제37장 복되신 그리스도께서 성 프란치스코에게 큰 존경과 희사물을 바친 한 부유한 귀족 기사를 성 프란치스코의 기도대로 회개시켜 수도자가 되게 한 이야기

그리스도의 종 성 프란치스코는 어느날 밤 늣게 권력있는 한 귀족을 방문했다. 성인이 집에 들어서자 그 귀족은 성인을 다정히 포옹하고 평화의 입맞춤을 하고는 불을 많이 지펴 덥게 한 후 식탁에 진수성찬을 가득 차려놓았다. 그 귀족은 성인 일행이 천국낙원의 천사나 되는 듯 온갖 성의를 다해 극진한 대접을 하고 또 묵어가게 했다. 식사 중에도 그는 줄곧 기쁜 낯으로 그들을 시중들었다.

성 프란치스코의 일행이 식사를 마치자 그 귀족은 “사부님, 사부님께 제 소유물을 모두 바치겠습니다. 만약 속옷이나 망토 그밖에 필요한 것이 있으시다면 어떤 것이든 사양치 마시고 사십시오. 대금은 제가 모두 치르겠습니다. 사부님께서 필요하신 것을 무엇이나 다 드리겠습니다. 저는 하느님의 은혜로 이렇게 많은 재산을 풍성히 모았습니다. 이 재산을 제게 주신 하느님의 사랑 때문에 주의 가난한 형제들에게 기쁜 마음으로 희사하겠습니다”하고 겸손히 말했다.

성 프란치스코는 이 귀족의 고맙고도 너그러운 호의를 보고 그에 대해 깊은 사랑을 느끼며 그곳을 떠나 돌아가는 길에 동료 형제에게 이렇게 말했다. “참으로 저 귀족은 하느님께 대하여 감사하는 마음을 가지고 있으며 이웃과 가난한 이에게 인정깊고 친절합니다. 우리 동료감으로는 참 훌륭한 사람이니 사랑하는 형제, 잘 알아두십시오. 자비는 하느님의 한 특성입니다. 그분께서는 의인과 악인에게 똑같이 태양과 비를 주십니다. 또한 정중한 예의는 애덕의 자매로서 미움을 저버리고 사랑을 보존시켜 줍니다. 나는 저 어진 사람에게서 그와같은 천상적 덕을 많이 발견했기 때문에 그를 우리 동료로 삼고 싶소. 만일 하느님께서 그의 마음을 움직이시어 하느님을 섬기는데 있어 우리와 함께 하도록 하신다면 언제 한번 그에게 다시 가보고 싶습니다. 그것을 기대하면서 하느님이 그의 마음에 수도생활의 원의를 일으켜 주시고 또한 그에게 이를 실천에 옮길 은총을 주시도록 기도드립시다.”

성 프란치스코가 그 귀족을 위하여 기도드린 후 며칠 지나 하느님이 이 귀족의 마음에 그 소망을 일게 하셨다. 성인은 동료에게 “작은 형제여, 그 인정있는 사람을 다시 찾아갑시다. 나는 하느님께 한가지 확신을 두고 있는데 그가 제물에 대해 지닌 그 관대성으로 우리 동료가 되기 위해 자기자신도 바치리라는 바로 그것입니다”하고 예언했다.

일행은 그곳으로 갔다. 집 근처에 다다라 성 프란치스코는 동료를 향해 “여기서 잠깐 기다리시오. 우리가 여기에 온 것을 보람되게 하고 그리스도의 지극히 거룩한 수난 공로로 인하여 우리가 세속으로부터 빼앗으려는 저 귀중한 보물을 가난하고 연약한 우리에게 주시도록 간청하고 싶습니다”고 말한 다음 그 귀족이 바라볼 수 있는 곳에 가서 꿇어 기도했다.

바로 그때 하느님의 섭리였기에 그 귀족은 무심코 여기저기를 바라보다가 성 프란치스코가 그리스도 앞에서 경건히 기도하고 있는 모습을 발견했다. 그리스도께서는 찬란한 광채에 싸여 성인이 기도하는 동안 줄곧 성인 앞에 서 계셨다. 그 귀족은 성 프란치스코의 몸이 땅에서 들어올려져 꽤 오래동안 있는 것도 보았다. 이 모든 일을 분명히 바라본 귀족은 하느님께 감도를 받아 세속을 떠나고 싶은 마음이 솟구쳐 올랐다. 그는 즉시 자기 저택을 뛰쳐나와 성령의 열정 속에 성 프란치스코 앞으로 달려갔다. 아직도 기도를 계속하고 있는 성인 앞에 이르자 그 발 밑에 무릎을 꿇고 자기를 입회시켜 주시어 함께 보속생활을 할 수 있도록 해달라고 간곡히 그리고 경건히 청했다.

