제40장 성 안토니오가 리미니라는 곳에서 바다 물고기에게 설교할

제40장 성 안토니오가 리미니라는 곳에서 바다 물고기에게 설교할 때 고기들이 줄을 지어서서 그의 설교를 들은 일

복되신 그리스도께서는 가장 충실한 일꾼인 파도와의 성 안토니오가 지닌 위대한 성덕을 나타내시어, 그의 설교와 거룩한 교설을 얼마나 경건하게 들어야 하는지 나타내 보이시기를 원하셨기 때문에 하루는 이성없는 동물 중 물고기를 써서 신앙없는 이단자들의 어리석음을 꾸짖으셨다. 하느님께서는 구약시대에도 당나귀의 입으로써 발라암의 무지를 책망하신 적이 있었다.

성 안토니오가 이교도들이 많았던 리미니에 있을 때였다. 그곳 사람들을 참된 신앙의 빛과 진리의 길로 되돌아오게 하려고 여러날 동안 계속하여 설교하고 그리스도의 신앙과 성경에 대하여 그들과 토론하였으나, 성인의 강론에 티끌만큼도 개심의 태도를 보이지 않을 뿐 아니라, 오히려 그들의 완고한 고집은 거룩한 진리의 소리를 도무지 들으려 하지 않았다.

그래서 성 안토니오는 천상의 영감을 받아 어떤 날 바닷가 강 하구로 나가 바다에 연하는 강변에 서서 하느님의 이름으로 물고기들에게 설교하기 시작했다. “바다와 강에 사는 고기 여러분, 신앙이 없는 이단자들이 듣기를 거절하는 바에야 여러분이아 하느님의 이야기를 들으시오.” 이 말이 끝나기가 무섭게 갑자기 큰 놈 작은 놈 할것없이 무수한 고기떼들이 설교를 듣자꾸나 둑을 향하여 몰려왔다. 이런 일은 바다에서나 땅에서나 도대체 처음 보는 일이었다. 고기들은 모두 머리를 물 밖으로 내밀고 조용히 줄을 지어 선 채 주의 깊은 눈초리로 성인의 얼굴을 바라보며 가만히 있는 것이었다. 둑 가까이에는 작은 물고기들이 모이고, 중간에는 중간치 물고기들, 물이 깊은 안쪽에는 아주 큰 물고기가 열을 지어 나란히 섰기 때문에 정말 평온하고 질서정연하였다.

물고기들이 차례차례 열을 지어서 그처럼 다 모이자 성 안토니오는 다음과 같이 설교를 시작하였다. “내 형제 물고기들이여, 여러분의 능력에 따라 창조주 하느님께 감사드려야 마땅합니다. 주께서는 여러분에게 이같이 고귀한 생활터전을 주셨고, 단물과 짠물을 마음대로 취할 수 있게 하셨으며, 또한 여러분에게 피난처와 맑고 환히 비치는 놀이터와 여러분이 살아나갈 먹이를 주셨습니다. 어지시고 자비하신 창조주 하느님께서는 여러분을 창조하셨을 때, 여러분이 생육하고 번식하도록 명하셨고 또 축복하셨습니다. 노아의 홍수 때 다른 생물들이 모두 멸망하는데도 여러분만은 아무해도 받지 않게 하셨습니다. 그뿐 아니라 그분께서는 여러분이 원하는 곳으로 자유로이 헤엄쳐 다니도록 지느러미를 주신 것입니다. 여러분은 하느님의 명을 받들어 예언자 요나를 잘 붙잡아 두었다가 사흘 만에 공기 좋고 안전한 육지로 올려줄 수 있었고, 또 가난하여 세금을 낼 것이 없으시던 우리 주 예수께 은화를 갖다드렸습니다. 여러분은 특별한 신비로 주님의 부활 날 전후에 영원한 왕 예수 그리스도의 음식이 되어드렸습니다. 이제 들은 바와 같이 여러분은 하느님을 높이 찬양하고 우러러야 마땅합니다. 그분께서는 여러분에게 다른 피조물보다도 훨씬 더 많은 은혜를 베풀어 주셨습니다.”

성 안토니오의 설교가 끝나자 고기들은 입을 벌리고 머리를 끄덕이며 존경의 뜻을 표하고 그들이 할 수 있는 방법으로 하느님을 찬미하는 것이었다.

성 안토니오는 물고기들이 저희들의 하느님께 경외심을 표시하는 것을 보고 마음속 깊이 흐뭇하여 소리높이 외쳤다. “영원하신 하느님은 찬미받으소서! 물고기들이 이단의 무리보다 주를 더 공경하고 이성 없는 동물들이 신앙 없는 인간보다 주의 말씀에 더 잘 귀를 기울이기 때문입니다.” 성 안토니오의 설교가 계속될수록 물고기의 수는 더욱 많아졌고 한 마리도 제 자리를 뜨지 않았다.

이 기적을 보려고 시민들은 앞을 다투어 달려왔고, 그중에는 완고하던 이단자들도 섞여 있었다. 그들은 놀랍고도 분명한 이 기적을 보고 뉘우치는 마음으로 성 안토니오 발 아래 엎드려 그의 이야기를 들으려 하였다.

