제 41장 덕망높은 시몬 형제가 형제회를 떠나고자 하는 큰 유혹

제 41장 덕망높은 시몬 형제가 형제회를 떠나고자 하는 큰 유혹 속에 있던 어떤 형제를 구해낸 이야기

형제회 초기 성 프란치스코가 생존하여 있을 때, 아씨시의 한 청년이 입회하였는데 시몬 형제라고 불렀다. 하느님은 그를 잘 가꾸시고 성총을 주시어 탁월한 관상의 재능을 주시고 그 심령을 높이 들어올려 주셨으므로, 그의 전 생애는 성덕의 거울이었다. 이런 것은 그가 오래동안 같이 살았던 이들로부터 내가 들어서 아는 바다.

그 형제는 혹 형제들과 한자리에 앉으면 언제나 하느님께 관하여 이야기하였다. 학교교육(라틴어)은 받은 일이 없었으나 하느님과 그리스도의 사람에 대하여는 뜻이 깊고 숭고하게 이야기하였으므로, 그 이야기는 초자연적인 이야기와 같이 들렸다.

어느 날 밤, 그 형제는 하느님에 대하여 이야기하려고 맛사의 야고보 형제와 함께 숲에 들어가 밤새도록 끝없는 감미로움 속에 하느님의 사랑에 대하여 이야기하였다. 그런데 야고보 형제는 후에 말하기를 밤이 새도록 이야기하였는데도 아침이 되니 잠깐동안 이야기한 것처럼 여겨졌다고 말한다.

이와같이 시몬형제는 성령의 달콤하고 그윽한 향기 속에서 천상의 비추심과 하느님 사랑의 방문을 받게 되어, 그런 시간이 곧 오리라는 것을 예감할 때는 자주 자기 침대에 누웠다. 그것은 성령의 고요한 감미가 그에게 영혼뿐 아니라. 육신의 안식도 강요하기 때문이었다. 그러한 하느님의 방문을 받을 적에는 그는 자주 하느님께로 탈혼하여, 육체적인 일에는 도무지 무감각하게 되었던 것이다.

한번은 그와같이 탈혼하여 내적으로는 하느님의 사랑에 불탔지만 육체적 감각으로써는 외적인 것에 아무것도 느끼지 못했다. 그때 한 형제가 정말로 그런가 아닌가를 시험해 보려고 시뻘겋게 타오르는 숯불을 집어서 그의 맨발 위에 얹었다. 그러나 시몬 형제는 아무것도 느끼지 못했거니오, 숯불이 꽤 오래동안 피어 있다가 저절로 사그라졌는데도 전혀 덴 자국이 생기지 않았다.

시몬 형제는 식탁에 앉으면 언제나 육신의 음식을 먹기 전에 영혼의 양식을 취하고, 하느님께 관한 이야기로 다른이에게도 영혼의 양식을 취하고, 하느님께 관한 이야기로 다른이에게도 영혼의 양식을 나누어 주곤 했다. 이전에 산 세베리노의 한 청년이 그의 경건한 이야기를 듣고 회개하였는데 세속에서 이 청년은 매우 허영심이 컸고 세속적인 욕망을 품고 있는 데다 귀족 가문의 출신으로 지극히 사치스런 몸차림을 하고 있었다. 이 청년이 형제회에 들어온 후, 시몬 형제는 그의 세속 옷을 자기 방에 보관해 두었으며, 청년은 시몬 형제로부터 회칙 지키는 법을 배우기 위하여 시몬 형제와 함께 거했다.

그런데 모든 일을 모조리 훼방놓을려고 애쓰는 악마는 이 청년의 육체에 강한 자극과 불붙는 육욕을 불어넣었으므로 그는 아무리 해도 이 유혹을 막아낼 수가 없었다. 그래서 시몬 형제에게 찾아가 말하기를 “제가 입고 온 세속 옷을 내어주십시오. 도저히 육체의 유혹을 참지 못하겠습니다”하니 시몬 형제는 매우 불쌍한 마음이 들어 “내 아들, 잠깐 내 옆에 앉으시오” 하고 하느님께 관하여 쭉 이야기했다. 그러는 동안 그 청년에게서 모든 유혹은 깨끗이 떠나갔다.

