추기경 식탁으로 가기 직전에도 애긍을 청하려 다니다.

성 프란치스코가 훗날 교황 그레고리 9세가 된 오스띠아 주교를 방문하여 머물고 있을 때였다. 정찬 때가 되자 몰래 빠져 나와 애긍을 청하러 갔다. 그가 돌아와 보니 주교와 많은 기사들과 귀족들은 이미 식당에 가고 없었다. 거룩하신 사부도 거기로 가서 자기가 모아 온 애긍을 추기경 앞에 놓인 식탁 위에 올려놓고 그의 옆자리에 앉았다. 그가 언제나 자기 옆자리에 성 프란치스코를 앉히고 싶어 했기 때문이었다. 추기경이 이것을 보고 당황해 하였으나 손님들 때문에 그때는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.

 

성 프란치스코는 약간의 식사를 하고 나서 자기가 구해 온 애긍을 주 하느님 이름으로 기사들과 교구사제들에게 각각 나누어주었다. 그들 모두가(후스)(외투에 달린 모자)와 소매자락을 내어 밀면서 존경과 경애심으로 받았다. 어떤 사람은 애긍으로 얻어 온 음식도 먹었지만 한편으로 어떤 사람은 그에 대한 경애심이 없어졌다.

 

식사가 끝나자 추기경은 성 프란치스코를 자기 숙소로 데리고 갔다. 그리고는 즐겁고 기쁨에 넘쳐 팔을 벌려 그를 껴안고 “소박한 나의 형제여, 형제들의 집인 이 집을 찾아 와서도 애긍을 청하러 밖에 나가다니. 오늘 왜 나를 부끄럽게 만들었습니다.”“라 하자 성 프란치스코는 ”교구장님, 그와는 반대입니다.“하며 ”저는 최대의 경의를 표했습니다. 종이 자기 소임을 다하고 자기 교구장님께 순명을 다하는 것이 자기 교구장님께 경의를 표하는 것이기 때문입니다.“라 했다. 그는 또 ”우리 가난한 형제들에게 모범을 보이고 또 본보기가 된다는 것은 나의 의무입니다. 이 형제회에는 명실 상부한 작은 형제들이 있으며 앞으로도 계속 나올 것임을 나는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그들은 주 하느님의 사랑을 위하고 모든 일에 자기들을 이끌어 주시는 성령을 거룩하게 함으로써 겸손하고 순명하게 될 형제들이요. 그 형제회의 종인 것입니다. 또한 그들 가운데에는 수치와 악습에 젖어 있는 사람들도 있고, 자신을 낮추는 일을 거부하고 애긍을 청하러 나가는 일과 천한 일을 하는 것을 창피하게 여기는 사람들도 있으며 앞으로도 있을 것입니다. 이 때문에 나는 내자신의 행동으로써 회에 속해 있고 앞으로 소속할 사람들에게 자기들의 현재 생활과 다가 올 미래의 생활이 하느님에게 용서 받을 수 없음을 가르쳐야 합니다. 그러므로 우리의 주교님이시며 사도의 후원자이신 주교님과 하느님 사랑으로 주교님 댁으로 나를 맞아 주셨을 뿐만 아니라 주교님 식탁에서 식사하도록 하여 주신 훌륭하고 부유한 사람들과 함께 지내는 동안 나는 애긍을 청하러 가는 일이 부끄럽지 않는 것입니다. 정말 나는 이런 일을 숭고한 고결함이요. 훌륭한 기품으로 생각하고 보존하고자 하며, 주님은 만군의 주님이시며 모든 이의 종이 되고자 하신 그 분을 기리기 위해서 그렇게 하고자 합니다. 주님께서는 당신의 위엄으로 귀하시고 거룩하게 되셨는데도 가난한 자로 이 세상에 오셔서 우리가 겸손치 못함을 나무라셨습니다. 그래서 내가 현재의 형제들이나 미래의 형제들이 형제회의 가난한 작은 식탁에 둘러앉아 자기들이 집집마다 하느님 사랑으로 구걸 해 온 빈약한 애긍을 내 앞에서 펼쳐 본다는 것이 주교님의 진수 성찬으로 차려 놓은 식탁이나 다른 주교님들의 그러한 식탁에 앉는 것보다는 영육간에 훨씬 더 위안이 된다고 생각하고 있음을 알아 주셨으면 합니다. 자비의 빵이란 하느님의 찬미와 사랑으로 성화된 빵이기 때문입니다. 형제들이 애긍을 청하러 나가면 반드시 ‘주 하느님의 찬미와 축복을 받으소서.’하고 먼저 말해야 합니다. 또 그 다음에는 ‘주 하느님의 사랑으로 애긍을 하십시오.’라고 해야 합니다.“라고 말했다.

