제51장 팔테로네의 야고보 형제 이야기와 이 형제가 죽은 후 라베르나의 요한 형제에게 나타난 일

위대한 성덕을 지닌 팔테로네의 야고보 형제가 페르코 속관구 몰리아노 수도원에서 중병으로 누워 있을 때다. 그 당신 맛사의 수도원에 머물고 있던 라베르나의 요한 형제는 이 소식을 듣고 자기 아버지처럼 사랑하던 야고보 형제를 위하여, 기도로써 “만일 야고보 형제의 영혼에 그것이 좋다면 육신의 건강을 회복시켜달라”고 간청했다.

이렇게 경건히 기도하고 있을 때 탈혼되어 숲속에 있던 자기 방 바로 위 하늘에 무수한 천사와 성인의 큰 무리가 나타나 눈부신 광채로 그 지방 일대를 환히 밝히고 있는 것을 보았다. 그런데 그 천사와 성인들 속에는 지금까지 기도해 주고 있던 병든 야고보 형제가 찬란한 빛을 내며 흰 옷을 입고 있는 것이 보였다. 복되신 사부 성 프란치스코는 그리스도의 오상으로 장식되어 영광의 불꽃을 발산하고 있었고, 거룩한 형제와 몬테 룹비아노의 옛날 마태오 형제와 그밖에 이 세상에서 본 일이 없는 여러 형제들이 거기에 많이 있었다.

요한 형제가 큰 기쁨 속에 그 복된 성인들을 바라보고 있는 동안 저 병든 야고보 형제는 확실히 구워을 받지만 이번 병으로 죽게 될 것이며, 또 죽는다 하더라도 잠시 동안 연옥에서 정화되어야 하기 때문에 천국에는 바로 못 들어가게 되리라는 계시를 받았다.

이 계시로 그 영혼이 구원된다는 데 크게 기뻐 조금도 슬퍼하지 않고 벅찬 영적인 환희 가운데 마음속으로 야고보 형제의 이름을 부르며, “야고보 형제, 하느님의 가장 충성된 종이며 친구인 야고보 형제! 천사들의 벗이며, 천국의 시민이여!” 하고 소리쳤다.

요한 형제는 이러한 확신과 기쁨 속에서 다시 제 정신으로 돌아오자, 곧 수도원을 떠나 그 형제를 문병하려고 몰리아노로 갔다. 그는 야고보 형제가 말도 못할 지경으로 악화된 것을 보고 하느님의 계시로 알게 된 것과 같이 육신은 죽으나 영혼은 틀림없이 구원되고 영광스럽게 된다는 것을 말해주었다.

이 말을 들은 야고보 형제는 큰 기쁨과 즐거운 낯으로 그를 맞이하면서 좋은 소식을 가지고 온 데 대하여 감사하며 잘 기도해 달라고 당부하였다. 요한 형제는 야고보 형제가 죽은 후 자기에게 다시 와서 어떻게 되었는지 좀 알려달라고 애원하였더니 야고보 형제는 만일 하느님께서 허락해 주신다면 그렇겠다고 약속했다. 이런 말을 한 다음 임종의 시간이 닥쳐왔으므로 야고보 형제는 “나 영원한 생명에 들어가 편안히 누워 쉬리라”라는 시편 구절을 읊고 희열에 가득찬 얼굴로 이 세상을 떠났다.

요한 형제는 맛사 수도원으로 돌아와 야고보 형제가 약속한 날에 그 약속이 이루어지기를 기다리고 있었다. 바로 그날 요한 형제가 기도하고 있으려니까 그리스도께서 천사들과 성인들 여러명을 거느리고 나타나셨지만 야고보 형제는 그중에 없었다. 요한 형제는 깜짝 놀라 그 형제를 공손히 그리스도께 의탁해 버렸다.

그 다음날 요한 형제가 숲에서 기도에 잠겨 있으려니까 천신들의 안내로 야고보 형제가 나타났는데 모두들 영광스럽고 즐거웠다. 요한 형제는 “아버지여, 왜 약속하신 대로 어제 오시지 않았습니까?”하고 물었더니 그는 이와같이 대답하였다. “나는 연옥에서 좀 정화되어야 했기 때문에 그랬소, 그러나 그리스도께서 형제에게 발현하시자 형제가 나의 일을 주께 부탁드려 줄 때 그리스도께서는 그 기도를 들어주시어 나를 모든 고통에서 구해주셨소, 또 그때 나는 저 거룩한 평수사인 맛사의 야고보 형제에게 발현하였는데, 때마침 그 형제는 미사 복사를 하고 있었고 거룩한 성체를 사제가 들어올릴 때 성체가 살아 있는 아주 예쁜 어린이로 변하는 것을 보았소. 나는 그 형제에게 ‘오늘 나는 이 어린이와 함께 영원한 생명의 나라로 갑니다. 그 나라에 이 어린이 없이는 아무도 갈 수 없습니다.’하고 일러주었소.” 이 말을 마치고 야고보 형제는 같이 온 복된 천사들과 더불어 천국으로 돌아갔다.