이 육욕의 유혹은 그 후에도 가끔 그를 괴롭혔으나, 그 청년이 옷을 돌려달라고 할 때마다 시몬 형제는 하느님께 관한 이야기를 함으로써 유혹을 쫓아버렸다.

이러한 악마의 습격이 여러번 있은 후, 그 유혹은 드디어 이 세상 그 어떤 것으로도 능히 막아 낼 수 없을 만큼 세력이 강해져서 대단한 힘으로 그 청년에게 엄습해 왔다. 그는 시몬 형제에게 가서 자기는 더 이상 수도원에서 머물러 있을 수 없으니까 세속 옷을 곧 내어달라고 졸라대었다.

시몬 형제는 전과 같이 그를 자기 옆에 앉히고 이야기를 했더니 청년은 고뇌와 설움에 북받쳐 머리를 시몬 형제의 품에 파묻고 울었다. 시몬 형제는 그를 측은히 여겨 하늘로 눈을 향하고 청년을 위하여 하느님께 열심히 기도드리는 중에 탈혼되었는데, 하느님께서는 그의 기도를 들어주셨다. 시몬 형제가 제 정신으로 돌아오자 그 청년은 씻을 듯이 유혹에서 완전히 구출되어 있었다. 심지어 그런 유혹을 한 번도 받은 적이 없는 듯한 그런 기분이었다. 청년은 이글이글 타는 불덩어리인 시몬 형제에게 가까이 했기 때문에, 유혹의 불은 성령의 불로 바뀌어져 고뇌에 젖었던 마음이 하느님과 이웃에 대한 애덕의 불로 드높이 타오르는 것이었다.

그런 일이 있은지 얼마를 지나 한 악인이 잡혀서 두 눈알을 뽑히게 되었다. 이 청년은 동정심에 넘쳐서 두려운 기색도 없이 대담하게 총독 앞으로 걸어가 모여앉은 배심원들 앞에서 눈물을 흘리며 겸손하게 애원하면서, 자기의 눈 하나를 대신 뽑아내고 죄수의 눈알은 하나만 뽑아 그가 두 눈을 다 뽑히는 신세가 되지 않게 해달라고 말하였다. 총독과 배심원들은 이 형제의 위대한 사랑의 불길에 탄복하여 두 사람 다 용서해 주었다.

하루는 시몬 형제가 나무숲에서 기도중에 영혼의 깊은 위안을 느끼고 있는데, 한떼의 까마귀가 까악까악하고 떠들며 방해를 놓았다. 그는 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 명을 내려 여기서 날아가버려 다시는 오지 말라고 하자, 까마귀들은 즉시 날아가서 그 후 그 장소와 그 근처에 두 번 다시 까마귀 소리를 들을 수 없게 되었다. 이 기적에 대한 소식은 수도원이 있었던 페르모 지방에 널리 퍼졌다.

주: 여기서부터 나머지 13장은 마르카 관구에 살았던 몇몇 거룩한 형제들에 관한 이야기들이다. 우리는 본 41장에 나오는 중심인물인 시몬 형제에 대해 아는 바가 거의 없다. 그는 1250년에 세상을 떠났으며, 에지디오 형제, 루피노 형제, 레오 형제와 밀접히 연관되어 있다.

41. About Brother Simon of Assisi and His Marvelous Life

In the beginning of our Order, when St. Francis was still living, a certain young man of Assis joined the Order and was called Brother Simon. The Almighty Lord God gave him such graces and consolations and raised him to such a degree of contemplation and elevation of mind that his whole life was a mirror of holiness, as I heard from those who were with hi for a long time.

He was very rarely seen outside his cell. If he sometimes went among the friars, he was always eager to talk about God. He never had any schooling and he nearly always lived in the woods. And yet he spoke so profoundly and so loftily about God and the love of Christ that his words seemed supernatural.

