회칙을 따르려 하지 않는 관구 봉사자들에게 한 회답

성 프란치스코가 작성했던 두 번째 회칙을 분실한 뒤 아시시의 레오 형제와 볼로냐의 보니죠 형제는 함께 또 하나의 회칙을 만들기로 하여 성 리에띠에서 가까운 폰떼 꼴롬보에 올라 그리스도의 지시대로 회칙을 만들었다.

 

그러자 많은 봉사자들이 성 프란치스코의 대리자인 엘리아 형제에게 몰려와서

"우리는 프란치스코형제가 새 회칙을 만들고 있다고 듣고 있는데 너무 까다로와 우리가 지키기에 어렵지 않을까 두렵습니다. 그러니 대리자께서 우리들이 이 회칙에 얽매이기를 원하지 않는다고 말씀해 주셨으면 합니다. 자기 자신을 위해서면 몰라도 우리를 위해서라면 마련하지 않도록 해 주십시오."라고 했다.

 

엘리아 형제는 거룩한 사부의 나무람을 받을까 두려워 가길 거절했으나 그들 모두가 간청하여 혼자서가 아니라 그들 모두와 함께 가게 되었다.

 

엘리아 형제는 성 프란치스코가 서 있는데 다가가서 그를 불렀다. 그가 대답을 한 후 그들을 보고는

"이 형제들이 뭣 때문에 여기 왔습니까?"하고 물었다.

 

"저들은 봉사자들인데 형제가 새 회칙을 마련하고 있다는 말을 듣고 그것을 까다롭게 만들까 두려워하고 있습니다. 그들은 그 회칙에 구속받고 싶어하지 않으며 형제를 위해서면 몰라도 자기네들을 위해서라면 만들지 말아 달라는 것입니다."라고 엘리아 형제가 대답했다.

 

 이 말에 성 프란치스코는 얼굴을 하늘로 향해 "주여, 그들이 저를 믿고자 하지 아니하오니 제가 옳지 않사옵니까?" 하고 그리스도께 기도하였다.

 

바로 그때 거기 있던 모든 이들은 하늘에서 그리스도의 음성이 들려 오는 것을 들었다.

 

"프란치스코여, 이 회칙 어느 것도 당신의 것이 아니라 나의 것입니다. 나는 회칙 조문이 글자 그대로 준수되기를 바랍니다. 그 어떤 주석도 붙이지 마십시오. 나는 인간의 약함이 무엇을 이룰 수 있는지 알고 있으며, 내가 얼마나 그들을 도와야 하는 지를 알고 있습니다. 그러니 그 회칙을 준수하려 하지 않는 자는 그 회를 떠나게 하십시오."라고.

 

그러자 성 프란치스코는 그 봉사자들을 향해

 

"여러분은 들었어요! 이 말씀을 되풀이하기를 바랍니까?"하고 말했다.

 

봉사자들은 자기네들의 잘못을 뉘우치고 어쩔 줄을 몰라하며 돌아갔다.

PROLOGUE

 

St. Francis’s reply to Minister who were unwilling to obey the Rule.

 

After the second Rule written by blessed Francis had been lost, he went up a mountain (Monte Colombo, near Rieti) with Brother Leo of Assisi and Brother Bonizo of Bologna, to draw up another, and under the guidance of Christ he had it written down. But many Ministers came in a body of Brother Elias, the Vicar of blessed Francis, and said, ‘We hear that Brother Francis is drawing up a new Rule, and we fear that he will make it so harsh that it will be impossible for us to keep it. So we would like you to go and tell him that we are not willing to be bound by this Rule. Let him make it for himself, and not for us.’ But Brother Elias feared a rebuke from the holy Father, and refused to go. And when they all pressed him, he said that he would not go without them, so they all went together.

When Brother Eelias approached the place where blessed Francis was standing, he called to him. And when he had answered and saw the Ministers, he asked, ‘What do these Brothers want?’ Brother Elias said, ‘They are Ministers, who hear that you are drawing up anew Rule, and they fear that you intend to make it too harsh. They effuse to be bound by it, and ask you to make it for yourself, and not for them.’

 

At this bless Francis raised his face to heaven and spoke to Christ, saying, ‘Lord, was I not right when I said that they would not believe me?’ And all present heard the voice of Christ answer from heaven, ‘Francis, nothing in this Rule is yours; for all is Mine. I wish the Rule to be obeyed to the letter, to the letter, without a gloss, without a gloss. I know what the frailty of man can achieve, and I know how much I intend to help them. So let those who are not willing to obey the Rule leave the Order.’

 

Then blessed Francis turned to the friars and said, ‘You have heard! You have heard! Do you want this to be repeated?’ And the Ministers confessed their fault and went away confused and terrified.
