제 44장 그리스도의 모친과 복음사가 성 요한과

 

 

제 44장 그리스도의  모친과 복음사가 성 요한과 성 프란치스코가 몬티첼로의 베드로에게 발현한 일. 또 이분들 중에 누가 그리스도의 수난에 대하여 가장 큰 고통을 당했는지 말해준 이야기

안코나 속관구 포라노 수도원에서 함께 살던 시절의 일이다, 앞에 말한 콘라도 형제와 베드로 형제는 마르카 관구에서 반짝이는 두 별이요 천사였다. 그 둘 사이에는 사랑과 우정이 얼마나 깊었던지 똑같은 한 개의 심장과 한 영혼만을 갖고 있는 듯이 보였고 서로 이런 약속을 맺고 있었다. 즉, 하느님께서 주시는 어떤 위로도 서로 터놓고 이야기해 주기로 하였던 것이다.약속 후 하루는 베드로 형제가 기도하면서 그리스도의 수난을 열심히 묵상한 일이 있었다. 그런데 십자가 아래에는 지극히 복되신 성모 마리아와 사랑받던 사도 요한, 영혼의 고통으로 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못박힌 성 프란치스코가 그려져 있었다. 그 세 분들 중에 누가 그리스도의 수난을 가장 많이 체험하였을까? 주님을 낳으신 어머니인가? 최후 만찬 때 주님의 품에 안기었던 제자인가? 그렇지 않으면 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못박힌 성 프란치스코인가? 하는 것을 알고 싶은 생각이 일어났다.

그 형제가 이같이 경건하게 묵상하고 있을 때 동정 마리아께서 성 요한, 성 프란치스코와 더불어 천국의 행복스러운 영광의 고귀한 옷을 입으시고 나타나셨다. 그러나 성 프란치스코는 성 요한 보다 아름다운 옷을 입고 계셨다. 베드로 형제가 이 발현을 보고 깜짝 놀라고 있는데 성 요한 사도가 그를 위로하여 말하기를, “두려워 말라, 사랑하는 형제여, 우리는 너를 위로하고 네 의문을 풀어주려고 왔다. 자, 보라, 그리스도의 어머님과 나는 주의 수난에 대하여 다른 어떤 피조물보다도 슬픔을 많이 받았다. 그러나 우리 다음에 성 프란치스코가 다른 누구보다도 가장 큰 고통을 체험하였다. 그분이 이와같이 영광 속에 있는 것은 그 까닭이다” 하였다.

“그리스도의 지극히 거룩한 사도여, 왜 성 프란치스코가 입은 옷이 당신 것보다 더 아름답게 보입니까?”하고 물으니, 성 요한은 이렇게 대답하였다. “그 까닭은 다름이 아니라 이 세상에 있을 적에 그분이 나보다 더 남루한 옷을 입고 있었기 때문이다.”이와같이 말하고 성 요한은 손에 들고 있던 찬란한 옷을 베드로 형제에게 주며 “너에게 주려고 가져온 이 옷을 받아라”하면서, 그 옷을 베드로 형제에게 입히려고 하자 그는 깜짝 놀라 넋을 잃고 땅에 엎어지면서 “콘라도 형제, 사랑하는 콘라도 형제, 빨리 뛰어와 이 놀라운 일들을 보십시오”하며 외쳤다. 그 말에 이 거룩한 발현은 사라졌다. 콘라도 형제가 왔을 때 그 형제는 일어난 모든 일을 자세히 들려주고 둘은 함께 하느님께 감사를 드렸다.

주: 이 이야기는 라틴어 원본에서는 찾아볼 수 없다. 아씨시에는 이 이야기에 나오는 혀에가 보았다는 것과 동일한 그림이 아직도 남아 있다“ 즉, 오상을 받은 성 프란치스코가 성모 마리아와 요한 사도와 함께 십자가의 발 밑에서 양손을 벌린채 그리스도를 바라보는 그림.

 

 

44 How Brother Peter of Montecchio Was Shown Who Suffered Most from the passion of Christ

at the time when the above-mentioned Brother Conrad and Brother Peter-two bright stars in the Province of the Marches and two heavenly men-were living together in the Custody of Ancona, at the Place of Forano (which they liked very much), there was so much love and charity between them that both seemed to have one heart and one soul, and they bound themselves together in this agreement: that in charity they much reveal to each other all the consolations which the mercy of God might grant to either one.

One day, after they had made that pact, it happened that Brother Peter was praying and meditating devoutly on the Passion of Christ. And His Most Blessed Mother and john the beloved Disciple were standing before Christ crucified-and our blessed Father Francis was also there with his Stigmata. And there came to him the holy desire to know which of those three had suffered most from the Passion of Christ: the Mother who had given Him birth or the beloved Disciple who had rested on His breast or st. Francis who was crucified with christ.

And while he was thinking these devout thoughts, weeping many tears, the

Virgin Mary appeared to him with St. John the Evangelist and our blessed father francis, dressed in very noble raiment of heavenly glory; but St. francis seemed to be dressed in a more beautiful garment than St. John.

And as Brother Peter was very frightened by this vision, St. John comforted him and said to him: "Do not be afraid, dear Brother, because we have come to console you and to clear up your doubt. Know therefore that the Mother of Christ and I grieved more than any other creature over the Passion of Christ, but after us St. Francis felt greater sorrow than any other. And that is why you see him in such glory."

And Brother Peter asked him: "Most holy apostle of christ, why does the clothing of St. francis seem more glorious than yours?"

St. John replied: This is the reason: This is the reason: because when he was in the world, for the love of Christ he wore plainer clothes than I."

And having said these words, St. John gave Brother Peter a glorious garment which he was holding in his hand, and said to him: "Take this robe which I have brought to show you."

And when St. John wanted to clothe hm in that robe, Brother Peter in amazement began to run and shout(for he was awake, not asleep, when he saw this): "Brother Conrad, dear Brother Conrad, come quick! Come and see something marvelous!" And at those words the holy vision vanished.

Then, when Brother Conrad came, he told him everything in detail. And they gave thanks to God. Amen.
