군인들이 성 프란치스코의 권유로 이 집, 저 집에서 얻은 애긍을 자기들의 필수품으로 하다

성 프란치스코가 노제라시와 인접한 바냐라에 있는 형제회에서 묵고 있을 때 수종증 때문에 발이 부어 몹시 앓고 있었다. 아시시 사람들이 이 소식을 듣고 그가 거기에 그대로 머물게 되면 다른 사람들이 그 거룩한 분을 모셔 가면 어떻게 하나 싶어 형제회로 서둘러 가서 그를 아시시로 모셔 오도록 군인들을 보냈다. 그들이 돌아오는 도중 아시시 직할 마을인 어느 아늑한 마을에 들렀을 때 그를 몹시 반갑게 맞이하는 어느 가난한 집에서 머물게 되었다. 그동안 군인들은 자기들이 먹을 것을 구하기 위해 마을로 내려갔지만 아무것도 없었다. 그래서 그들이 사부께 돌아와 농담조로 “형제여, 우리들에게 애긍을 나누어 주셔야겠습니다. 먹을 것을 살 수 없기 때문입니다.”했다. 그러자 성 프란치스코가 열정어린 말로 대답했다. “당신들은 당신들의 돈은 믿고 하느님은 믿지 않기 때문에 아무것도 구하지 못하였소, 당신들이 음식을 사겠다고 들렀던 집에 다시 가시오. 부끄러움을 무릅쓰고 주 하느님의 이름으로 애긍을 청하시오. 성령께서 그들을 움직이시어 풍부히 주도록 하실 것입니다.” 그래서 그들은 성 프란치스코가 말한 대로 거기에 가서 애긍을 청하였다. 그리고, 그들에게 애긍을 요청받은 사람들은 기쁜 마음으로 자기들이 가지고 있는 것들을 후하게 내주었다. 그들은 기적이 일어난 줄 알고 기쁜 마음으로 하느님을 찬미하면서 성 프란치스코에게 돌아왔다.

 

사부께서는 주 하느님의 사랑으로 애긍을 청하는 것을 하느님과 사람들 앞에 고귀하고 품위 있는 행위로 생각하였다. 왜냐하면 성부께서는 인간이 죄인임에도 인간이 이용하도록 만물을 창조해 주시어 당신이 사랑하시는 성자의 사랑을 통하여 훌륭한 이들에게도, 그렇지 못한 이들에게도 너그러이 내려 주셨기 때문이다. 마음이 관대하고 동정심이 많은 어떤 사람이 “누구든지 나에게 1 페니를 준다면 나는 그에게 금화 천 닢을 주겠다.”고 하는 그 사람보다 하느님의 종은 더 즐겁고 더 기쁘게 하느님 사랑으로 애긍을 청해야 한다고 그는 항상 그런 말을 했다. 왜냐하면 애긍을 청함으로써 하느님의 종이 애긍을 요청 받은 사람들에게 하느님의 사랑을 표현해 주는 것이 되기 때문이다.

 

그래서 형제들의 수가 늘기 전에나 는 후에나 어떤 형제든지 하느님 말씀을 전하여 세상을 두루 돌아다니다 어느 귀족이나 부자로부터 숙식을 함께 하자고 초대받을 때에는 형제들의 좋은 모범과 가난한 사람의 기쁨을 보여주기 위해서 그 집에 들어가기까지 끼니때마다 애긍을 처하러 다니곤 했다. 성 프란치스코는 "나는 내가 지니게 된 이 좋은 품위와 유산, 그리고 나의 직업과 내 형제들의 직업 - 즉, 문전 걸식하는 일 - 을 버리지 않을 것입니다.“라고 했다. 그리고 때때로 그 집주인은 그와 함께 성 프란치스코가 청해 놓은 애긍을 같이 날라 오기도 했으며 그에 대한 강한 애착심에서 우러나오는 기쁨과 같은 것을 보존하고자 하였다. 필자는 이러한 일을 여러번 보았기 때문에 증언하는 것이다.

How, at blessed Francis’s advice, the soldiers obtained their needs by asking alms from door to door.

 

When blessed Francis was in the friary at Bagni near the city of Nocera, his feet began to swell badly because of the disease of dropsy, and he became seriously ill. When the people of Assisi heard of this, they hurriedly sent soldiers to the friary to escort him to Assisi, fearing that if he remained there, others would obtain his most holy body. But while they were bringing him, they stopped in a fortress-town belonging to the Commune of Assisi in order to eat; and blessed Francis rested in the house of a poor man who welcomed him willingly and gladly. Meanwhile the soldiers went through the town to buy themselves what they needed, and found nothing. So they came back to the holy Father and told him jokingly, ‘Brother, you will have to let us share your alms, for we cannot by anything to eat!’ Then blessed Francis said to them with great fervour, ‘You have not found anything because you trusted in your flies(meaning, your money), and not in God. Go back to the houses where you went trying to buy food; put aside your shame, and ask them to give generously.’ So they went away and asked alms as blessed Francis had told them; and those from whom they asked alms gave them whatever they had with great gladness and generosity. And recognizing that a miracle had happened to them, they returned to blessed Francis praising God with great joy.

 

The holy Father used to regard it as an act of great nobility and dignity before God and the world to ask alms for love of the Lord God, for all things which our heavenly Father has created for the use of men are grated freely despite their sin both to the worthy and to the unworthy through the love of His beloved Son. He used to say that the servant of God ought to ask alms for the love of God more willingly and gladly than one　 who, out of his own generosity and sympathy, might go and say, ‘If anyone will give me a penny, I will give him a thousand pieces of gold.’ For, by asking alms, the servant of God offers the love of God to those of whom he begs, and in comparison with this all things in heaven and earth are nothing.

 

So before the friars increased in numbers, and even after they became numerous, whenever a friar went through the world preaching, and was invited by anyone, however noble or wealthy, to eat and lodge with him, he would always go for alms at mealtime before he came to his host’s house, in order to uphold the good example of the friars and the dignity of Lady Poverty. Blessed Francis often used to say to his host, ‘I will not resign my royal dignity and heritage, and my profession and that of my brethren (that is, to beg bread from door to door).’ And sometimes his host would go with him and carry the alms which blessed Francis had collected, and preserve them like relics out of devotion to him.

 

The writer has seen this happen many times, and testifies to these things.
