제 36장 성 프란치스코가 레오 형제의 아름답고 이상한 환시를 설명하여 준 일

언젠가 성 프란치스코는 중병으로 누워 있고 레오 형제가 간호하고 있을 때의 일이다. 성인 앞에서 기구하고 있던 레오 형제는 탈혼되어 그 영혼이 넓고 물결 센 큰 강가로 인도되어 갔다. 그가 그 강을 건너는 사람들을 구경하고 있었는데 몇 명의 형제들이 무거운 짐을 지고 강 속으로 들어가는 것을 보았다. 그러자 금방 거센 물결이 밀려와서 그들을 삼켜버리는 것이 아닌가! 몇 명은 삼분의 일쯤 강을 건너고 두 세명은 강 복판까지 가고 건너편까지 가까이 건너간 이도 있었으나 물결이 거세고 등의 짐이 무거워 결국은 넘어져서 모두가 빠져 죽었다.

레오 형제는 그 광경을 보고 몹시 안타까와하며 그 자리에서 머뭇거리고 있었는데 보라! 이번에는 아무 짐도 없이 거뜬하게 걸어오는 형제들이 보인다. 그들의 머리 위에는 거룩한 가난의 광채가 눈부시게 빛나고 있었고, 그들이 강 속에 들어갔지만 아무런 위험도 없이 즉시 건너갔다. 이것을 보고 난 레오 형제는 탈혼에서 깨어 본 정신으로 돌아왔다.

그런데 성 프란치스코는 레오 형제가 환시를 본 일을 알고 그를 불러 무엇을 보았느냐고 물었다.

레오 형제가 그때 본대로 자세하게 이야기하니 성 프란치스코는 이와같이 말했다. “그대가 본 것은 사실과 부합됩니다. 그 큰 강은 이 세상이고 그 강에 빠져죽은 형제들은 자기의 복음적 서원 특히 지극히 고귀한 가난을 지키지 않은 사람들이요. 무사히 건너간 이들은 땅위의 것과 육체의 것을 아무것도 바라지 않고 소유하지 않으며 참으로 꼭 필요한 음식과 의복에만 만족하고 알몸으로 십자가에 달린 그리스도를 본받은 형제들입니다. 또한 그들은 그리스도와 거룩한 순종의 짐과 멍에를 즐겁게 기꺼이 지고 이 세상의 생명에서 영원한 생명으로 쉽게 건너가는 이들입니다.”

그리스도께 찬미. 아멘.

주: 본장은 형제회의 가난에 대한 여러 견해들을 우화적으로 표현해 주고 있다. 이 견해 차이는 성 프란치스코의 말년을 너무도 슬프게 했다.

36.How St. Francis Explained to Brother Leo a Vision Which He Had Seen

At a certain time when St. Francis was seriously ill, Brother Leo was taking care of him with great devotion and Zeal. And once while Brother Leo was near St. Francis and gave himself to prayer, he was rapt in a ecstasy and was led in spirit to a very great, broad, and rapid river.

And as he was watching those who were crossing it, he saw several friars with loads on their backs go into the river. Suddenly the powerful current swept them away, and the depth of the water sucked them under. Some others went as far as one third of the way across, and others got halfway across, and other almost all the way to the other bank. But all of them, in various ways according to their burdens, were submerged by the rushing waters and finally fell and died a cruel death, without any chance of being saved, because of their heavy burdens which they were carrying on their backs.

And Brother Leo felt very sorry for them when he saw such a tragedy.

Then all of a sudden, while he was standing there, some friars appeared without any load or burden of any kind. only holy poverty shone forth in them. And they went into the river and crossed over without any trouble. And after he had seen that, Brother Leo came to himself again.

Now St. Francis, sensing in spirit that Brother Leo had seen a vision, called him and said: "Tell me what you saw."

And after he told him everything he had seen, St. Francis said to him: "What you saw is true, for the great river is this world. The friars who were swallowed by the river are those who do not want to follow the teachings of the Gospel and do not keep voluntary poverty. But those who went across without danger are the friars who, having the spirit of God, neither love nor desire nor possess any carnal or earthly thing in this world, but 'having food and sufficient clothing' they are 'content,' following Christ naked on the Cross. And joyfully and willingly they embrace, take up, and carry every day the very light and sweet burden of His Cross and the yoke of His very holy obedience. And consequently they pass easily and without danger-indeed with joy-from this world to God, who is blessed forever and ever. Amen."
