제45장 펜나의 요한 형제의 회개, 생애, 기적, 그리고 죽음

펜나의 요한 형제가 아직 어린애로 세속 옷을 입고 마르카 관구에 살고 있던 어떤 날 밤에 아주 잘생긴 어린이가 나타나서 “요한아, 성 스테파노 성당으로 가라. 거기서 내 작은 형제들 중 하나가 설교를 하고 있으니 그 말을 명심해 듣고 그 가르침을 믿으라. 내가 그를 그곳에 보낸 것이다. 너는 큰 여행을 하고 나중에 내게로 오게 되리라”하며 불렀다. 이 말을 듣고 벌떡 일어난 이 어린 것은 자기 영혼에 커다란 변화가 일어난 것을 깨달았다.

이 아이가 성 스테파노 성당에 가니 설교를 들으려고 모여든 남녀 군중돌이 꽉 차 있었다. 설교할 사람은 필립보 형제라고 하는이로서 안코나의 마르카 관구의 최초 형제들 중 하나였는데 그 당시 마르카에는 수도원이 몇 개밖에 세워지지 않았다. 필립보 형제는 설교대로 올라가 인간 지혜의 말로써가 아니라 그리스도 성령의 능력으로 영원한 생명의 왕국을 설파하셨다.

설교가 긑난 뒤 이 어린 것은 필립보 형제에게 가서 다음과 같이 말했다. “신부님, 형제회에 저를 받아주신다면 저는 착하게 살며, 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 충실히 섬기겠습니다”하였다. 필립보 형제는 그 소년이 놀랍게도 천진난만하여 자기를 하느님께 바치려는 잘 준비된 마음을 보고 아무 날에 리가나티로 자기를 찾아오면 받아주겠다 하고 말하였다. 바로 그 수도원에서는 관구회의를 개최하게 되어 있었다.

이 말 때문에 소년은 타고난 천진한 마음에서 이것이야말로 자기에게 계시된 큰 여행이며, 그 다음에 천국낙원에 가게 되리라고 생각했다. 아마 수도회에 입회하자마자 그렇게 되리라 믿었는지 찾아가 입회했다. 그러나 입회 후에도 자기의 생각이 실현되지 않은 것을 보고는 관구장이 프로벤자 관구에 가고 싶은 이는 아무라도 허가해 주겠다는 말을 듣고 거기에 가고 싶은 생각이 간절하였다. 마음속으로 이 여행이야말로 천국에 가기 전에 자기가 해야 하는 큰 여행일 것이라고 믿었기 때문에 거기에 가게 해달라고 말하기가 참으로 부끄러워 생각다 못해 자기를 수도회에 넣어준 필립보 형제에게 사실 이야기를 쭉 하고 프로벤자 관구에 갈 은혜를 얻도록 대신 청해달라고 부탁했다. 필립보 형제는 그의 뜻이 순수하고 기특하여 허가를 받도록 해주었다. 그래서 요한 형제는 기뻐 어쩔 줄 모르며 이 여행이 끝나면 천국에 가게 될 것이라고 굳게 믿고 출발하였다.

그러나 그 형제는 하느님의 섭리로써 이와같은 기대와 열망을 품은 채 25년 동안을 그곳에서 보냈다. 그는 거룩한 성품을 지녔고 경건의 길을 걷고 있었으며 바르게 살고 거룩하고 모범적이고 형제들과 세상 사람들로부터 총애를 받아 성덕이 점점 자라났으므로 깊은 사랑을 받았다.

하루는 요한 형제가 경건히 기도하는 중에 눈물을 흘리며 자기의 소망이 이루어지지 않고 이 세상 순례의 길이 너무 오래 끄는 것을 한탄하고 있었는데 복되신 그리스도께서 나타나셨다. 그리스도를 뵙자 그의 영혼은 그만 녹아버렸다. 이때 그리스도께서는 “내 아들 요한 형제야, 네 소원을 내게 말하라”하고 말씀하시므로 그 형제는 대답하기를 “내 주여, 저는 주님 이외에는 청할 것이 아무것도 없습니다. 제 모든 죄를 용서하시고 제게 주님이 꼭 필요할 때가 오면 다시한번 주를 우러러뵈올 수 있는 은총을 주십시오” 하였다. 이 말을 들으신 그리스도께서는 “네 기도는 이루어졌다”고 한마디 말씀을 남기시고 떠나셨고 뒤에 남은 요한 형제는 위안으로 가득차 있었다.