성 안토니오는 가톨릭 신앙에 대하여 너무도 훌륭히 설교하였으므로 이단자들은 모두 회개하여 그리스도의 참 신앙으로 돌아왔다. 신자들도 환희에 벅차서 정신을 다시 차리고 신앙을 더욱굳게 하였다. 성 안토니오가 하느님의 축복을 내려 물고기들을 흩어지게 하니 고기들은 신묘한 기쁨을 나타내며 사라져 갔다.

성 안토니오는 며칠간을 리미니에 더 머물러 설교로써 커다란 영적 추수를 거두었다.

40. How St. Anthony Converted the Heretics by Preaching to the Fishes

Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, wishing to show how holy was His most faithful servant St. Anthony and how devoutly people should listen to his preaching and wholesome teaching, at one time among others rebuked the foolishness of the infidels and the ignorant and the heretics by means of irrational animals-fishes-just as in ancient times in the Old Testament He rebuked the ignorance of Balaam by the mouth of an ass.

For once when St. Anthony was in Rimini, where there was a great number of heretics, wishing to lead them back to the light of the true faith and onto the path of truth, he preached to them for many days and argued about the faith of Christ and about Holy Scripture. But they were stubborn and hardhearted, and not only did they not accept his holy teaching but, moreover, they refused to listen to him.

So one day, by an inspiration from God, St. Anthony went to the mouth of the river near the sea. And standing on the bank between the sea and the river, he began to call the fishes in God's name, as for a sermon, saying: "You fishes of the sea and river, listen to the word of God, since the faithless heretics refuse to hear it!"

And as soon as he said that, all of a sudden such a great throng of large and small fishes gathered before him near the bank as had never been seen in that sea or river. And all of them held their heads a bit out of the water, gazing intently at St. Anthony's face. There you would have seen the big fishes staying close to the little ones, while the smaller ones peacefully swam or stayed under the fins of the larger fishes. you would also have seen the different types of fishes hasten to group themselves together and range themselves before the Saint's face like a field painted and adorned with a marvelous variety of colors. You would have seen schools of big fishes occupy the distant places in order to hear the sermon, like an army ranged for battle. You would have seen the middle-sized fishes take their positions in the center and stay in their places without any disturbance, as though they were instructed by God. And you would have seen a great and very dense crowd of small fishes come in a hurry, like pilgrims going to receive an indulgence, and approach closer to the holy Father as to their protector. And so first the smaller fishes near the bank, secondly the middle-sized, and thirdly the largest fishes, where the water was deeper, attended this divinely arranged sermon of St. Anthony-all in very great peace and meekness and order.

Then when all the fishes were in their places in perfect order, St. Anthony solemnly began to preach, saying: "My fish brothers, you should give as many thanks as you can to your Creator who has granted you such a noble element as your dwelling place, so that you have fresh and salt water, just as you please. Moreover He has given you a clear and transparent element and ways to travel and food to live on. Your kind Creator also prepares for you the food that you need even in the depths of the ocean. When He created you at the creation fo the world, He gave you His blessing. Later during the Flood, when all the other animals were perishing, God preserved you alone without loss. He has also given you fins so that with that additional power you can roam wherever you wish. It was granted to you, by order of God, to keep alive Jonas, the Prophet of the Lord, and to cast him onto dry land safe and sound on the third day. You offered the tribute money to Our Lord Jesus Christ, when as a poor man He had nothing to pay the tax. You were chosen as food for the Eternal King, Our blessed Lord Jesus Christ, before His Resurrection and in a mysterious way afterwards. Because of all theses things you should praise and bless the Lord, who has given you so many more blessings than to other creatures."

At these and similar words and preaching of St. Anthony, some of the fishes began to open their mouths, and all of them nodded their heads, and by these and other signs of reverence they praised God as much as they could.

Then St. Anthony, seeing how reverent the fishes were toward God the Creator, rejoiced in spirit and cried out in a loud voice: "Blessed be the Eternal God because the fishes of the waters give God more honor than heretical men, and animals lacking reason listen to His word better than faithless men!"

And the longer St. Anthony preached, the more the throng of fishes increased, and not one of them left the place which it had taken.

At this miracle the people of the city, including the abovementioned heretics, came running. And when they saw the marvelous and extraordinary miracle of the fishes listening to St. Anthony, all of them felt remorse in their hearts, and they sat down at his feet so that he should preach a sermon to them.

Then St. Anthony preached so wonderfully about the Catholic religion that he converted and brought back to the true faith of Christ all those heretics who were there, and the faithful he sent home with his blessing, strengthened in their faith and filled with joy.

St. Anthony also dismissed the fishes with God's blessing, and they all swam away to various parts of the sea, rejoicing and expressing their joy and applause in amazing games and gambols.

After this, St. Anthony stayed in Rimini for many days, preaching and reaping much spiritual fruit, both by converting heretics and by stimulating the piety of the clergy.

To the glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ who is blessed forever and ever. Amen.
