제47장 그리스도의 모친께서 병중에 있는 한 거룩한 형제에게 약 세통을 가져다주신 이야기

일찍 소피아노 수도원에는 성덕과 은총이 뛰어나 온전히 신성한 것처럼 보이는 작은 형제가 있었는데 그는 자주 하느님께 탈혼되었다.

그 형제는 특별한 관상의 은총을 받았기 때문에 가끔 하느님께로 온통 흡수되어 드높여지면 갖가지 예쁜 새들이 날아와서 그의 어깨와 팔과 손에 다정하게 앉아서 구슬같은 목소리로 노래해 주곤하였다. 그는 또 늘 혼자 있기를 좋아하고 거의 말을 하는 일이 없었으나 누가 무엇을 질문하면 너무도 부드럽고 다정하고 현명하게 대답하므로 혹시 천사가 아닌가 하고 생각될 정도였다. 그는 관상과 기도에 특출한 사람이었으므로 다른 형제들은 그를 매우 존경했다.

그러나 마침내 덕망이 있는 생활을 모두 마치게 된 아 형제는 하느님의 섭리로 중병에 걸려 아무것도 먹고 마실 수가 없었다. 더구나 그는 이 세상의 약은 조금도 쓰려고 하지 않고 오직 천국의 의사이신 복되신 예수와 그 어머님 성모 마리아께 마음의 모든 신뢰를 걸고 있었기 때문에 하느님의 너그러우심으로 성모님의 인자하신 방문을 받고 깊은 위안을 얻기에 합당했다.

병석에 누워 온 정성과 마음을 다하여 경건하게 임종을 준비하고 있던 어느날, 그리스도의 모친이시며 지극히 복되시고 영광스러우신 동정 마리아께서 많은 천사들과 천국의 동정 성녀들을 거느리시고 신비스럽고 찬란한 광채에 싸여 그 형제가 누운 자리로 가까이 오셨다. 그는 성모님을 우러러보자 영혼과 육신에 매우 큰 힘과 기쁨을 얻었다. 그는 성모님께 사랑하시는 당신 아드님에게 전구하시어 그분의 공로로써 자기를 이 비참한 육체의 감옥에서 구해달라고 눈물을 흘리며 겸손히 간청하였다. 이윽고 동정 마리아께서는 그의 이름을 다정하게 부르시며 말씀하시기를 “아들아, 조금도 걱정할 필요없다. 네 기도가 허락되어 네가 이 세상을 떠나기 전에 너에게 큰 위안이 될 힘을 주려고 찾아왔다”라고 하셨다.

그리스도의 어머니 마리아 곁에는 세 명의 거룩한 동정 성녀들이 이루 형용할 수 없이 감미롭고 향기로운 연약이 담긴 통을 하나씩 들고 있었다. 영광스러운 성모 마리아께서는 그중의 한 개를 받아들고 뚜껑을 여니 온 집안에 향기가 가득하였다. 성모님은 그 약을 한 숟갈 떠서 병자인 그 형제에게 주셨다. 그 맛을 본 그는 얼마나 큰 위로와 힘과 단 맛을 느꼈던지 마치 영혼이 육체를 떠나는 것만 같은 기쁨에 넘쳐 “그만 주십시오, 지극히 감미로우신 어머님 복되신 동정 마리아. 인류를 구하신 분이시여, 이젠 그만 주십시오, 그렇게 감미로운 맛을 저는 더 이상 도저히 견딜 수가 없습니다”라고 말하였다.

그러나 자애로우시고 어지신 성모님께서는 그의 언행이 귀엽고 사랑스러운 듯 그 연약을 거듭 내밀어 모두 먹게 하셨다. 한통이 비자 동정 마리아께서는 다른 한 개를 들고 숟갈로 떠서 또 먹으라고 하셨다.

그는 “지극히 복되신 하느님의 어머님, 처음 연약의 형기와 감미로움만으로도 내 영혼은 속속들이 녹아버리는 것 같았는데 어떻게 더 이상의 약에 견딜 수 있겠습니까? 모든 천사와 거룩한 성인들 위에 훨씬 더 뛰어나신 복된 분이시여, 간절히 바라오니 이제 그만 주십시오”라고 조심스럽게 사양하였다.

그러나 성모님께서 대답하시기를 “아들아, 이 둘째 통의 약을 좀더 맛보아라”하시며 조금 떠주시면서 말씀을 계속하셨다. “아들아! 오늘 네가 약을 충분히 먹었으니 힘을 내라. 내 아들아, 내가 멀지 않아 다시 와서 네가 그렇게 원하고 기다리고 찾던 내 아들 그리스도의 왕국으로 데려가겠다.” 말씀을 마치신 뒤 성모님은 잘 있으라는 인사를 남기고 떠나가셨다.