마침내 마르카의 형제들은 그 형제의 성덕이 높다는 소문을 듣고 총장에게 부탁드려 마르카에 돌아오라는 명령을 내리게 하였다. 요한 형제는 그 명을 받고 나서 이번 여행을 끝내면 그리스도의 약속대로 천국에 갈 것을 생각하고 싱글벙글 좋아하며 길을 떠났다.

그는 마르카 관구에 돌아와서 30년간 거기서 살았다. 이제는 그의 친척 중 아무도 그를 알아보는 이가 없었고, 다만 하느님의 인자하심으로 하느님께서 하신 약속이 이루어질 날을 기다리고 있었다. 그러는 동안 그 형제는 여러번 수도원장직을 현명하게 수행했으며 하느님께서는 그를 통하여 여러 가지 기적을 행하셨다.

이 형제가 하느님께로부터 받은 여러 가지 특은 가운데는 예언하는 은총도 들어 있었는데 그가 수련장으로 있을 때였다. 한 수련자가 마귀에게 무서운 공격과 유혹을 받아 그만 그 유혹에 빠져버려 요한 형제가 돌아오는 대로 형제회를 떠날 결심을 품었다. 요한 형제는 하느님께서 계시해 주신 대로 그 수련자가 아직 고해하기도 전에 그 유혹의 모양과 경과를 샅샅이 이야기해 주고 “내 아들, 내가 오기를 기다려 강복을 받기 전에는 나가려고 하지 않았으니, 하느님은 형제에게 성총을 주시어 결코 이 형제회를 떠나지 않고 오히려 이 형제회 안에서 또 하느님의 은총 속에 죽게 해주셨다”고 훈계했다. 그래서 그 수련자는 착한 의지를 굳게하고 형제회에서 거룩한 형제가 되었다. 이 모든 것은 우고리노 형제가 나한테 말해준 이야기이다.

요한 형제는 마음이 명랑하고 침착했으며 좀처럼 말을 하지 않는 사람이었다. 기도와 신심에 깊이 들여 특히 밤기도 후에는 결코 자리에 눕거나 자기 방에 돌아가는 일 없이 날이 밝도록 기도하면서 성당에 남아 있었다.

어느날 밤기도 후 기도하고 있는데 하느님의 천사가 그에게 나타나서 말하기를 “요한 형제야, 네가 오래동안 기다리던 너의 나그넷길은 드디어 끝날 때가 왔다. 그러므로 나는 하느님의 이름으로 알려주노니 무엇이든지 원하는 은총을 구하라. 또 알려줄 일은 연옥에 가서 하루 동안 지내겠는지 이 세상에서 7일 동안 고통을 받겠는지 아무쪼록 원대로 선택하라”하였다.

요한 형제는 이 세상에서 차라리 7일동안 고통당할 것을 택하였더니 그는 갑자기 여러 가지 병으로

눕게 되어 심한 열이 나고, 손발에 염증이 생기고, 복통이 일어나는 등 여러 질병이 한꺼번에 몰려들었다. 그러나 그에게 가장 견디기 어려운 일은 한 마리 마귀가 앞에 나타나서 그가 이전에 생각과 행동으로 지은 모든 죄가 적힌 큰 두루마리 하나를 들고 서 있는 것이었다. 그리고는 그에게 “너는 생각과 말고 행실로 범한 이 죄들 때문에 지옥 밑바닥으로 떨어지는 것이다”하고 단언하였다. 그러자 그는 형제회에 있다는 것도 또 자기가 행한 선행도 기억하지 못했고, 형제회에서 지금까지 살아 있다는 것도 그 어느 것 하나 조금도 생각나지 않았다. 단 한가지 마귀가 자기에게 들려준 대로 자기가 지옥에 떨어진다고만 믿었다. 누가 좀 어떠냐고 물으면 “안되겠습니다. 나는 지옥에 떨어질 테니까요”하고만 대답하였다.

형제들은 그런 것을 보고 나이 많은 형제 몬테 룹비아노의 마태오 형제를 불러오기로 하였다. 이 마태오 형제는 성인과도 같은 사람이요, 요한 형제의 친밀한 벗이었다. 이 마태오 형제가, 그런 고통이 시작된 지 7일 째 되는 날 요한 형제 곁에 문병와서 좀 어떠냐고 물었더니 그 형제는 여전히 “안되겠네, 어쨌든 지옥에 떨어지게 되었으니까”라고 하였다.

