제 53장 라베르나의 요한 형제가 미사중에 죽은 사람처럼 넘어진 일

라베르나의 요한 형제에 대한 또 다른 이야기다. 실제로 본 형제들의 말에 따르면, 몰리아노 수도원에서 다음과 같은 놀라운 일이 한번 일어났다.

성 로렌죠 8부축일이 끝난 첫날 밤이자, 성모 몽소승천 주간이던 때(8월 17, 18일경) 그는 다른 형제들과 함께 밤기도를 드리고 있었는데 갑자기 은총이 주는 하느님의 평화에 감싸였다. 그 형제는 정원으로 나가 그리스도의 수난을 묵상하고 정성껏 미사드릴 준비를 하면서 그날 아침에 외울 경문을 검토해 보았다. 그리스도의 몸을 축성하는 “이는 내 몸이니라”라는 말씀과 그리스도께서 고귀하신 피로써 우리를 구속하셨을 뿐 아니라, 그 살과 피를 우리 영혼의 양식으로 주시는 무한한 사랑을 더 묵상하자, 감미로운 예수님의 사랑이 그의 마음에 점점 커져 아주 뜨겁고도 온화하게 되어 그렇게 큰 감미로움을 영혼이 더 이상 견디지 못하고 다만 성령에 취한 사람 모양 “이는 내 몸이니라”하고 쉬지 않고 되풀이하였다.

이같이 그 말씀을 뇌고 있는 동안에 요한 형제는 복되신 그리스도께서 동정 마리아와 무수한 천사들과 함께 계시는 것이 보이는 것 같았다. 더구나 성령께서는 이 말씀으로 지극히 높은 성사의 높고 깊은 신비를 모두 밝혀주셨다.

날이 새자 그는 이 열정과 들뜬 마음에서 지기를 보는 사람도 없고 아무도 안들었겠지 하는 생각으로 “이는 내 몸이니라”를 중얼거리면서 성당에 들어갔다. 그런데 실상은 성가대석에서 기도하던 한 형제가 모든 것을 다 보고 들었던 것이다. 요한 형제는 이 열정 속에서 넘치는 하느님의 은총을 억누르지 못하여 큰소리로 외쳤다. 이런 모양으로 오래동안 미사시간이 올 때까지 있었다.

미사시간이 되어 그는 제의를 입고 제단으로 갔다. 미사를 시작하자 갈수록 자기 안에 그리스도의 사랑과 이 경건한 열정이 점점 더 커지고 또한 형언할 수 없는 하느님께 대한 신심의 감격이 한꺼번에 몰려와서 이것을 자기자신을 즉시 말로 표현할 수가 없었다. 하느님께 향한 이 열정과 감격이 너무나 커져 미사가 중단되지나 않을까 두려웠으므로 미사를 중지해야 좋을지 계속해야 좋을지, 또는 기다려야 할지 알지 못해 어찌할 바를 몰라 애를 태웠다. 그에게는 과거에도 그런 일이 있었지만 주께서 미사를 중단하지 않아도 좋을 정도로 그 열정을 가라앉혀 주셨으므로 이번에도 그러려니 생각하고 몹시 두려워하면서 그대로 미사를 계속했다.

성모 감사서문경까지 이르니 그때 하느님의 비추심과 하느님 사랑의 은혜로운 감미로움이 점점 더 강해져, 성체축성 첫마디까지 외우자, 감미로움과 단맛은 정말 견디기 어려웠다. 드디어 성체 빵을 향하여 축성과 축성의 말씀을 할 때가 되어 이미 그 반, 즉 “이는 내”까지 외우니 아무리 해도 그 뒤를 계속할 수가 없게 되었다. 다만 “이는 내”라는 말만 반복하고 있었다. 그 뒷말을 계속할 수 없었던 이유는 바로 그리스도께서 수많은 천사들과 함께 계신 것을 느끼고 보고 또 그 위엄에 눌리었기 때문이다. 요한 형제는 자기가 먼저 그 말씀의 나머지 부분, “몸이니라”를 마저 외우지 않으면 그리스도께서 성체의 빵에 들어오시지 않거나 성체의 빵이 그리스도의 성체로 실제 변화를 하지 않음을 보았으므로 요한 형제는 이렇게 황공하여 어쩔 줄 모르고 기도문을 중단하고 있었다.

