성 프란치스코는 돈을 멀리하다. 그리고 돈에 손댄 형제를 벌 주다

그리스도의 참 친구요 모방자인 성 프란치스코는 세속적인 것은 아주 경멸하였다. 더구나 돈을 아주 싫어하였다. 형제들이 악을 피하고자 하듯이 그는 언제나 말과 수범으로 그들에게 돈을 피하도록 권유하였다. 변에 대한 애착과 유용성을 갖지 않듯이 돈에 대한 애착과 필요성을 갖지 않도록 형제들에게 일렀다.

 

어느날 평신자 한 사람이 기도하려고 뽀르치운꿀라의 성 마리아 성당에 들어가게 되었는데 봉헌금으로 얼마의 돈을 십자가 가까이에다 놓아두었다. 그가 그 자리를 떠난 뒤 형제 한 사람이 무심코 그것을 집어 창문턱에 올려놓았다. 그러나 이 사실이 성 프란치스코에게 알려지자 이 형제는 자기가 장본인임이 드러날 것을 알고 즉시 용서를 구하러 서둘러 가서 땅에 엎드려 자기에게 벌을 내려 달라고 하였다.

 

거룩한 사부님은 이를 꾸짖어 그에게 중노동을 시켰다. 그리고는 창문턱의 돈을 입으로 집어들고 형제회 밖으로 갖고 나가 거름더미에다 버리도록 했다.

 

이 형제가 명령대로 하고 난 뒤 이 사실을 보고들은 이들은 크게 불안 해 하였으며 그 후로는 돈을 거름처럼 멀리하였다.

Saint Francis’s hatred of money, and how he punished a friar who touched money.

 

Francis, the true friend and imitator of Christ, utterly despised all things belonging to this world, and hated money above all else. He always urged his brethren both by word and example to avoid it as they would the devil. And he told the friars to have as little love and use for money as for dung.

 

One day, a layman happened to enter Saint Mary of the Porziuncula to pray, and laid some money near the cross as an offering. When he had left, one　 of the friars unthinkingly picked it up and placed it on e window ledge. But when this was reported to blessed Francis, this friar, realizing himself detected, at onc　e hastened to ask forgiveness; and, falling to the ground, offered himself for punishment.

 

The holy Father reproved him, and took him severely to task for touching the money; and he ordered him to take the money from the window in his mouth, carry it outside the friary, and lay it on a heap of ass’s dung.

 

When this friar readily obeyed this order, all who saw or heard were filled with the greatest fear, and thenceforward despised money as ass’s dung. And further examples moved them to despise it altogether.
