제39장 파도와의 성 안토니오 형제가 추기경 회의에서 놀라운 설교를 한 일

오묘한 성령의 그릇 파도와의 성 안토니오 형제는 성 프란치스코가 뽑은 제자요 동료 중의 하나로서, 성인은 그를 자신의 주교라 불렀는데 하루는 추기경 회의에 참석한 교황님과 추기경들 앞에서 설교하게 되었다. 그 자리에는 희랍인, 라틴계통의 사람, 프랑스인, 슬라브인, 영국인 등 언어가 서로 다른 세계 각국 사람들이 참석하고 있었다.

성령에 불붙은 성 안토니오는 깊은 신심에서 알아듣기 쉽게 그리고 아주 명확하고 빈틈없이 하느님의 말씀을 설명했으므로, 그 회의에 참석한 이들은 서로 국적이 달랐지만 모두 자기 나라 말로 설교를 듣는 것처럼 분명하고 확실하게 성 안토니오의 말을 알아들었다. 넋을 빼앗긴 모든 사람들은 마치 성신강림 때 성령의 능력을 받아 온갖 외국어로 설교한 사도들의 옛 기적이 다시금 일어난 것같이 느끼고 서로 감탄하여 말하기를 “저기 서서 설교하는 분은 스페인 사람이 아닌가?”하였다. 교황님도 성 안토니오의 성서에 대한 해박한 지식에 놀라움을 금치 못하시고 “참으로 이 사람은 언약의 궤이며 성서의 보고이라”라고 격찬하셨다.

주: 본장과 다음 장은 성 안토니오에 대해 쓴 것으로 ‘잔 꽃송이“ 제1부에서 성 프란치스코와 그의 동료들에 대한 이야기 (1장-38장)와 다음의 마르카 관구의 몇몇 거룩한 형제들의 이야기(41장-53장) 사이에 일종의 다리를 놓아주고 있다. 성 안토니오는 성 프란치스코의 첫 동료가 아니다. 그는 1195년 포르투갈의 수도 리스본에서 탄생했다. 처음에 아오스딩회에 입회했다가, 1220년에 마침내 프란치스코회에 입회했다. 그는 1221년 아씨시 총회에 참석했으며 거거서 성 프란치스코를 만났다. 탁월한 설교자로 프랑스와 이태리 등지에서 복음을 전파했으며, 1231년에 세상을 떠났다. 그는 프란치스코회의 가장 유명한 성인 중의 한분이다.

39 How St. Anthony Preached and Was Heard Men of Different Languages

At one time that wonderful vessel of the Holy Spirit, St. Anthony of Padua, one of the chosen followers and companions of St. Francis, whom St. Francis used to call his bishop, was preaching before the Pope  and Cardinals in a consistory where there were men from different countries-Greeks and Latins, French and Germans, Slaves and English-and men of many other different languages and idioms. And being inflamed by the Holy Spirit and inspired with apostolic eloquence, he preached and explained the word of God so effectively, devoutly, subtly, clearly, and understandably that all who were assembled at that consistory, although they spoke different languages, clearly and distinctly heard and understood every one of his words as if he had spoken in each of their languages. Therefore they were all astounded and filled with devotion, for it seemed to them that the former miracle of the Apostles at the time of Pentecost had been renewed, when by the power of the Holy Spirit they spoke in different languages.

And in amazement the said to one another: "Is he not a Spaniard? How then are we all hearing him in the language of the country where we were born-we Creeks and Latins, French and Germans, Slaves and English, Lombards and foreigners?"

The Pope also was astonished at St. Anthony's profound knowledge of Holy Scripture and said: "He is truly the Ark of the Covenant and the Treasury of Holy Scripture!"

Such then are the soldiers whom our leader St. Francis had-companions who could nourish with the narrow of the Holy Spirit and arm with heavenly weapons against the snares of the enemy not only the flock of Christ but also the Vicar of Christ with his venerable College of Cardinals.
