제 38장 성 프란치스코가 계시로써 엘리아 형제가 단죄받아

제 38장 성 프란치스코가 계시로써 엘리아 형제가 단죄받아 형제회 밖에서 죽을 것을 알았고 그래서 엘리아 형제를 위하여 하느님께 간구하였더니 그 기도를 들어 허락하신 일

성 프란치스코와 엘리아 형제가 한 수도원에 있을 때의 일이었다. 엘리아 형제가 지옥에 떨어질 것과, 형제회를 거슬러 변절하게 될 것과, 드디어 형제회 밖에서 죽으리라고 하느님께서 성인에게 계시해 주셨다. 그러므로 성 프란치스코는 엘리아가 아주 싫어져서 말 하거나 이야기를 건네는 일도 없게 되었다. 엘리아가 저기서 오면 성인은 서로 마주치지 않도록 길을 비켜서 다른쪽으로 갔다. 엘리아도 차차 눈치를 채게 되어 성인이 자기를 실어한다는 것을 알아차렸다. 그는 그 이유를 알고 싶어서 어느날 성인께 여쭈어보자 하고 가까이 다가갔더니 성인이 피하므로 엘리아 형제는 그를 정중하게 붙들며 왜 그렇게 자기를 피하며 함께 있는 것과 이야기하기를 꺼리는지를 말해달라고 간곡히 청했다.

성 프란치스코는 대답하기를 “형제는 죄 때문에 형제회를 배반하고 형제회 밖에서 죽을 것이며, 또 하느님께서는 형제가 단죄받을 사람이라는 것도 계시해 주셨소”하고 말했다.

이 말을 들은 엘리아 형제는 이렇게 간청했다. “존경하는 사부님, 저의 애원을 들어주십시오. 그 때문에 저를 피하거나 사부님 슬하에서 내치지 마시고, 오히려 착한 목자로서 그리스도를 본받아 이 어린양을 다시 찾아 거두어들이십시오. 사부님이 도와주시지 않는다면 이 양은 망하고 맙니다. 바라오니 하느님께 매달리시어 할 수만 있다면 지옥에 떨어지는 심판을 면하도록 저를 위하여 빌어주십시오. 죄인이 행실을 고치면 하느님께서 그 심판을 거두신다고 기록되어 있기 때문입니다. 만일 지옥불 한가운데 있다 하더라도 사부님이 저를 위해 하느님께 간구해 주시면 좀 선선함을 느끼게 되리라 할 만큼 사부님의 기도를 믿고 있습니다. 사부님, 이렇게 간절히 비오니, 부디 이 몸을 하느님께 맡겨주시어 죄인을 구원하러 오신 주께서 그 인자하심 속에 나를 받아주시게 해주십시오.”

엘리아 형제는 아주 겸손하게 눈물로 하소연했으므로 성인은 인정깊은 어버이로서 그를 위해 하느님께 간구해 주마고 약속하고 그대로 해주었다.

성인은 그를 위해 마음을 집중하고 열심히 하느님께 기도했고 마침내 그 기도가 응답된 것을 계시로 알았다. 그러나 엘리아 형제의 지옥 판결에 관한 것을 취소하는 데 한하여 성인의 기도를 들어주셨으므로 결국 그의 영혼은 지옥은 면하게 될 것이지만, 틀림없이 형제회를 나가서 밖에서 죽으리라는 것이었다.

이러한 계시가 있은 지 오래지 아니하여 시리아의 왕 프레데릭이 교회를 반역했을 때, 왕에게 협조나 조언을 한 무리들이 교회으로부터 파문당했는데, 그 당시 가장 지혜로운 사람 중 하나로 소문났던 엘리아 형제도 이 프레데릭 왕에게 기용되어 그 편으로 들어가 교회를 배반하고 형제회를 버린 변절자가 되었다.

교황은 그를 파문에 처하고 그가 입었던 성 프란치스코회의 수도복을 압수했다. 이렇게 파문당한 엘리아 형제가 중병까지 걸려 고생하는 중에 친척되는 형제 한 사람이 그 소식을 듣고 그를 찾아왔다. 그는 평수사로서 형제회에서 선량하고 착실한 생활을 하던 분으로 엘리아를 방문하여 이런 이야기 저런 이야기를 하던 끝에 “사랑하는 형제, 나는 형제가 파문당하여 형제회를 나가서 이와같은 상태로 죽게 되는 것이 정말 마음 아픕니다. 형제를 이 위험에서 구하는 데에 내가 할 수 있는 어떤 수단이나 방법이 있거든 말해주십시오, 기꺼이 어떤 수고라도 다 하겠습니다”라고 말했다.

엘리아가 이렇게 대답했다. “형제여, 내가 할 수 있는 일이라고는 이런 수밖에 없습니다. 형제는 교황 성하를 찾아뵙고 그리스도와 성 프란치스코에 대한 사랑으로 내 파문을 풀어주시고 수도복을 돌려주시도록 간청해 주십시오. 나는 그리스도의 종 프란치스코 형제의 가르침을 따라 세속을 버렸습니다.”

