형제들이 내일을 대비하고 염려하는 것을 바라지 않다

성 프란치스코가 최초의 형제들과 함께 지내는 동안은 아주 가난하게 살았는데 이는 주께서 그와 그의 형제들이 거룩한 복음 말씀을 따라 살아가도록 그에게 일러주신 바로 그 날부터 모든 일에 있어서나 모든 일을 통해서나 문자 그대로 복음 말씀을 실천하였던 것이다. 그는 형제들을 위해 요리하는 형제가 평소대로 마른 콩을 미리 따스한 물에 넣었다. 그러나, 그는 그 콩을 이튿날 형제들에게 나누어주기 위해 그렇게 하지 못하게 하였다. 이는 “내일을 걱정하지 말라.”하는 거룩한 복음 말씀을 실천하기 위해서였다. 그리하여 형제들이 그 콩을 먹는 날 아침 기도가 끝날 때까지 콩이 연해지도록 따스한 물에 넣는 일을 늦추었던 것이다. 특히 도시에서 많은 형제들이 이 관례를 오랫동안 따랐다. 그리고 형제들이 살아가는데 필요한 그 이상의 애긍을 청하지도 받지도 않았다.

How he did not wish the friars to be provident and anxious for to-morrow

 

While blessed Francis was with the first friars, he lived with them in such poverty that they observed the holy Gospel to the letter in all things and through all things, from the very day when our Lord revealed to him that he and his friars were to live according to the pattern of the holy Gospel. He therefore forbade the friar who cooked for the brethren to put dried beans into warm water in the evening, as is usual, when he intended to give them to the friars to eat on the following day. This was in order to observe the saying of the holy Gospel, Do not fret over to-morrow. So the friar delayed putting them to soften until after Matins on the day when they were to be eaten. Many friars, especially in towns, continued to observe this custom for a long time, and would not seek or accept more alms than were necessary to support them for a single day.
