최초로 입회한 형제들이 애긍 청하는 일을 부끄러워 할 때 애긍을 청해오도록 격려하고 가르치다.

성 프란치스코가 최초의 형제들을 맞아들이기 시작할 때 그들이 이곳을 찾아오는 것을 보고 하느님께서 자기에게 훌륭한 친구를 주셔서 즐거움에 충만해 있었다. 그는 그들을 사랑하고 아꼈으므로 애긍을 청하러 나가는 일에 창피스러워 하는 것을 알고 그들에게 애긍 청하는 일을 시키지 않으려고 그는 늘 혼자 나갔다. 그러나 그는 세상에서 위로해 주는데 익숙해 왔고 또한 본래 마음이 약했고 지나친 단식과 고난 때문에 훨씬 쇠약해져 있었다. 전력을 다하였기 때문에 몹시 쇠잔해 있을 때 그는 혼자 힘으로는 이 일을 계속할 수 없음을 깨닫게 되었다. 그는 또한 자기 형제들이 그 일에 창피스러워 하더라도 같은 생활을 하도록 부름을 받았음을 알고 있었다. 하지만 그들은 이런 일을 충분히 깨닫지 못하고 있었으며, ‘우리도 애긍을 청하러 가겠습니다.“고 말할 만큼 분별력도 없었다.

 

그래서 그는 그들을 보고 말했다. “나의 사랑하는 형제여, 작은아이들이여, 애긍을 청하러 나가는 일을 창피스러워 하지 마십시오. 우리 주님께서는 우리를 구하기 위하여 이 세상에서 몸소 가난하게 지내셨으며 우리도 가난의 길을 걸으며 그분의 행적을 따르기로 하였습니다. 이것이 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 차지하셨다가 우리에게 불러 주셨고 또 가장 거룩한 가난 속에서 당신처럼 살고 싶어하는 모든 이에게 불러주신 유산입니다. 이 시대에 가장 고귀하고 가장 현명한 수많은 사람들이 우리 회에 입회하였으며 구걸하러 나가는 일을 굉장한 명예로 생각할 것이라고 여러분에게 분명히 단언합니다. 그러니 하느님의 축복을 받으며 자신 있게 또한 기쁜 마음으로 애긍을 청하러 나가십시오. 여러분이 ‘주 하느님의 사랑을 위해 애긍하십시오.’라고 말할 때 여러분의 애긍을 요청 받은 사람들에게 하느님의 사랑을 주는 것이기 때문에 환전해서 돈 백 닢을 가져  오는 사람보다 애긍 청하러 가는 것이 더 기쁘고 복된 일이 되어야 합니다. 왜냐하면 주님을 따르는 일에 비하면 세상의 재물은 아무 것도 아니기 때문입니다.”

 

그러나 그때까지만 해도 형제들의 수가 몇몇 되지 않았으므로 둘씩 짝지어 보낼 수가 없었다. 그래서 그들을 혼자서 도시나 마을로 내 보냈다. 그들이 청한 애긍을 얻어 돌아와서 각기 성 프란치스코에게 보였다. 어떤 사람은 다른 사람보고 ‘내가 당신보다 더 많은 애긍을 얻어 왔어요.“라고 했다. 성 프란치스코는 그들이 즐거워하는 것을 보고 기뻐하였다. 나중에는 그들이 구걸하러 나가겠다고 허락을 요청해 왔다.

How, when the first friars were ashamed, he encouraged and taught them to go out and seek alms.

 

When blessed Francis began to have friars he was full of joy at their conversion, and that God had given him a goodly company. And he had such love and respect for them that he did not insist that they went out for alms, because it was clear to him that they were ashamed to go. So, in order to spare them the shame, he used to go out every day to collect alms alone. But he had been accustomed to comfort in the would, was frail by nature, and was further weakened by overmuch fasting and hardship. And when he became exhausted by his efforts, he realized that he could not continue this work singlehanded. He knew, also, that his brethren were called to the same way of life, although they were ashamed to follow it; for as yet they did not fully realize this, nor were they discerning enough to say, ‘We also will go out for alms.’

 

So he said to them, “My dearest brothers, little children, do not be ashamed to go out for alms, for our Lord made Himself poor in this world for our sakes, and we have chosen to follow His example on the road of true poverty. This is our heritage, which our Lord Jesus Christ has won and bequeathed to us and to all who desire to live after His example in most holy poverty. I solemnly assure you that many of the noblest and wisest men of this age will join our company and regard it as a great honour to go out begging. So go out for alms confidently and gladly with the blessing of God. You should be more willing and happy to go for alms than a man who brings back an hundred coins in exchange for one　, because you are offering the love of God to those from whom you ask alms when you say, “Give us alms for the love of the Lord God,” for in comparison with Him heaven and earth are as nothing.’

 

But because the friars were as yet few in number, he could not send them out two by two, but he sent them singly through the towns and villages. So when they returned with the alms they had obtained, each of them showed blessed Francis the alms that he had received. And on would say to another, ‘I have received more alms than you.’ And blessed Francis was glad when he saw them so happy and cheerful. And thenceforward each of them readily asked permission to go out begging.
