제48장 맛사의 야고보 형제가 세계의 모든 작은 형제들을 한 그루 나무 형상 속에서 보았으며 또한 각 형제들의 덕행과 공로와 결점을 알게 된 일

하느님께서 신비의 문을 열어주셨고 성서와 미래의 일들에 관하여 완전한 지혜와 총명을 내려주셨던 맛사의 야고보 형제는 성덕이 매우 높았다. 그래서 에지디오 형제와 몬티노의 마르코 형제, 쥬니페로 형제, 루치도 형제가 그를 평하여 말하기를 “이 세상에서 하느님 앞에 야고보 형제보다 더 훌륭한 인물은 일찍이 못 보았다”라고 할 정도였다. 이 야고보 형제를 나는 무척 만나보고 싶었는데 그 까닭은 내가 에지디오 형제의 동료였던 요한 형제에게 어떤 영적인 일을 설명해 달라고 부탁하였더니 요한 형제가 이렇게 말했기 때문이다. “영적 생활에 관해서 가르침을 받고 싶으면 맛사의 야고보 형제와 이야기해 보시오. 에지디오 형제도 그분한테 배우고자 했으니까. 그분의 이야기는 한마디도 덧붙이거나 뺄 수가 없습니다. 그분의 심령은 하늘의 신비를 모두 꿰뚫어 알고 있고, 그분의 말은 그대로 성령의 말씀이기 때문입니다. 이 세상에서 내가 야고보 형제만큼 만나보고 싶은 사람은 없습니다.”

그 후 요한 형제가 총장이 된 초기였다. 야고보 형제가 한번은 하느님께 기도드리는 중에 깊은 탈혼에 빠져 사흘 동안이나 황홀경에서 육신의 감각을 완전히 잃은 무아지경 속에 있었다. 그의 형제들은 그가 혹시 죽지나 않았나 하고 걱정하였다. 그러나 그 황홀한 상태에서 하느님께서는 그에게 우리 형제회의 운명과 앞으로 다가올 모든 것을 세밀히 계시해 주신 것이다. 이런 이야기를 들을 때마다 야고보 형제를 만나 담화하고 싶은 나의 욕망은 한층 더해갔다.

이윽고 하느님의 섭리로 야고보 형제를 만날 기회를 얻은 나는 그에게 이렇게 간청했다. “제가 당신에 대하여 들은 소문이 정말이라면 제게 숨기지 말아주십시오. 제가 듣기로는 당신이 사흘 동안 깊은 탈혼 상태에 빠져 있을 때 하느님께서 당신께 우리 형제회에 장차 일어날 일을 계시해 주신 걸로 알고 있습니다. 당신이 순명으로 마르카 관구장 마태오 형제께 밝힌 내용을 그 관구장님께서 저에게 말씀해 주셨습니다.”

그러자 야고보 형제는 매우 겸손하게 마태오 형제가 말한 것은 진실이라고 긍정했다. 마르카의 관구장인 마태오 형제가 알려준 내용은 다음과 같다: 하느님께서는 우리 형제들 중 한 사람에게 형제회에 앞으로 일어날 모든 일을 계시해 주셨는데 그가 바로 야고보 형제다. 하느님께서는 그에게 현 교회의 상황과 장래에 대하여 여러 가지를 계시해 주신 뒤 환시를 통해서 매우 아름답고 커다란 나무의 모습을 보여주셨다. 그 나무뿌리는 황금으로 되어있었고 그 열매는 사람들이었는데 모두 작은 형제회의 형제들이었다. 그 큰 가지는 형제회의 관구 수효만큼 뻗어 있었으며 관구를 표시하고 있는 가지에는 각 관구에 있는 형제들의 그 수효만큼 매달려 있었다. 그래서 그 형제는 전 형제회원과 각 관구의 수와 그 형제들의 이름, 나이 조건, 직책, 직위, 품위, 성덕과 죄도 다 알았다.

그 나무 꼭대기에는 파르마의 요한 형제가 있고 이 나무 중심에서 뻗어나간 가지들의 끝에는 모든 관구의 관구장이 있었다. 그 다음에는 아주 크고 눈부시게 하얀 옥좌에 그리스도께서 앉아 계신 것을 보았다. 그리스도께서는 성 프란치스코를 부르시어 그에게 생명의 영이 가득히 담긴 잔을 주시며 말씀하시기를 “가서 네 형제들을 만난 생명의 영인 이 잔을 마시게 주어라. 사탄의 영이 그들을 거슬러 일어나 내려치겠고 그들 중에 많은 이들이 넘어져 아주 다시 일어나지 못할 것이기 때문이다”라고 말씀하셨다. 그리고 그리스도께서는 동행할 두 천사를 성 프란치스코에게 내주셨다.

그리하여 성 프란치스코는 생명의 영인 그 잔을 형제들에게 주려고 갔는데 요한 형제부터 시작하였다. 요한 형제는 그 잔을 받아서 정성껏 단숨에 다 마셨다. 그러자 별안간 그 형제는 태양처럼 환히 빛났다.

