다른 형제들이 몹시 갖고 깊어하는 것으로 자기 몸을 편안하게 하지는 않다.

성 프란치스코가 리에띠 가까이에 있는 성 엘제우데리오의 은둔처에 머물고 있을 때 심한 추위 때문에 자기 수도복과 동료들의 수도복에 천조각을 대고 기워 입었다. - 자기 신념대로 그에겐 수도복이 한 벌밖에 없었다. - 그 결과 그의 몸은 좀 따스하게 되었다. 잠시 후 그는 기도하고 돌아와서 자기 동료에게 기쁨에 넘친 채 말했다. “모든 형제들에게 모범을 보이고 본보기가 되는 것이 나의 직분입니다. 그래서 수도복에 안을 대고 하는 것이 내 몸에 필요한 일이지만 같은 것을 서로서로 필요로 하는 형제들과 그것을 가지지 못하고 가질 수도 없는 형제들을 고려해 봐야 합니다. 나는 그러므로 이 문제에 대해서 그들의 마음을 위로해 주어야 하고 그리고 내가 그렇게 하는 것을 그들이 보게 되면 꾸준히 궁핍을 극복하는 힘을 갖게 되며, 그렇게 되도록 나는 그들과 꼭 같은 궁핍을 견디어야 합니다.”

 

그러나 그와 함께 있는 우리는 그가 형제들에게 모범이 되어 그들이 가난을 참을성 있게 견디는 일을 도와주기 위해 자기 몸에 필요로 하는 얼마나 많은 필수품을 거부했는지 말로나 글로는 표현할 수 없다. 형제가 늘어나기 시작했을 때 그들에게 말보다는 행동으로 무엇을 행하고 무엇을 행하지 않아야 하는 지를 가르치는 것이 자기의 중요하고 특수한 관심사로 삼았다.

How he refused to comfort his own body with things that he thought other friars might lack.

 

While blessed Francis was staying in the hermitage of Saint Eleutherius near Rieti, he lined his own habit and those of his companions with some pieces of cloth because of the intense cold-for, as was his custom, he had onl　y one　 habit-and as a result his body began to derive a little comfort. A short while afterwards, when he returned from prayer, he said with great joy to his companion, ‘It is my duty to be the pattern and example to all the brethren; so although it is necessary for my body to have a lined habit, I must consider my other brethren who have the same needs, and who perhaps do not and cannot possess it. I must therefore have sympathy with them in this matter, and endure the same privations as they, so that when they see me doing so, they may have the strength to bear theirs patiently.’

 

But we who were with him cannot express either in words or writing how many great necessities he denied his body in order to give a good example to the friars, and help them to bear their poverty patiently. For onc　e the friars began to increase in numbers, he made it his chief and particular concern to teach the brethren what they should do or avoid by his own actions rather than by words.
