　 more poor than ourselves.’ So the kindly Father gave away the cloak to the poor man.