그 형제는 이 연약의 감미로움으로 매우 크고 많은 힘을 얻어 며칠 동안을 굶었어도 배고픔을 느끼지 않고 생기있게 지냈다.

그로부터 며칠 후 그는 형제들과 즐겁게 이야기하는 중에 때가 되어 온 영혼이 용약하는 벅찬 환희 속에 비참하고 괴로운 이 세상을 벗어나 영원한 행복의 나라인 천국으로 올라갔다.

47. How the Blessed Virgin Appeared to a Holy Friar When He Was ill

In the Marches of Ancona, in a certain solitary Place called Soffiano, there was in former times a certain Friar Minor(whose name I do not remember) of such great holiness and grace that he seemed to be godlike. And he was often rapt in the Lord.

Once when he was in a rapture and his mind was absorbed in God- for he had the grace of contemplation to a remarkable degree-various kinds of birds came to him and very tamely rested on his head and shoulders and arms and hands, and there they sang beautifully. When he came out of his contemplation, he was so overflowing with joy that he seemed rather like an angel, for then his face radiated in a marvelous way his communion with God, to such an extant that it aroused wonder and surprise in those who saw him.

He always remained alone and spoke very rarely, and he was in prayer or contemplation almost continually day and night. But when he was asked a question, he answered so pleasantly and wisely that he seemed more like an angel than a man. And the friars felt great reverence for him. He was pleasant to everyone and his conversation was always spiced with divine salt.

He persevered in this praiseworthy practice of the virtues until the end of his heavenly life. And by disposition of Divine Providence he became so mortally ill that he was unable to take any food. And he did not want to be given any medicine for his body. But he placed all his confidence in the heavenly for his body. But he placed all his confidence in the heavenly doctor Jesus Christ and in His Blessed Mother. And he merited the grace of being visited and consoled in a wonderful way by the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Queen of Mercy.

For one day while he was lying alone and was preparing himself for death with all his strength, the Blessed and Glorious Mother of Christ herself appeared to him, accompanied by a throng of angels and holy virgins, amid a bright light, and she went close to the sick friar's cot. When he saw her, he was filled with inexpressible joy and consolation of both mind and body. And he began to beg her humbly to pray to her beloved Son that He might deign by His merits to lead him out of the dark prison of the flesh. And as with many tears he kept fervently begging her to do so, the Blessed Virgin Mary answered him, calling him by his name and saying: "Do not fear, my son, because your prayer is granted. For I have seen your tears. And I have come to give you a little consolation before you leave this life."

With the Blessed Mother of Christ there were three holy virgins, each of whom carried in her hands a box filled with an electuary that was so sweet in taste and fragrance that words cannot describe it. And as the Blessed Virgin Mary took one of those boxes and opened it, the whole house was filled with the perfume. And taking a spoon in her glorious hands, she gave a bit of the heavenly electuary to that sick friar. When he tasted it, he experienced such grace and sweetness that it seemed to him his soul would quickly leave his body. So he began to say to the glorious Virgin Mary: "No more, oh dear Mother of Jesus Christ and Blessed Lady-no more, oh blessed doctor, for I cannot bear such sweetness!"

But the merciful and kind Mother of God urged him on and consoled him by speaking a great deal to him about the Lord Jesus Christ, and she frequently made him take more of the electuary until that first box was empty.

Then as she took the second box and placed the spoon in it, the sick friar gently complained to her: "Oh Blessed Mother of God, if my soul has nearly melted from the perfume and sweetness of the first box, how can I bear the second" I beg you, oh Blessed above all the saints and holy angels, not to give me any more!"

Our Lady answered: "Son, you must take a little of this second box." And giving him a little of the second electuary, she said to him: ""Now, my son, you have had enough. But rejoice, because I shall soon come back to you, and I shall lead you to the Kingdom of my Son which you have always longed for and desired."

And saying good-by to him, she vanished from his sight. And he remained so comforted and consoled by the sweetness of that electuary, which had been brought from the apothecary of Paradise and administered to him by the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that for several days he did not take any material food, but felt strong in body and mind, for it was not a medicine of this world but of Heaven. And he was given a profound spiritual insight, and his eyes were opened by such a radiant divine light that he clearly saw in the book of eternal life all who would be saved until Judgment Day.

And a few days later, on the last day of his life, while talking with the friars and rejoicing greatly in mind and body, he passed from this unhappy life to the Lord Jesus Christ.