Thus one evening when he went into the woods with Brother James of Massa to talk about God, they spoke so very sweetly and devoutly about Christ's love that they spent the whole night in that conversation. And in the morning it seemed to them that they had been there only a short while, as he who was with him told me.

This Brother Simon received such consolations from the Holy Spirit that when he felt a divine illumination and visitation of God's love coming over him, he used to lie down on his bed as if he wanted to sleep, because the sweet peace of the Holy Spirit required of him not only mental but also physical rest. And in such divine visitations he was often rapt in God and became completely insensible to material things.

For one time it happened that while he was thus rapt in God and seemed to be quite unconscious of the exterior world, though wholly burning within with divine love and graces, a friar who wished to prove by an experiment whether he really was insensible as he appeared, went and took a live coal from the fire and placed it on his bare foot. But Brother Simon did not feel the coal at all, and moreover he felt no pain and suffered no wound in his flesh, although that coal stayed on his foot until it had entirely burned itself out.

When this Brother Simon would sit down for meals with the friars, before he took any food for the body, he would take and give to his companions some food for the soul by speaking of God. Thus it happened one time that while he was speaking very fervently of God with the friars a certain young man of San Severino was converted to the Lord. In the would he had been nobel and delicate in constitution and very sensual. But Brother Simon, when he received that young man into the Order and gave him the habit, kept in his charge the secular clothes he had taken off. And the young man stayed with Brother Simon in order to be instructed by him in the religious life.

But our enemy the devil, who strives to hinder every good, rushed upon that young man like a roaring lion, and by his evil breath, which sets coal on fire, enkindled within his flesh such burning torments that the boy lost hope of being able to resist so strong a temptation. Consequently he went to Brother Simon and said to him: "Give me back the clothes I wore in the world, because I can't stand the strain of this sensual temptation any longer!"

But Brother Simon felt great compassion for him and said to him: "Sit down here with me for a moment, my son." And while Brother Simon was pouring some beautiful words about God into the ears of that boy, he extinguished the flames of lust and took his temptation completely away.

Later the temptation returned several times, and the youth again asked for his clothes, but Brother Simon drove it away by talking to him about God.

Finally one night the temptation attacked him so much more violently than usual that he could not resist it for anything in the world, so he went to Brother Simon and said: "You must give me back my clothes now, because I simply cannot stay any longer!"

Then Brother Simon as a devout father had compassion on him and said, as he usually did: "Come, son, and sit beside me a while."

The distraught boy went to Brother Simon and sat down beside him. And while he was talking about God, the boy rested his head on Brother Simon's chest, because of his melancholy and depression. But Brother Simon, feeling very sorry for him raised his eyes toward Heaven, and while he was praying to God with grat devotion and compassion for the young man, he was rapt in an ecstasy, and finally his prayer was granted by God. And when Brother Simon came back to himself, the boy felt that he was completely freed from his temptation, as if he had never experienced it, so that the harmful ardor of the temptation was changed into the fervor of the Holy Spirit. And because he had been close to the live coal-Brother Simon-he became all afire with love for God and for his neighbor.

For one day when a certain criminal was captured and condemned to lose both his eyes, that young man courageously went, moved by compassion, to the governor while the council was in session. And with many tears and prayers he asked that he be given the grace that one of his eyes be extracted so that the criminal should not be deprived of both his eyes. But the governor and the council, seeing the youth's great fervor and burning charity, granted the criminal a complete pardon.

Moreover, one day when Brother Simon was praying in the woods and feeling a very great consolation from the Lord in his soul, a flock of birds, called rooks because of the great noise and clamor they make, began to disturb him with their cries, so he ordered them in the name of Jesus to go away and never to come back there again. And it is wonderful to relate that, although that Place of Brunforte in the Custody of Fermo existed for over fifty years, those birds were never seen or heard again anywhere around the Place or district or entire region. And I. Brother Ugolino di Monte Santa Maria, stayed there for three years, and I observed that wonder in a sure way, and it was known among both the lay people and the friars of the whole Custody.