 

추기경은 거룩한 사부님의 말씀에 감화되어 “내 아들이여, 당신이 좋은 대로 하시오. 하느님께서 당신과 함께 계시고 당신은 그 분과 함께 있으니까요.”라 했다. 성 프란치스코가 자주 말한대로 애긍의 완덕 때문에, 또 애긍을 청하러 나가는 것을 부끄러워하지 않도록 어떤 형제든지 집에 오랫동안 남아 있지 않아야 한다는 것이 그의 소망이었다. 형제가 이 세상에서 더할 수 없이 귀하고 더 할 수 없이 훌륭하면 할수록 애긍을 청하러 나가거나 다른 형제들에게는 익숙해져 있는 천한 일을 할 때 더욱 기쁨에 차고 더욱 성화가 되는 것이다.

How he went out for alms before he would go in to the Cardinal’s table

 

Once when blessed Francis was visiting the Lord Bishop of Ostia, who later became Pope Gregory(IX), he went out unobserved at dinner-time in order to ask alms from door to door. And when he returned, the Lord of Ostia had already gone in to table with many knights and nobles. But when the holy Father entered, he laid the alms that he had collected on the table before the Cardinal, and sat down beside him, for the Cardinal always wished that blessed Francis should sit next him at table. The Cardinal was somewhat embarrassed to find that blessed Francis had gone out for alms and laid them on the table; but he said nothing at the time because of his guests.

 

When blessed Francis had eaten a little, he took up his alms and in the name of the Lord God distributed a little to each of the knights and chaplains of the Lord Cardinal. And they all accepted them with great reverence and devotion, reaching out their hoods and sleeves; and some ate the alms, while others kept them out of devotion to him.

 

After dinner the Cardinal entered his own apartment, taking blessed Francis with him. And stretching out his arms, he embraced him with great joy and gladness, saying, ‘My simple brother, why have you shamed me to-day by going out for alms when you visit my house, which is a home for your friars?’ ‘On the contrary, my lord,’ replied blessed Francis, ‘I have shown you the greatest honour; for when a servant does his duty and fulfils his obedience to his lord, he does honour to his lord.’ And he said, ‘It is my duty to be the pattern and example of our poor friars, especially as I know that in this Order of friars there are, and will be, friars who are Minors in name and in deed, who, for love of the Lord God and by the anointing of the Holy Spirit Who will guide them in all things, will be humble and obedient, and the servants of their brethren. There are also, and will be, some among them who are held back by shame or bad custom, and who scorn to humble themselves and stoop to going for alms and doing other servile work. Because of this I must by my own actions teach those who belong, and will belong, to the Order, that they are inexcusable in the eyes of God both in this life and in the life to come. So while I am with you, who are our Lord and Apostolic Protector, or with other great and wealthy men of this world who for love of God not onl　y receive me into your houses but even press me to eat at your table, I will not be ashamed to go out for alms. Indeed, I intend to regard and retain this practice as the highest nobility and royal dignity, and to do it in honour of Him Who, though He was Lord of all, willed for our sakes to become the servant of all. And when He was rich and glorious in His majesty, He came as one　 poor and despised in our humility. So I want all present or future friars to know that I regard it as a greater consolation of soul and body to sit at the poor little table of the brethren, and to see in front of me the meager alms that they beg from door to door for love of the Lord God, than to sit at your table and that of other lords, abundantly provide with different dishes. For the bread of charity is holy bread, hallowed by the praise and love of God, and when a friar goes out for alms he should first say, “Praised and blessed be the Lord God!” And afterwards he should say, “Give us alms for love of the Lord God.”’

 

The Cardinal was much edified by the holy Father’s words, and said, “My son, do whatever seems good to you, for God is with you, and you with Him.’ For, as blessed Francis often said, it was his wish that no friar should remain long without going out to beg alms, both because of its great merit, and lest he should become ashamed to go. Indeed, the nobler and greater a friar had been in the world, the more pleased and edified he was when he went for alms and did other humble work as the friars were then accustomed to do.