그래서 마태오 형제가 말하기를 “형제는 자주 내게 성사를 보았고 그때마다 형제의 죄를 모두 사해 주었는데 그것이 생각나지 않습니까? 그리고 형제는 여러 해 동안 이 형제회에 살면서 하느님을 섬겨왔는데도 그것을 생각못하겠습니까? 또 더구나 하느님의 인자하심은 세상의 모든 죄악을 훨씬 초월하시고 복되신 구세주 예수님은 우리를 구속하기 위하여 헤아릴 수 없는 대가를 치르셨는데 형제는 그것도 생각못해 내겠습니까? 그러니 큰 희망을 가지고 있으시오, 형제는 틀림없이 구원될 것입니다”하였다.

이 말과 더불어 단련기간이 다 채워졌기 때문에 유혹은 사라지고 다시 만물이 소생하는 봄날 같은 위안이 괴롭고 괴로웠던 그의 품에 다시 찾아왔다. 요한 형제는 전보다 더한 기쁨에 벅차서 마태오 형제에게 “피곤하고 밤도 깊었으니 주무십시오”하고 권하였다. 마태오 형제는 그 옆을 떠나려 들지 않았으나 하도 여러번 간청하므로 자리를 떠나 잠자리로 갔다.

요한 형제는 간호하는 형제와 단 둘이 병석에 남았다. 그런데 보라! 복되신 그리스도께서 찬란한 광채에 둘러싸여 넘치는 감미로운 향취 속에 이 초라한 병실로 내려오시지 않는가! 이전에 그에게 약속하신 대로 그가 다시 주를 필요로 하는 간절한 이때에 재차 나타나신 것이었다. 주께서는 그의 모든 병을 깨끗이 낫게 해주셨다.

요한 형제는 두 손을 모아 비참한 이 세상의 긴 여행을 그처럼 복되게 끝내주신 그분께 감사드리고 자신을 그리스도의 두 손에 돌려드리니 자기가 오래동안 그렇게도 갈망하던 주 그리스도와 더불어 이 죽을 생명에서 영원한 생명으로 들어갔다. 이 요한 형제의 유해는 라·펜나·디·산·죠반니의 수도원에 안치되어 있다

45 About the Conversion, Life, Miracles, and Death of the Holy Brother John of Penna

When Brother John of Penna, one of the bright stars of the Province of the Marches, was still a young boy in the world, one night a very beautiful boy appeared to him and called him, saying: "John, go to Santo Stefano where one of My friars is due to preach. And believe his teaching and listen to his words, for I have sent him there. And after you have done that, you will have a long journey to make. And afterward you shall come to Me."

He immediately arose and felt a marvelous change in his soul. And going to Santo Stefano, he found there a great crowd of men and women who had come together from different villages in order to hear the word of God. And he who was to preach was a friar called Brother Philip, who was one of the first friars who came to the Marches of Ancona, when only a few Places had been founded in the Marches.

This Brother Philip rose up and preached with great devotion, not in the learned words of human wisdom, but announcing the Kingdom of God and eternal life by the power of the Spirit of Christ.

Now when the sermon was over, the above-mentioned boy, Brother John, went to Brother Philip and said to him: "Father, if you would receive me in the Order, I would be glad to do penance and to serve the Lord Jesus Christ."

The friar, being a holy and enlightened man, perceived the boy's marvelous innocence and ready will to serve God, and he said to him: "Come to see me in the city of Recanati on a certain day, and I will see that you are received." (For a Provincial Chapter was to be held in that Place then.)

In his innocence the boy reflected in his heart: "This will be the long journey that was received in the Order. So he went and was received. But his expectation was not fulfilled then.

And during the Chapter the minister said: "Whoever wants to go to the Province of Provence by merit of holy obedience - I will send him there." Now when Brother John heard this, he felt a great desire to go there, thinking that perhaps that was the long journey he had to make before he went to Paradise. Brother Philip, ho had arranged for him to be received in the Order, and said to him: "Father, I ask you to obtain this grace for me: that I may be able to go and stay in Provence." For in those times the friars used to volunteer to go to foreign Provinces so that they might be like pilgrims and strangers in this world and fellow citizens of the saints and servants of God in Heaven.

Brother Philip, seeing his simplicity and holy intention, obtained permission for him to go to that province. And Brother John set out with great joy, feeling sure that when he had finished that journey, he would go to Heaven.

But as it pleased God, he stayed in that province for twenty-fine years, living a life of great and exemplary sanctity, but hoping every day that what had been promised to him would be fulfilled. And although he grew in virtue and holiness, and he was loved by both the friars and the lay people in all that province, he nevertheless could not see the least sign of his desire being granted.