그 형제 다음에도 성 프란치스코는 다른 모든이에게 차례로 잔을 내밀었다. 그러자 마땅한 경외심과 경건한 마음으로 받아서 모두 마신 이들은 그중에 적었다. 그 잔을 정성껏 받아서 모두 마신 이는 갑자기 태양처럼 찬란히 빛났고 그 잔을 전부 엎지르고 정성껏 들지 않은 이들은 시커멓고 어둡고 흉측하게 되어 보기에도 끔찍스러웠다. 그 잔을 마셨어도 흘려버린 이들은 그 마신 분량의 많고 적은 정도에 따라서 빛나거나 어두운 그늘이 덮였다.

생명의 잔을 알뜰히 마심으로써 무한한 천상적 광명의 깊은 심연을 관조할 수 있게 된 요한 형제는 어떤 다른 형제들보다도 한결 빛났다. 이 천상적 광명 속에서 위에 말한 나무를 휩쓸고 큰 가지들을 뒤흔들어 놓을 재난과 폭풍이 있음을 미리 알게 되었다. 요한 형제는 자기가 있던 그 나무 꼭대기에서 맨 끝으로 내려가 둥치의 밑둥에 몸을 감추고 깊은 생각에 잠겨 있었다.

보나벤투라 형제는 생명의 잔을 일부는 마시고 그 나머지는 쏟아버렸는데 그는 요한 형제가 앉았다가 내려온 그 꼭대기 자리로 올라갔다. 그가 그곳에 있으려니까 그의 손톱이 철손톱이 되어 면도날같이 예리하고 날카로와졌다. 그때 그 형제는 자기가 올라갔던 자리에서 떠나더니 요한 형제를 해칠 맘으로 잔뜩 분노하여 세차게 덤벼들려 하였다. 이것을 본 요한 형제는 큰 소리를 지르며 옥좌에 앉아 계신 그리스도께 구원을 청했다. 이 비명에 그리스도께서는 성 프란치스코를 불러 잘 베어지는 부싯돌을 주면서 “이 톱을 가지고 가서 보나벤투라 형제가 요한 형제를 잡아 찟으려는 손톱을 자르고 해치지 못하게 하라”고 명하셨다.

성 프란치스코는 부싯돌을 받아들고 위기에 처한 그곳으로 달려가 그리스도께서 명하신대로 즉시 실행하였다.

그 일이 끝나자 폭풍이 몰려와서 나무를 몹시 뒤흔들었으므로 여러 형제들이 낙엽 떨어지듯 땅 위에 뚝뚝 떨어졌다. 생명의 잔을 모두 흘려버린 형제들이 먼저 땅에 떨어져서 온통 암흑과 고통뿐인 곳으로 악마가 끌어갔다. 그러나 요한 형제와 잔을 모두 마셨던 다른 형제들은 생명과 영원한 빛과 행복이 넘치는 찬란한 곳으로 천사들이 옹위하여 옮겨갔다.

이 환시를 본 야고보 형제는 자기가 본 것을 하나하나 똑똑히 알아보았고 각 사람의 이름, 상태, 신분에 따라 구별할 수가 있었다. 나무를 흔들던 폭풍이 오래 계속 되었기 때문에 드디어 나무는 쓰러지고 바람은 그 나무를 날려 보냈다.

어둡고 무시무시하던 폭풍이 멎자 곧 황금나무 뿌리에서 또 한그루의 나무가 돋아났다.

이 나무는 온통 황금으로 되었으며 황금 잎과 황금 꽃과 황금 열매가 눈부시게 생겨나왔다. 이 나무와 이 나무의 무성함과 그 높이와 그 아름다움과 그 향기와 그 싱싱함에 대해서는 이야기를 하지 않는 것이 사실 더 좋으리라.

48. How Brother James of Massa Saw in a Vision All the Friars Minor in the World

Brother James of Massa-to whom God opened the door of His secrets and gave a perfect knowledge and understanding of Holy Scripture and of the Future-was so saintly that Brother Giles of Assisi and Brother Mark of Montino used to say that they knew no one in the world who was greater in God's sight. Brother Juniper and Brother Lucido felt the same way. When Brother John, the companion of Brother Giles, was my spiritual director, I wanted very much to see him. For while I was asking Brother John about certain spiritual matters, he said to me: "If you want to be well instructed in the spiritual life, hasten to have some talks with Brother James of Massa, because Brother Giles wanted to be instructed by him. And nothing can be added to or taken away from his words, for his mind has penetrated into the secrets of Heaven, and his words are the words of the Holy Spirit. And there is no man on earth whom I have wanted so much to see."

This Brother James, about the beginning of the ministry of Brother John of Parma, was once rapt in an ecstasy while praying, and he remained unconscious for three days, so that the friars began to wonder whether he was dead. And in that rapture God revealed to him an understanding of Scripture and a knowledge of the future. And therefore, when I heard about it, my desire to see him and talk to him increased.

