제50장 요한 형제가 위령의 날 미사중에 많은 영혼들이 연옥을 벗어나는 것을 본 일

앞에 말한 요한 형제가 교회가 명하는 대로 모든 성인의 날 다음날에 죽은 영혼들을 위하여 킅 사랑과 경건한 연킽의 마음으로 지극히 높은 성사 - 죽은이들한테는 어떤 선행보다도 효험이 크기 때문에 망자들의 영혼들이 원하는 것은 무엇보다도 이 성사다 - 를 드렸는데 그는 신심의 열과 초자연적인 형제애의 감미로움으로 자신이 모두 다 녹아 없어지는 듯하였다.

이 미사중에 그리스도의 성체를 경건히 들어올려 하느님 아버지께 바치면서, 그 형제는 모든 영혼을 구속하고자 십자가에 매달리신 복되신 성자 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 통하여 그분에 의해 창조되고 구속된 이 영혼들을 연옥의 고통에서 구해 달라고 간절히 기도하였다. 그랬더니 당장 그 자리에서 무수한 영혼들이 연옥을 벗어나오는데, 그것은 마치 새빨갛게 달아오른 거대한 용광로 속에서 작은 불똥이 수없이 튀어 오르는 것 같았다. 또한 산이 와 죽은이들을 위하여 매일같이 성체의 빵으로서 봉헌되는 그리스도의 수난과 공로 때문에 그 영혼들이 천국으로 오르는 것을 그는 보았다. 지극히 거룩하신 성체는 마땅히 영원무궁토록 경배 받으실 분이다.

50. How Brother John of Alverna, While Saying Mass on All Souls' Day, Saw Many Souls Liberated from Purgatory.

Once when Brother John of Alverna was saying Mass on the day after All Saint's Day for all the souls of the dead, as the Church has ordained, he offered with such fervent charity and compassionate pity that most high Sacrament-which the souls of the dead desire more than all the other things we can do for them because of its efficacy-that he seemed to be consumed by the ardor of his devotion and his supernatural brotherly love.

When therefore during that Mass he reverently elevated the most holy Body of Christ and offered It to God the Father, praying to Him that for the love of His Blessed Son Jesus Christ, who had hung on the Cross to save souls, He might mercifully deign to free from the sufferings of Purgatory those souls whom He had created and redeemed, all of a sudden he saw an almost countless number of souls going out of Purgatory like innumerable sparks of fire issuing from a blazing furnace. And he saw them flying up to their heavenly home through the merits of Christ who hung on the Cross for humanity's salvation and who is offered up every day in that most holy Host for the living and the dead. For He is the Blessed God and Man. Light and Life, Redeemer and judge and everlasting Savior. Amen.