요한 형제는 큰 위안에 가득차 있었다. 이 팔테로네의 야고보 형제는 7월 성 야고보 축일 첫날 밤에(7월 25일) 몰리아노 수도원에서 세상을 떠났고 그가 죽은 후 그 형제의 공로로 말미암아 하느님께서는 그곳에서 많은 기적을 행하셨다.

51. How Brother James of Falerone Appeared After He Died to Brother John of Alverna

At the time when Brother James of Falerone, a man of great sanctity, was seriously ill in the Place of Mogliano in the Custody of Fermo, Brother John of Alverna, who was then staying in the Place of Massa, on hearing about his illness, began to pray fervently to God for him in mental prayer, with the heartfelt desire that Brother James might recover his health if it were good for his soul, because Brother John loved him as if he were his own father.

And while he was thus praying devoutly, he was rapt in an ecstasy and saw in the air a great throng of many angels and saints above his cell which was in the woods. And they shone with such brightness that they illuminated the whole countryside.

And among those angels he saw that sick Brother James for whom he was praying, standing there radiant with light and dressed in white clothes. He saw among them our blessed Father Francis adorned with the holy Stigmata of Christ and resplendent in great glory. He also saw and recognized the saintly Brother Lucido and Brother Matthew the Elder of Monte Rubbiano and many other friars whom he had never seen or known in this life, with many saints, and all of them were radiant with similar glory and brightness.

And while Brother John was gazing with great delight at that blessed throng of saints, it was revealed to him that the soul of the sick friar would certainly be saved and that he was destined to die from that illness, but that he would not go to Heaven immediately after dying because he had to be purified in Purgatory for a short while.

Now on seeing this, Brother John rejoiced so much over the salvation and glory of that friar that he did not grieve over the death of his body, but with great spiritual consolation he frequently called him, saying within himself: "Brother James, my dear Brother James, faithful servant of Christ and friend of God-Brother James, my beloved Father-Brother James, companion of the angels and of the saints!"

And so being sure of the death of Brother James and rejoicing over the salvation of his soul, he came back to himself and set out at once from the Place of Massa, where he had had this vision.

And he went to visit Brother James at Mogliano, where he found him so weak from his illness that he could hardly speak. And Brother John announced to him that he was going to die but that his soul would be saved and go in joy to the glory of eternal life, according to the certainty which he had been given by divine revelation.

Brother James, being assured of his salvation, was utterly filled with joy both in mind and countenance, and a happy ｅxpression on his features, thanking him for the joyful news he brought. And because Brother James loved him like a son, he commended himself fervently to Brother John, telling him that his soul was about to leave his body.

Then Brother John eagerly asked him to agree to come back to him after dying and tell him how he was-which Brother James promised to do if it pleased the Savior to allow him.

And after he had said that, as the moment of his death was approaching, Brother James began to recite with devotion these words of the psalm: “Oh, in peace-Oh, in Him- Oh, I will sleep- Oh, I will rest!" And after saying that verse, with a joyful and happy ｅxpression on his face, he left this life and went to the Lord Jesus Christ.

And after he had been buried, Brother John went back to the Place of Massa and waited for Brother James to carry out his promise to return to him on the day when he said he would. And while on that day he was waiting and praying, Christ appeared to him in a bright light with a great throng of angels and saints, but Brother James was not among them. So Brother John in great surprise fervently commended him to Christ

Later, on the next day, while Brother John was praying in the forest of Massa, Brother James appeared to him, all in glory and joy, accompanied by angels.

And Brother John said to him: "Oh, holy Father, why did you not return and speak to me on the day you promised?"

Brother James answered: "Because I needed a little purifying. But at that same hour when Christ appeared to you, I appeared to the holy lay brother James of Massa while he was serving Mass-and he also saw the Host at the Elevation changed into an indescribably beautiful living Boy. And I spoke to that Brother and said: "Today I am going to the Kingdom of God with that Boy, for no one can go there except through Him!' And at the same moment when you commended me to Christ, your prayer was heard and I was liberated."

And after saying that he went to the Lord. And Brother John was greatly consoled. Now Brother James of Falerone died on the Vigil of St. James the Apostle in July, and was buried in the Place of Mogliano, where he performs many miracles.
