제 42장 하느님께서 몇몇 거룩한 형제들에게 기적을 행하신 이야기

옛날 안코나의 마르카 지방은 하늘의 총총한 별들처럼 거룩하고 모범적인 형제들로써 장식되어 있었고, 이 형제들은 빛나는 별과 같이 성 프란치스코의 형제회와 세상을 모범과 교훈으로 찬란히 비추고 꾸미었다.

그중에서 우선 성덕으로 빛나고 천상적 사랑으로 불탔던 루치도 형제가 있었는데, 그의 웅변은 성령의 감도하심을 힘입어 설교 때마다 놀라운 성과를 거두었다.

또 다른 사람은 산 세베리노의 벤띠볼랴 형제로서, 이 형제가 숲속에서 기도하고 있은 때에 공중에 높이 들어올려진 것을 맛세오 형제가 보았다. 이 맛세오 형제는 그 당시 교구 신부였으나, 이 기적 때문에 교구 신부직을 사임하고 작은 형제가 되었다. 그는 성덕이 매우 뛰어나서 생존시와 사후에도 많은 기적을 행하였고 그의 유해는 현재 무로에 안치되어 있다.

이 벤띠볼랴 형제가 한번은 드라베 보난티에 혼자 머무르면서 어떤 문둥병자를 간호해 주고 있었다. 그런데 장상으로부터 거기를 떠나 15마일 떨어져 있는 수도원으로 가라는 명을 받았다. 그는 그 병자를 차마 버려두고 가고 싶지 않아 사랑에 불타는 마음으로 그를 등에 업고 15마일 떨어진 몬테 산치노라고 하는 자기가 파견된 수도원까지 줄곧 업은 채로 걸어갔다. 비록 독수리라 하더라도 그렇게 짧은 시간에 그 먼길을 날아갈 수는 없었으리라. 이 거룩한 기적으로 말미암아 그 지방 전체에는 놀람과 감탄의 소리가 넘쳤다.

다음은 몬티첼로의 베드로 형제의 이야기이다. 그 무렵 안코나의 옛 수도원 원장으로 있던 우리바노의 세르보디오 형제는 성당의 십자 고상 앞에서 기도하고 있던 베드로 형제가 그 십자가의 발 밑까지 대여섯 길이나 몸이 떠올라 있는 것을 보았다.

한번은 이 베드로 형제가 40일간의 미카엘 단식재를 지키고 있는 그 마지막날 성당에서 기도하고 있는데 한 형제가 이 형제의 성덕을 좀 엿보려고 일부러 대제대 밑에 숨어 있다가 그가 성 마카엘 대천사와 서로 이야기하는 것을 들었다. 이야기는 이러했다. 성 미카엘이 “베드로 형제, 너는 나를 위해 몸이 지치도록 충실히 수고했고, 네 몸을 여러 가지로 괴롭혔다. 그래서 오늘 너를 위로해 주려고 왔다. 어떤 소원이라도 말하렴, 네가 원하는 대로 나는 하느님으로부터 얻어 줄 것을 약속하마"하고 말하니 베드로 형제는 대답하기를 ”가장 거룩한 천상 군대의 으뜸이시며 하느님의 영광을 위한 충성스런 열성가이시며 영혼들의 인자하신 수호자여, 저는 당신께 드릴 청이 하나 있습니다. 제 죄를 용서받을 수 있는 은총을 하느님께로부터 얻어주시기 바랍니다“하였다.

성 미카엘은 그것을 얻어주는 것은 쉬운 일이니 다른 소원을 말해보라고 하였으나 베드로 형제는 다른 것을 아무것도 원하지 않았으므로 대천사는 끝으로 말하였다. “내게 대하여 보여준 믿음과 열성을 보아 네가 원하는 은총 이외에도 다른 은총을 많이 얻게 해주리라.” 오래 계속된 대화가 끝나자 성 미카엘 대천사는 큰 위로를 남기면서 떠나갔다.