One day while he was devoutly praying and weeping and lamenting to God that his exile and pilgrimage in this life were being prolonged too much, the Blessed Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him, at the sight of whom his soul melted with love.

And Christ said to him: "my son, Brother John, ask Me for whatever you want."

And he answered: "My Lord, I don't know what to say, because I want nothing but You. But I ask You only for this: that You forgive me all my sins, and give me the grace to see You again when I need You still more."

The Lord said to him: "Your prayer is granted." And after saying that, He vanished from his sight. And Brother John remained greatly consoled.

At last the friars of the Marches heard about his reputation for sanctity and arranged with the General that a written order be sent to him to return to the Marches. When he saw that order, he gladly set out, saying to himself: "This is the long journey after which I will go to God."

Now when he returned to his own province, he was not recognized by any of his relatives. But from one day to the next he waited and expected that God would have mercy on him and fulfill the promise that had been made to him.

But his life was still further prolonged, for he stayed on a good thirty years after his return to the Marches. And during that time he often served as guardian with great discretion. And the Lord performed many miracles through him.

Among a number of other gifts, he had the spirit of prophecy. For once when he was absent from his Place, one of his novices was attacked by the devil and so strongly tempted to leave the Order that he yielded and decided that he would leave as soon as Brother John came back to the Place.

But by the spirit of prophecy Brother John knew about that temptation and decision. And as soon as he came home, he called that novice and said to him: "Come, son- I want you to confess." And when he came, Brother John added: "First listen to me, son."

And then he told the novice all about his temptation, as God had revealed it to him. And he concluded: "My son, because you waited for me and did not want to leave without my blessing, God has given you this grace: that you will never leave this Order, but that you will die in this Order with the Lord's blessing."

And then that novice was strengthened in his good intention, and he stayed in the Order and became a holy friar.

And Brother John himself told me, Brother Ugolino, all these things.

Now Brother John was always a man with joy and peace of mind. He was silent and rarely spoke. And he was a man of great devotion and prayer, and especially after matins he did not go back to his cell, but stayed praying in church until dawn.

And one night after matins while he was praying fervently, an angel of the Lord appeared and said to him: "Brother awaiting so long. therefore I announce to you on God's behalf that you may ask for whatever grace you desire-and also that you must choose either one entire day in Purgatory or seven days of suffering in this world."

And when Brother John had rather chosen seven days of suffering in this world, he suddenly fell ill with a number of different sicknesses in succession. For he was plagued with strong fevers and pains and gout in hands and feet and convulsions and intestinal troubles and many other sufferings. But what was worse than all the other afflictions was that a devil stood before him holding a large scroll on which were written all his sins and fault and failings of thought and deed, and the devil said to him: "Because of all these things which you thought and said and did, you are damned to the depths of hell!"

And the sick friar forgot all the good things that he had ever done, and that he was or ever had been in the Order. But he thought that he was utterly damned, as the devil was saying. So when he was asked by anyone how he felt, he would answer: "Bad-because I am damned!"

Seeing this, the friars of the Place sent for an old friar named Brother Matthew of Monte Rubbian who was a very holy man and an intimate friend of Brother John.

Now Brother Matthew came to him on the seventh day of his tribulations and greeted him, saying: "How are you feeling, dear Brother?"

He replied: "Bad-because I am damned!"

Then Brothe Matthew said: "How can you say that? Don't you remember that you after confessed to me, and I completely absolved you from all your sins? Don't you also remember that you have served God many years in this holy Order? Besides, don't you remember that the mercy of God is greater than all the sins in the world, and that Christ Our Blessed Savior paid an infinite price to God our Father in order to redeem us? So you can be perfectly sure that you will be saved and not damned."

And then, when he had said that, as the seven-day period of Brother John's purgation was over, his temptation left him, and a feeling of consolation came over him. And with great joy he said to Brother Matthew: "Because you are tired and it is already time for bed, I want you to go and rest."

Now Brother Matthew did not want to leave him, but Brother John insisted so much that finally he left and went to get some rest.

And while Brother John remained alone with the friar who was taking care of him, Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a very bright light and sweet fragrance, just as He had promised to appear to him once more when he would need Him most. And He completely cured him of all his sicknesses.

Then Brother John joined his hands and gave thanks to God for having brought his long journey in this sad life to a happy end, and he was united for all eternity to his Lord Jesus Christ, like a chosen member to the head. And so with great joy and confidence and consolation he commended and gave up his soul to God and passed from this mortal life to eternal life with the Blessed Christ, whom he had desired and awaited for so long a time.

And this Brother John was buried in the Place of Penna San Giovanni.
