제46장 기도중에 파치피코 형제가 우밀레 형제의 영혼이

 

제46장 기도중에 파치피코 형제가 우밀레 형제의 영혼이 천국으로 올라가는 것을 본 이야기

성 프란치스코의 별세 후 마르카 관구 형제회에 두 사람이 입회하였는데 그들은 친형제간이었다. 하나는 우밀레 형제였고 다른 하나는 파치피코 형제로서 성덕이 매우 뛰어난 이들이었다. 둘중에 하나, 즉 우밀레 형제는 소피아노 수도원에서 살다가 그곳에서 세상을 떠났고 파치피코 형제는 아주 멀리 떨어진 다른 수도원에 있었다.

파치피코 형제가 어느날 하느님의 섭리로 조용한 곳에서 기도하고 있을 때 홀연 탈혼이 되어 자기 형 우밀레의 영혼이 아무런 장애도 받지 않고 육신을 떠나 곧장 천국으로 올라가는 것을 보았다. 그 후 몇해가 지나 이 세상에 살아남은 파치피코는 자기 형이 죽은 소피아노 수도원으로 가게 되었고 형제들은 부르포르떼 영주들의 청원에 따라 다른 수도원으로 옮겨갔다. 형제들은 수도원에서 죽은 거룩한 형제들의 유골도 함께 모셔가게 되었다. 여러 형제들이 이미 죽은 우밀레 형제의 무덤에 가보니 그 육신의 형제인 파치피코 형제가 그의 뼈를 주워 고급 포도주로 씻고 흰 보자기에 싸가지고는 아주 정성껏 경건하게 입 맞추며 울고 있었다.

이것을 본 형제들은 매우 놀라 좋지 못한 표양이라고 생각했다. 그는 비록 성덕이 뛰어난 사람이지만 육신의 정과 세속적인 애정에 얽매여 그토록 슬퍼하는 것처럼 보였고, 또 우밀레 형제보다 성덕이 조금도 뒤지지 않았던 다른 거룩한 형제들의 유골보다도 제 친형제의 유골에 더 큰 존경을 표했기 때문이었다.

다른 형제들의 그런 오해를 눈치챈 피치피코 형제는 겸손되이 그들을 향해 말하기를 “사랑하는 형제 여러분, 제가 제 육신 형님의 유골을 특별히 취급한다고 이상하게 여기지 말아주십시오. 제가 그렇게 한 것은 여러분이 생각하는 것처럼 같은 피를 나눈 형제이기 때문이 절대 아니오. 이 모든 것을 다 알고 계시는 하느님은 찬미받으소서. 제 형님이 이 세상을 떠날 때 저는 마침 멀리 떨어진 조용한 곳에서 기도를 드리고 있었는데 그의 영혼이 곧 바로 천국으로 올라가는 것을 보았기에 특별한 경의를 표하는 것 뿐입니다. 그러므로 그의 유골은 거룩하고 그는 마땅히 천국에 들어가 있어야 한다고 굳게 믿고 있습니다. 만약 하느님께서 저에게 다른 형제들에게 대해서도 그와같은 확실한 증거를 보여주신다면 저는 또한 마땅히 그들의 유골에도 똑같이 존경을 드릴 것입니다” 하였다.

이 말을 들은 형제들은 그의 경건하고 거룩한 생각을 깨닫고 크게 감화되었을 뿐 아니라, 하느님께서 당신의 거룩한 형제들에게 베푸시는 놀라운 일을 찬양하였다.

46. How Brother Pacifico Saw the Soul of His Brother Going to Heaven

In that Province of the Marches after the death of our Father St. Francis there were two brothers in the Order, Brother Humble and Brother Pacifice, both of whom were men of great sanctity and perfection.

One of them, Brother Humble, lived in the Place of Soffiano and died there. But the other was a member of a community in a Place at some distance from him. And as it pleased God, when Brother Pacifico was staying in that distant Place, one day while he was praying in a solitary and lonely spot, the hand of the Lord came over him. And being rapt in ecstasy, he saw the soul of his brother, Brother Humble, ascend directly up to Heaven without any delay or hindrance.

Many years later it happened that the brother who lived on was made a member of the community at that Place of Soffiano where his brother had died and was buried. Now at that time, at the request of the Lords of Brunforte, the friars gave up the Place of Soffiano for another, so that they transferred the remains of the holy friars who had been buried there. And when they came to the grave of Brother Humble among the others, his brother, Brother Pacifice, took up the bones very devoutly and washed them with excellent wine and then wrapped them in a white napkin, weeping over them and kissing them very reverently.

But the other friars who were present were surprised and shocked at this, because while he had a reputation for great holiness, it seemed to them that he was grieving for his brother out of a natural and worldly affection, and that he was showing greater devotion to those remains than to those of the other friars who had been no less saintly than Brother Humble and were worthy of the same honor as he.

Knowing that the friars were misjudging him, Brother Pacifico humbly explained to them: "My dear Brothers, do not be surprised because I have done something that I did not do to the others, for-blessed be God-it was not a natural affection that motivated me, as you thought. But I acted that way because, when my brother left this world and went to the Lord, I was praying in a solitary place far away from him and I saw his soul ascending straight up to Heaven. So I am certain that these bones of his are holy and are destined to rest some day in God's Paradise. That is why I am doing what you see. And if God had granted me such certainty regarding the other friars, I would have shown the same reverence for their bones."

Consequently, perceiving his good and holy motive, the friars were greatly edified. And they praised God who performs such great wonders for His holy friars.