이 거룩한 형제 베드로와 같은 시대에 오피다의 콘라도 형제가 살고 있었다. 안코나 지방 포라노의 수도원에 함께 있을 때 콘라도 형제는 어느날 하느님께 대해 묵상하려고 숲으로 갔다. 베드로 형제는 그에게 무슨 일이 일어나나 보려고 몰래 그 뒤를 밟았다.

콘라도 형제는 기도에 전념하였고 아주 경건하게 눈물을 많이 흘리며 동정 성모 마리아께 간구하기를, 성 시메온이 취결례 축일에 축복받은 구세주 예수 그리스도를 자기 품에 안았을 적에 느낀 것과 같은 기쁨을 자기에게도 조금 맛보게 해달라고 하였다.

그가 기도를 끝내니 자비로우신 동정 마리아께서 이 소원을 들어주셨다. 하늘의 모후께서는 성자 예수 아기를 팔에 안으시고 눈부신 광채에 싸여 발현하셔서 콘라도 형제에게로 가까이 서고는 복되신 성자를 그 팔에 안겨주셨다.

콘라도 형제는 지극히 경건한 태도로 성자를 받아 안아 입맞추고 가슴에 껴안았다. 그런데 갑자기 그 형제는 하느님의 사랑과 형언할 수 없는 위안 속에 녹아 용해되어 버렸다. 그와 동시에 숨어서 전부 지켜보던 베드로 형제도 자기 영혼 속에 커다란 감미로움과 위로를 느꼈다. 동정 성모 마리아가 콘라도 형제를 떠나 가셨을 때 베드로 형제는 콘라도 형제의 눈에 띄지 않게 급히 수도원으로 먼저 돌아왔다.

얼마 후에 콘라도 형제가 아주 즐거운 듯 희색이 만연하여, 들어서는 것을 본 베드로 형제는 “천사 같은 형제여, 오는 지극히 큰 위안을 받으셨군요”하고 말하니. “베드로 형제여, 그게 무슨 말이요? 무엇을 안다고 그러시오?” 하고 그는 시치밀 떼었다.

베드로 형제는 “알고 있고 말고요, 동정 성모님이 성자와 함께 형제르 찾아오신 일을 잘 알고 있습니다”그랬더니, 참으로 겸손한 콘라도는 그 은혜를 비밀로 해두기를 당부하며 아무에게도 말하지 말라고 신신 부탁하였다. 그런 뒤로 이 두 사람 사이의 사랑은 매우 깊어졌고 그들은 모든 일에 한마음 한뜻이 되는 것 같았다.

이 콘라도 형제가 한번은 시롤로 수도원에서 밤새도록 기도해서 마귀에 들린 한 부인을 구해내어 그 모친에게 보여준 일도 있다. 이 일로 해서 그 이틑날 아침 사람들이 모여와 자기를 찬양할 것을 두려워하여, 다른 곳으로 피하였다.

42. About the Wonderful Miracles That God Performed through Some Holy Friars

In former times the Province of the Marches of Ancona was adorned and bright like the sky with brilliant stars that were the holy and exemplary Friars Minor who shone like stars above and below-before God and their neighbor-with radiant virtues, and who illumined the Order of St. Francis and the world by their example and teaching. Their memory is truly a blessing from God.

Among them some were like greater constellations that shone more brightly than others: for instance, first of all, Brother Lucido the Elder, who was indeed resplendent with sanctity and aflame with the love of God, and whose glorious preaching was inspired by the Holy Spirit and reaped marvelous fruit.

Another was Brother Bentivoglia of San Severino, who was seen by Brother Mass대 of San Severino raised up into the air at a great height while he was praying in the woods.

As a result of that miracle this Brother Masseo, who was then a pastor, left his pastorate and became a Friar Minor, and he lived such a saintly life that he performed many miracles before and after his death. His body rests in Murro.