그의 친척인 형제는 엘리아의 소원을 기꺼이 들어주어 노력하겠다고 말한 다음, 그 길로 교황 성하를 찾아 뵙고 그의 발  아래 엎드려 겸손하게 그리스도와 그의 종 프란치스코에 대한 사랑으로 엘리아 형제를 용서해 달라고 간청했다. 하느님의 뜻도 그러하였으므로 교황께서는 엘리아 형제가 돌아오는 것을 허락하시고 엘리아가 살아 있거든 교황의 이름으로 파문을 풀고 수도복을 돌려주어도 좋다고 승낙하셨다.

그는 기쁨에 넘쳐 급히 엘리아 형제의 집에 돌아와 보니 아직 살아 있기는 하나 임종이 가까워오고 있었다. 급히 엘리아 형제의 파문을 풀어주고 수도복을 입혀주자, 엘리아 형제는 이 세상을 떠났다. 그 영혼은 성 프란치스코의 공로와 전구로써 구원을 받았다.

주: 이 이야기도 역시 원래의 라틴어 원본에는 없다. 엘리아 형제는 1211년 형제회에 입회했으며 1217년에는 시리아의 관구장이 되었다. 성 프란치스코가 성지를 방문했을 때 성인과 함께 이태리로 돌아왔고 1221년 성 프란치스코는 그를 형제회의 부총장으로 선출했으며 1227년까지 계속 그 자리에 머물러 있었다. 그 후 1232년에 총장으로 재선되었다. 교황 그레고리오 9세는 로마의 총회에서 그를 해임시켰다. 엘리아 형제는 나중에 파문까지 당했으나 1253년 다시 교회와 화해하고 세상을 떠났다.

38. How It Was Revealed to St. Francis That Brother Elias Was to Leave the Order.

At one time when St. Francis and Brother Elias were staying together as members of the community in a certain small Place, it was revealed to St. Francis by God that Brother Elias was damned and would leave the Order and finally die outside the Order. Consequently St. Franics conceived such a distaste for him that he did not want to speak to him or converse with him or see him or eat with him. And if it sometimes happened that Brother Elias was coming toward him, St. Francis would turn aside and go in another direction in order not to meet him.

When this had happened several times, Brother Elias began to notice and realize that St. Francis was displeased with him. So wishing to know the reason, one day he went up to St. Francis to speak to him, and when St. Francis tried to avoid him, he respectfully detained him by force and began to beg him earnestly to explain to him the reason why he was avoiding his company and conversation that way.

And St. francis answered him: "Because it has been revealed to me by God that as a result of your sins you will leave the Order and die outside the Order. Moreover, it has been revealed to me by the Lord that you are damned."

On hearing this, Brother Elias burst into tears and threw himself at St. Francis' feet, saying: "My reverend Father, I beg you by the love of Christ not to avoid me and drive me away from you because of that, but-like a good shepherd who, following the example of Christ, goes to seek the sheep that has wandered-seek and find and accept this sheep that will perish without your help. And I beg you to pray your holy prayers to God for me, your sheep, so that He may, if it be possible, revoke the sentence of my damnation. For it is written that God can remit the sentence if the sinner makes amends for his fault. And I have so much faith in your prayers that if I were lying in the depths of hell and you prayed to God for me, I would feel some relief. So I beg you again to recommend me, a sinner, to God who came to save sinners, that He may not forget me at the end, but that when the end of my life comes, He may deign to have mercy on me."

And Brother Elias said this with great devotion and weeping, so that St. Francis was moved with fatherly pity and promised him that he would pray to God for him. And while he was very fervently praying to God for him, he understood by a revelation that his prayer had been granted by the Lord as to revoking the sentence-that is, that in the end the soul of Brother Elias would not be damned, but that he surely would leave the Order and die outside the Order.

And that is what happened. For when Frederick the King of Sicily revolted against the Church and consequently the Pope excommunicated him with all those who gave him a야 and advice, Brother Elias, who was considered one of the wisest men in the world, at the invitation of King Frederick went over to his side and became a rebel against the Church and an apostate from the Order. For that he was excommunicated by the Pope and deprived of the habit of St. Francis.

And while he was thus excommunicated, he became seriously ill. When his own brother-a lay brother who had remained in the Order and a man of good life and pure and praiseworthy conversation-heard about his illness, he went to visit him. And among other things he said to him: "My dear brother, I am very sorry that you are excommunicated and that you will die without a habit outside your Order. Bur if you can see any way by which I could deliver you from that great danger, I would be glad to go to any trouble for you."

Now Brother Elias answered: "Dear brother, I see no other way but for you to go to the Pope and ask him, for the love of Christ and His servant and standard-bearer St. Francis, through whose teaching I left the world, to absolve me from the excommunication and restore to me the habit of the Order."

The brother replied: "I will gladly labor for your salvation, if I can obtain that grace."

And leaving him, he went to the Pope and very humbly asked him to have mercy on his brother for the love of Christ and of St. Francis. And through the grace of God and the help of St. Francis' prayers it happened that the Lord Pope granted to the brother that if he went back and found Brother Elias alive, he might absolve him of the excommunication and restore the habit to him.

So the brother joyfully hurried away from the Papal Court and hastened back to Brother Elias in order to bring him that absolution. And by Divine Providence and the prayers of St. Francis, he found Brother Elias alive but very close to death, and he absolved him from the excommunication. And after putting on the habit again and receiving the last Sacraments of the Church, Brother Elias ended his life in peace and went to the Lord. And it is believed that he obtained this grace at the end and that his soul was saved through the merits and prayers of St. Francis, in which Brother Elias had placed so much faith.