And when it pleased God that I have an opportunity to speak to him, I questioned him in this way: "If what I have heard about you is true, please do not hide it from me. For I heard that when you remained lying almost dead for three days, God showed you among other things what was going to happen in our Order. Brother Matthew, to whom you revealed it under obedience, said so."

For Brother Matthew, who was then Minister of the Province of the Marches, summoned him after that rapture and ordered him under obedience to tell him what he had seen.

Now Brother Matthew was a man of marvelous gentleness and holiness and simplicity. And he would often tell the friars in his talks to them: "I know a friar to whom God has shown all that will happen in our Order-and also some amazing secrets which, if they were uttered, would hardly be understood or even believed."

Now Brother James revealed to me and told me, among other things, something very astounding, that is, that after many things which were shown to him concerning the condition of the Church Militant, he saw in a vision a certain very beautiful ad high tree, and its roots were of gold, and its fruits were men, and all of them were Friars Minor. And the number of its principal branches corresponded to that of the provinces in the Order, and each branch had as many fruits as there were friars in that province. And then he knew the number of all the friars in the whole Order and in each province and also their name and face and age and condition and rank and position and their honors and graces and merits and faults.

And he saw Brother John of Parma standing on the highest part of the central branch of that tree, and on the tops of the branches which were around that central branch stood the ministers of all the provinces. And after this he saw Christ sitting on a very great white throne. And Christ called St. Francis and gave him a chalice full of the spirit of life, and sent him forth, saying to him: "Go and visit your friars. And let them drink from this chalice of the spirit of life, for the spirit of Satan will rise up and attack them, and many of them will fall and will not rise again." And Christ gave St. Francis two angels to go with him.

Then St. Francis come to offer the chalice of life to his friars as he had been ordered to do. And he began by offering it to Brother John, the Minister General, who accepted the chalice from St. Francis' hand and drank it all quickly and devoutly. And after he had drunk, he suddenly became all luminous and bright like the sun.

And after him St. Francis offered the chalice of the spirit of life to all the others, one after another, but very few of them accepted it with fitting reverence and devotion and drank all of it. Those few who did take it reverently and drank it all suddenly became as bright as the sun. But those who spilled it all or did not take it reverently became dark and black and deformed and horrible to see, like devils. And those who drank part but spilled part became more or less luminous or dark according to the degree of their drinking of spilling.

But shining more brightly than all the others on the tree was the above-mentioned Brother John who, having drunk more fully from the chalice of life, had a profound insight into the depths of God's true light, and in it he perceived that the whirlwind of a great storm was arising against that tree and would shake and tear its branches. Therefore he went down from the top of the branch where he had been standing, past all the branches, and hid himself in the solid part of the tree's trunk.

And while he gave himself to contemplation there, Brother Bonaventure, who had drunk part of the chalice and had spilled part, went up to the branch and place which Brother John had left. And when he was in that place, the nails of his fingers turned to iron and became as sharp and cutting as razors. And leaving his place, he wanted to attack Brother John with rage and fury, to hurt him. But seeing this, Brother John cried for help to Christ, who was sitting on the throne. And at his cry, Christ called St. Francis and gave him a very sharp flintstone and said to him: "Go and with this stone cut the nails of Brother Bonaventure with which he wants to tear Brother John, so that he cannot hurt him!"

Then St. Francis came and cut Brother Bonaventure's nails as Christ had ordered him to do. And so Brother John stayed in his place, shining brightly.

After this, a violent hurricane arose and struck the tree so strongly that the friars began to fall from it. And those who had completely spilled the chalice of the spirit of life fell first. And those who fell turned dark and were carried away by devils to realms of darkness and pain. But Brother John and those who had completely drunk the chalice were carried by angels to the realm of eternal life, light, and glory.

And he who saw the vision understood clearly and remembered every particular detail that he saw, such as the membered every particular detail that he saw, such as the names and persons and places and ages and states of everyone whom he saw in the realms of light and darkness. And the hurricane and fierce storm lasted, with the permission of God's justice, until the tree was torn up by the roots and crashed to the ground and the wind blew it completely away.

Now as soon as that hurricane and storm stopped, from the root of the tree, which was of gold, came forth another tree that was all of gold and that produced golden fruits and flowers. Regarding that tree's growth, depth, fragrance, beauty, and virtue, it is better to be silent than to speak now.

But I do not want to omit one thing which he who saw this vision used to tell, for it sounded very noteworthy to me. For he said that the way in which the Order would be reformed would be very different from the way in which it was founded, because the working of the Holy Spirit, without there being a leader, will choose uneducated youths and simple, plain persons who are looked down upon. And without their having any example or teacher-even against the teaching and practice of the teachers-the Spirit of Christ will select them and fill them with holy fear and a very pure love of Christ. And when their number has increased in various places, then He will send them an utterly pure and saintly shepherd and leader, wholly conformed to Christ.
