한 가난한 노파에게 옷을 지어 입도록 자기의 옷을 벗어 주고 동료의 것도 벗어 주게 하다.

첼라노에서 어느 해 겨울을 지내고 있을 때였다. 성 프란치스코는 몸에 그대로 감고 있던 천으로 망토 모양의 옷을 만들어 입으려고 옷단을 접고 있었다. 그 천은 어떤 한 형제가 자기에게 빌려주었던 것이다. 그 때 마친 한 노파가 애긍을 청하러 왔기에 그는 자기 어깨에 걸쳐 입고 있던 옷천을 당장에 벗어 주었다. 그것이 자기의 것도 아니었지만 그 노파에게 내어 주면서 ‘가서 당신의 옷을 지어 입으십시오. 당신은 그것을 몹시 필요로 할테니까오.“하고 말했다.

그 노파는 좋아했으나 놀라기도 하였다. - 두려워서인지 기뻐서인지 알 수는 없었지만 - 그리고는 그것을 받았다. 그녀가 주저하면 그가 도로 가져갈까 겁이 났던지 급히 돌아가서 마름질하였다. 그러나, 자기 옷을 만들기에는 천이 좀 모자란다는 것을 알고, 사부가 이미 보여 준 호의를 믿고는 다시 찾아와서 천이 모자란다는 말을 했다.

성 프란치스코는 자기 동료 한 사람이 자기와 비슷한 것을 걸쳐 입고 있는 것을 보고는 ‘이 가난한 여인이 하는 말을 들었습니까“ 하느님의 사랑으로 추위를 견딥시다. 그리고 그녀의 옷을 지을 수 있도록 그 옷을 줍시다.”고 했다. 그 때 그의 동료는 성 프란치스코가 했듯이 즉시 내 주었다. 그래서 그들 두 사람은 가난한 한 여인의 옷 한 벌을 만들어 주기 위해서 망토 없이 지냈다.

How he stripped himself and his companion to provide clothing for a poor old woman.

 

At Celano, one　 winter, blessed Francis had a length of cloth folded to form a cloak, which a friend of the friars had lent him. When an old woman came to him asking alms, he immediately took the cloth from his shoulders, and although it did not belong to him, he gave it to the poor old woman, saying, ‘Go and make a garment for yourself, for you need it badly enough!’

 

The old woman laughed and was astonished-whether from fear or joy I cannot say-and took the cloth from his hands. Fearing that if she delayed he might take it back, she hurried away and cut up the cloth with shears. But when she discovered that the cloth was not sufficient for a garment, she put her trust in the kindness already shown by the holy Father, and told him that the cloth was not sufficient for a garment.

 

The Saint looked at his companion, who was wearing a similar piece of cloth on his shoulders, and said, ‘Do you hear what this poor woman says? Let us put up with the cold for the love of God, and give the cloth to this poor woman so that her garment can be completed.’ And at onc　e his companion gave her his own, just as blessed Francis had done. So both of them remained without a cloak in order that the poor woman might be clothed.
