크리스마스 날, 봉사자가 참석하고 있어서 풍요로운 음식을 차렸는데 이것을 보고 말고 행동으로써 타이르다.

한 형제들의 봉사자가 리에띠 형제회로 성 프란치스코를 찾아와서 크리스마스 잔치를 열고자 하였는데 형제들은 봉사자를 축하하기 위해 정성을 다하여 새하얀 아마포를 깔고 유리그릇을 차려 식탁을 마련하였다. 사부께서 음식을 먹기 위해 초막에서 내려 와 보니 식탁이 땅바닥보다 높게 차려져 있고 몹시 신경을 써서 차려져 있으므로 몰래 돌아 나와 그 날 와 있던 불쌍한 거지의 모자와 지팡이를 가지고 갔다. 그리고는 자기 동료 한 사람을 가만히 불러 집안에 있는 형제들 몰래 형제회의 문을 빠져 나왔으나 그 동료는 대문 안쪽에 있게 했다. 그 동안에 형제들은 저녁 식사를 하기 위해 모였다. 성 프란치스코가 즉시 오지 않을 때에는 형제들이 자기를 기다리지 않도록 하였기 때문이다.

 

그가 잠시동안 밖에 있다가 문을 두드리자 그 동료가 즉시 문을 열어 주었다. 그는 그 모자를 쓰고 망태기를 메고 손에는 그 막대기를 집고 나그네나 거지 형상을 하고 형제들이 식사하고 있는 방문으로 와서 ‘하느님 사랑으로 이 불쌍하고 병든 나그네에게 애긍 해 주십시요,“하고 소리쳤다. 그러나 봉사자와 다른 형제들은 그를 즉시 알아보았다. 그래서 봉사자가 대답했다. ”형제여, 우리도 가난합니다. 또 우리는 식구가 많기 때문에 우리가 가지고 있는 애긍이라면 고작 우리가 필요로 하는 그 정도밖에는 안 됩니다. 그렇지만 당신이 간청하는 하느님 사랑을 위해 들어오시오, 주님께서 우리에게 주신 애긍을 당신에게 나누어 드리겠습니다.“

 

그가 들어가서 형제들의 식탁 앞에 섰을 때 봉사자는 그에게 자기가 먹던 음식 접시와 약간의 빵을 내 주었다. 그는 그것을 받아들고, 식탁에 앉아 있는 형제들이 다 볼 수 있는 난로 옆 땅바닥에 겸손하게 앉았다. 그리고는 한숨을 쉬면서 말했다. “정성껏 마련한 식탁을 보니 매일같이 이 집, 저 집으로 애긍을 청하러 다니는 가난한 수도자의 식탁같은 느낌이 들지 않는군요. 친애하는 형제여, 그리스도의 겸손과 가난의 길을 따르는데 다른 수도자들보다 우리는 더 큰 책임을 지고 있습니다. 우리가 불리움을 받았고 하느님과 사람들 앞에서 신앙을 고백한 것은 이러한 목적 때문이니까요. 그러므로, 우리 주님과 성인들의 잔치는 사람을 천국과 멀어지게 하는 사치와 과식에서 얻기보다는 이 성인들이 천국을 얻게 된 궁핍과 가난에서 더 영광을 얻기 때문에 나는 작은 형제처럼 앉아 있는 것 같군요.”

 

형제들은 이 말에 부끄러워하며 정말 진리의 말을 하고 있음을 깨달았다. 그들 중 몇몇은 그가 바닥에 앉아 그토록 거룩하고 간단한 방법으로 자기들을 바로 고쳐 주고 있음에 소리내어 울기 시작하였다. 그는 평신자들에게 감화를 주기 위해서라도 형제들은 검소하고 조촐한 식탁을 차리도록 했다. 만일 가난한 사람이 방문을 하거나 형제들이 그들을 초대했을 때 그 가난한 사람은 바닥에 앉고 형제들은 높은 데에 앉을 것이 아니라 똑같이 그들과 함께 앉아야 할 것이라고 가르치기도 했다.

How by word and example he reproved friars who had prepared a lavish meal on Christmas Day because a Minister was present.

 

When one　 of the Friar-Ministers had visited blessed Francis in order to keep the Feast of Christmas with him in the friary at Rieti, the friars prepared the tables rather elaborately and carefully on Christmas Day in honour of the Minister, putting on fair white linen and glass vessels. But when the Father came down from his cell to eat, and saw the tables raised up from the ground and prepared with such greatcare, he went back secretly and too the hat and staff of poor beggar who had arrived that day. And calling in a low voice to one　 of his companions, he went out of the door of the friary unseen by the brethren in the house, while his companion remained inside near the door. Meanwhile the friars came in to dine, for blessed Francis had ordered that, whenever he did not come at onc　e at mealtime, the friars were not to wait for him.

 

When he had stood outside for a while, he knocked on the door, and his companion immediately opened to him. And entering with his hat on his back and his staff in his hand, he came like a stranger or beggar to the door of the room where the friars were eating, and called our, ‘For the love of God, give alms to this poor sick stranger!’ But the Minister and the other friars recognized him at onc　e. And the Minister replied, ‘Brother, we are poor as well, and because we are so many, the alms that we have onl　y meet our needs. But for the love of God which you have invoked, come in and we will share with you the alms which the Lord has given us.’

 

When he had entered and stood before the friars’ table, the Minister handed to him the plate from which he was eating, and also some bread. And taking it, he humbly sat down on the floor beside the fire in the sight of the friars sitting at table. Then he sighed and said to the brethren, ‘When I saw the table elaborately and carefully laid, I felt that this was not the table of poor religious who go around for alms from door to door each day. Dearest brothers, we are under a greater obligation than other Religious to follow the example of Christ’s humility and poverty, for it is to this end that we have been called and professed before God and men. So it seems to me that I am sitting like a Friar Minor, because the feasts of our Lord and the Saints are better honoured in the want and poverty by which these Saints won heaven than in the luxury and excess by which a soul is estranged from heaven.’

 

The friars were ashamed at his words, realizing that he was speaking no more than the truth. And seeing him seated on the ground, wishing to correct and teach them in such a holy and simple way, some of them began to weep aloud. For he warned the brethren to eat humbly and simply, so as to edify lay folk. And if any poor man should visit them or be invited by the friars, he was to sit with them as an equal, and not the poor man on the floor and the friars on high.