성 프란치스코는 하느님께서 자기 기도를 들어주셨음을 보고 또한 이 귀족이 자원하여 열심히 간청하는 것을 보자 마음속에 기쁨이 벅차올라 열렬히 그를 입맞추고 자신의 군단에 이 기사를 더해주신 하느님께 감사드렸다.

이 귀족은 성 프란치스코에게 “사부님, 제게 무엇을 하라고 명하십니까? 보십시오, 저는 사부님의 말씀만 떨어지면 가난한 이들에게 재산을 모두 나누어 주어 현세의 재물을 모두 버리고 사부님과 같이 그리스도를 따를 준비가 되어 있습니다”하고 열의있는 포부를 말했다.

과연 그는 약속한 바를 실행하여 성 프란치스코의 권고대로 자기 재산을 가난한 이들에게 분배해 준 다음 수도원에 들어와 엄한 보속과 거룩한 생활과 깨끗한 성품 속에 살았다.

37. How St. Francis Was Very Kindly Received in a Home

Late one evening, when the venerable and admirable Father St. Francis arrived at the house of an important and noble gentleman, eh and his companion were welcomed and given lodging with so much reverence and courtesy that it seemed as though that nobleman was welcoming angles from Paradise. Because of this courtesy. St. Francis conceived a great affection for him. For that nobleman received St. Francis when he entered the house with a friendly embrace and the kiss of peace. And after he entered, the nobleman washed and wiped St. Francis' feet and humbly kissed them. And he lit a great fire and prepared the table with an abundance of good food. And while they were eating, he served them with a joyful ｅxpression on his face.

After they had eaten, the noble man said to St. Francis and his companion: "Father, I offer you myself and my belongings. Whenever you need habits and cloaks or anything, buy it and I will pay for it. And know that I am ready to provide for all your needs, because the good Lord has given me an abundance of worldly property, and so for love of Him I willingly give to those who are poor and in need."

Consequently St. Francis, when he was his great courtesy and affection and when he heard his generous offer, felt such love in his heart for him that later when he was going away with his companion, he said: "That gentleman certainly would make a good member of our Order: he is so grateful to God, so kind to his neighbor, so generous to the poor, and so cheerful and courteous to guests. For, dear Brother, courtesy is one of the qualities of God, who courteously gives His sun and His rain and everything to the just and to the unjust. And courtesy is a sister of charity. It extinguishes hatred and keeps love alive. And because I have observed so much divine virtue in this good man, I would be glad to have him as a companion. Therefore I wish that we go back to him some day, in case God might perhaps touch his heart so that he should want to join us in serving the Almighty. Let us pray the Lord God to infuse that desire into his heart and to give him the grace to put it into effect."

It certainly is wonderful that a few days later, after the Saint had prayed, the Lord granted the desire of his heart and did not deprive him of what he had prayed for. For a few days after he had uttered his prayer, St. Francis said to his companion: "Dear Brother, let's go to the courteous nobleman, because I have a sure confidence in God that with his generosity in temporal things he will give himself to our Order as a companion."

And taking that road they approached the house of the above-mentioned man. But before they came to him, St. Francis said to his companion: "Wait a while for me, as first I want to ask God to make our journey successful, so that Christ may deign, through the merits of His most holy Passion, to grant to us poor little weak ones the noble prey whom we are thinking of snatching from the world."

And after saying that, St. Francis began to pray very fervently in a certain place where he could clearly be seen by that courteous nobleman. And as Christ arranged matters, while that nobleman was looking here and there, he saw St. Francis praying very devoutly and standing before Christ, and the Blessed Christ standing before St. Francis in a very bright light and looking very beautiful. And in that bright light he saw that St. Francis was raised a great distance above the ground in a physical and spiritual uplifting.

When that nobleman clearly perceived all these things, the hand of the saving Lord quickly came over him, and he was so touched at heart by God and inspired to scorn and leave the world that he immediately went out of his mansion and ran in fervor of spirit toward St. Francis. And when he came to him, he found St. Francis standing on the ground, praying very devoutly. So that nobleman likewise began to pray, and he knelt down and very fervently and eagerly begged him to deign to let him do penance and stay with him.

Then St. Francis, seeing and hearing that he nobleman was urgently asking what he himself had wished, and realizing that this very wonderful conversion had been accomplished by the power of the Lord, rose to his feet in joy and fervor of spirit and devoutly embraced and kissed him, thanking and praising God for having added such a knight to his army.

Meanwhile, that man said to St. Francis: "My holy Father, what do you command me to do? At your order I am ready to give everything I have to the poor and to run after Christ with you, unburdened by all temporal things."

And so it came about that through the merits and prayers of St. Francis, and following his advice, he distributed all his property to the poor and became a Friar Minor. And he lived all the rest of his life in great penance and sanctity and purity.