The above-mentioned Brother Bentivoglia, when he was once staying alone at Trave Bonanti nursing and taking care of a man suffering from leprosy, received an obedience from his superior to leave there and go to another Place which was fifteen miles away. Not wishing to abandon the sick man, with great fervor of charity he took him up and set him on his own shoulders. And burdened that way he carried him from early dawn until sunrise all that distance of fifteen miles, from the Place of Trave to the Place where he was sent, which was called Monte Sanvicino. If he had been an eagle, he could hardly have flown that distance in such a short time. Everyone in that region who heard about this divine miracle was filled with amazement and admiration.

Another friar was Peter of Montecchio, a real saint, who was seen by Brother Servodeo of Urbino (at that time his guardian in the old Place of Ancona) raised in the air about five or six cubits above the ground, that is, the pavement of the church, up to the feet of the Crucifix before which he was praying.

This Brother Peter, once while he was keeping the Lent of St. Michael with great devotion, on the last day of that Lent was praying in church, and he was heard talking with the most holy Archangel Michael and the Archangel talking with him, by a young friar who had carefully hidden under the high altar in order to observe him. And this is what they were saying.

The Archangel St. Michael said: "Brother Peter, you have labored faithfully for me, and you have afflicted your body in many ways. Now I have come to console you. So ask whatever grace you desire-and I will obtain it for you from the Lord."

Brother Peter answered: "Most holy prince of the heavenly army and most faithful defender of God's honor and most compassionate protector of souls, I ask you for this grace: that you obtain for me from God the forgiveness of all my sins."

The Archangel Michael replied: "Ask for another grace, because I will easily obtain that one for you."

But as Brother Peter did not ask for anything else, the Archangel concluded, saying: "Because of the faith and devotion which you have for me, I will obtain for you that grace which you request and many others."

When their conversation was over-and it lasted a great part of the night-the Archangel St. Michael went away and left Brother Peter intensely consoled.

Brother Conrad of Offida was living in the days of that holy Brother Peter. When they were members of the community at the Place of Forano in the Custody of Ancona, one day Brother Conrad went into the woods to contemplate God, and Brother Peter secretly went after him in order to see what happened.

Now Brother Conrad began to pray very devoutly and with many tears to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she might obtain for him from her Son this grace: that he might be allowed to feel a little of that sweetness which St. Simeon felt on the day of her Purification when he held in his arms the Blessed Savior Jesus.

He earned the granting of his prayer by the most merciful Lady. For the glorious Queen of Heaven appeared with that Blessed little Son of hers in her arms in such dazzling splendor that it not only drove away the shadows but also outshone all lights. And approaching the holy Brother Conrad, she put in his arms that Blessed little Son who is more beautiful than the sons of men.

Brother Conrad took him with very great devotion and pressed his lips to His and clasped Him to his heart. And in these loving embraces and kisses he felt as though his soul were melting away with ineffable consolation.

Now Brother Peter was watching all this in the bright light, and he too felt a great sweetness in his soul. And he remained hidden in the woods. But when the Blessed Virgin Mary and her Son left Brother Conrad, Brother Peter hurried back to the Place, so as not to be seen by him.

Later when Brother Conrad returned, overflowing with joy and happiness, Brother Peter called him and said: "Oh, you heavenly man, you have had a great consolation today!"

Brother Conrad said: "What do you mean, Brother Peter? What do you know about what I have had?"

Brother Peter said: "I know very well-I know very well, you heavenly man, how the Blessed Virgin Mary visited you with her Blessed little Son."

When Brother Conrad heard that, he asked Brother Peter not to tell it to anyone, because as a truly humble man he wanted to keep secret the graces which God gave him. And after this the love between the two of them was so great that they seemed to have on heart and one soul in all things.

Once in the Place of Sirolo this Brother Conrad by his prayers freed a women who was obsessed by the devil. And in the morning he immediately fled from that Place so that the mother of the liberated girl should not find him and he should not be acclaimed by a crowd of people. For Brother Conrad had prayed for her all that night, and he had appeared in a vision to her mother while he was liberation her.

To the praise and glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
