 <26>

주께서 형제들은 작은 형제들이라 불리워져야 하고 평화와 구원을 선포해야 한다고 계시하시다.

어느날, 성 프란치스코가 다음과 같이 말하였다. ‘작은 형제회와 그 생활은 성자께서 근래에 당신의 성부께 청원하시며 말씀하신 작은 양떼인 것입니다. ’아버지, 당신이 만드시어 저에게 이 새로운 비천한 사람들을 맡겨 주셨사옵고, 그들은 겸손과 가난하기로는 자기들 보다 앞서간 다른 모든 사람들과는 같지 않을 것이며 저를 가지는 것으로 만족할 것이옵니다.‘하시고, 그 때 성부께서는 당신의 사랑하는 아들에게 ’내 아들아, 네가 청한 대로 이루어질지어다,‘라 하셨습니다.“

 

그래서 성 프란치스코는 언제나, 형제들은 성자께서 당신의 성부께 청하신 그대로 가난하고 겸손한 사람이 되어야 하기 때문에 하느님께서 작은 형제라 불리워져야 한다고 직접 말씀하셨음을 상기시켰다. 또 이러한 사실에 대하여 성자께서 직접 복음서에서 말씀하셨다. “내 어린 양들이여, 두려워 마라. 네 아버지께서 너희에게 당신의 왕국을 주시고자 하였느니라.” 또 “나를 믿어라. 너희가 여기 내 작은 형제들 중에서 가장 보잘 것 없는 한 사람에게 해 줄 때 나에게 해 주는 것이니라.”(마태 25,40) 그리고 주께서는 모든 가난하고 영적인 사람들에 대해서 말씀하고 있지만 그분은 당신의 교회에서 생긴 작은 형제회에 관해 특별히 언급하고 계셨다.

 

그러므로 작은 형제회로 불리워져야 한다고 하는 것은 주께서 성 프란치스코에게 계시하셨던 것이기 때문에 최초의 회칙에 기록해 넣도록 하였는데 이는 교황 인노첸시오 3세 이전에 이미 채택된 것을 이 분이 인준하여 재가하고 참사회에서 공적으로 선포하였던 것이다.

 

또한 주께서는 형제들이 사용해야 할 인사말도 그에게 계시하셨는데 그는 그것을 자기 유언서에 기록해 두도록 했다. ‘주께서 나에게 말씀하시기를 “주께서 여러분께 평화를!”한 인사를 해야 한다고 하셨습니다.“

 

형제회의 초기 때 성 프란치스코가 최초의 열 두 형제 중 한 사람을 데리고 여행을 하면서 길에서 혹은 들에서 일하고 있는 남자들에게나 여자들에게 “주께서 여러분에게 평화를!”하고 언제나 인사하였다. 그러나 그들은 어떤 수도자에게도 그런 인사를 들어보지 못했기 때문에 매우 당황하였으며 어떤 이들은 “당신의 이런 인사는 무슨 뜻입니까?”하고 묻기도 했다. 그 형제는 당황하여 성 프란치스코에게 “다른 인사말을 하도록 하여 주십시오.”라고 했다. 그러나, 거룩한 사부님은 “그들이 아무렇게나 말하도록 내버려두시오, 그들은 하느님 길을 알지 못하기 때문입니다. 이 때문에 부끄럽게 여기지 마십시오. 언젠가는 이 세상 모든 귀족들이며 왕자들이 이 인사로 해서 다른 형제들을 존경할 것입니다. 주께서 새로운 작은 양떼들을 가지고 싶어하시는 데 이들은 틀림없이 그들의 말과 생활 방식이 자기들의 선배들과는 다르며 또한 가장 거룩하시고 가장 큰 영광이신 그분만을 모시는 일을 만족하게 생각하는 것은 아무런 놀랄 일이 아니기 때문입니다.”라 했다.

How the Lord revealed to him that the friars were to be called Minors, and were to proclaim peace and salvation.

 

One day blessed Francis said, ‘The Order and life of the Friars Minor is a little flock which the Son of God has asked of His heavenly Father in these latter days, saying, “Father, I would that Thou shouldest from and give Me a new and humble people in these latter days, who will be unlike all others who have preceded them in humility and poverty, and content to possess Me alone.” And the Father said to His beloved Son, “My Son, it is done as Thou hast asked.”’

 

So blessed Francis used to say that God willed and revealed to him that they should be called Friars Minor, because they were to be the poor and humble people whom the Son of God Himself speaks in the Gospel: Do not be afraid, My little flock. Your Father has determined to give you His kingdom. And again: Believe Me, when you did to one　 of the least of My brethren here, you did it to Me. And although the Lord was speaking of all poor and spiritual people, He was referring more particularly to the Order of Friars Minor which was to arise in His Church.

 

Therefore, since it was revealed to blessed Francis that it should be called the Order of Friars Minor, he caused it to be written in his first Rule, which he took before the Lord Pope Innocent III; who approved and granted it, and later proclaimed it publicly in Consistory.

 

The Lord also revealed to him the greeting which the friars were to use, and he caused this to be written in his Testament, saying: The Lord revealed to me that I should say as a greeting, ‘The Lord give you peace.’

In the early days of the Order, while he was traveling with a friar who was one　 of the first twelve, he used to greet men and women along the road and in the fields, saying, ‘The Lord give you peace.’ And because people had never heard such a greeting from any Religious, they were very startled. Indeed, some said indignantly, ‘What do you mean by this greeting of yours?’ As a result the friar became embarrassed, and said to blessed Francis, ‘Allow me to use some other greeting.’ But the holy Father said, ‘Let them chatter, for they do not understand the ways of God. Don’t feel ashamed because of this, for one　 day the nobles and princes of this world will respect you and the other friars for this greeting. For it is no marvel if the Lord should desire to have a new little flock, whose speech and way of life are unlike those of all its predecessors, and which is content to possess Him alone, the Most High and most glorious.’