수도원장과 다른 형제들 그리고 미사참례 하러 성당에 모인 많은 일번 교우들이 제단을 향하여 몰려왔다. 그들은 요한 형제의 거동을 보자 공포에 사로잡혀 가만히 보고 있었다. 그들 중에는 경건한 감동을 받고 우는 자도 여럿이 있었다.

시간이 꽤 흘러 하느님께서 원하는 때가 되자, 요한 형제는 높은 소리로 “몸이니라” 끝 구절을 읽었다. 그러자 갑자기 성체 빵의 형상이 사라지고 복되신 예수 그리스도께서 사람이 되시어 영광스러이 발현하심으로써 그분 자신이 마리아 몸에서 육신으로 되셨고 또 매일 사제가 성체의 빵을 축성할 때마다 당신 자신을 사제의 손에 내려오시게 하는 겸손과 사랑을 증명해 보이셨다. 이로써 요한 형제는 더욱더 묵상의 단맛을 북돋우게 되었다.

성체를 들어올린 다음에 성혈을 축성했을 때, 그는 제 정신을 잃고 탈혼하여 그 영혼의 육체적 감각이 정지되고 그의 몸은 뒤로 넘어졌다. 만일 그의 뒤에 서 있던 수도원장이 그를 부축해 주지 않았으면 땅에 졸도하고 말았을 것이다. 성당 안에 있던 형제들과 남녀 일반 교우들은 너 나 할것없이 모두 뛰어와서 그가 죽은 줄로 알고, 제의방으로 운반해갔다. 그의 몸이 죽은 사람처럼 차가와지고 손가락은 몹시 굳어져서 거의 펼 수도 움직일 수도 없게 되었다. 이런 모양으로 요한 형제는 정신을 잃고 탈혼하여 9시 기도까지 누워 있었다. 이것은 여름의 일이었다.

그때 나도 거기에 있었는데 하느님께서 그에게 무슨 일을 행하셨는지 무척 알고 싶어 그가 제 정신으로 돌아오자 나는 즉시 찾아가서 모든 것을 이야기해 달라고 간청하였다. 그는 나를 매우 신뢰하고 있었으므로 그 동안 일어난 모든 것을 상세히 말해주었다. 그중에서 예수 그리스도의 성체와 성혈을 축성하였을 때 벌써 그 마음은 녹은 촛물처럼 되어 마치 자기 살에 뼈가 없는 것 같았고, 손과 팔을 거의 쳐들 수가 없어서, 성체의 빵과 성작 위에 십자성호를 그을 수가 없었다. 더욱이 사제서품을 받기 전에 하느님께로부터 미사중에 졸도할 것이라는 계시를 받았지만 여러번 미사를 드렸는데도 그런 일이 일어나지 않았으므로 이런 계시는 하느님께로부터 나온 것이 아니라고 생각해 왔다고 내게 말해 주었다. 그러던 중 위의 사건이 일어난 성모 몽소승천 축일보다 50일쯤 전에 그는 하느님께로부터 몽소승철 축일경 이런 일이 일어날 것이라는 계시를 또 받았다. 그러나 그 후, 이 형제는 그 계시를 잊고 있었다.

53. How While Saying Mass Brother John Fell Down As If He Were Dead

Something wonderful and worthy of lasting fame happened to that Brother John, as the friars who were present have related.

Once when Brother John was staying in the Place of Mogliano of the Custody of Fermo in the Province of the Marches, during the first night after the Octave of St. Lawrence-within the Octave of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary-he arose before the time for matins. And while the Lord filled his soul with grace, he recited matins with the friars. But after saying matins, he went into the garden, because he felt such sweet consolation from the great graces which he derived from those words of the Lord Hoc est Corpus Meum(This is My Body) that he shouted out loud and repeated in his heart "Hoc est Corpus Meum."

He was enlightened by the Holy Spirit regarding those words, and the eyes of his soul being opened, he saw Jesus Christ with the Blessed Virgin and a throng of angels and saints. And he understood that saying of the Apostle that we are all one body in Christ, and each of us is a member one of another, and that with the saints we may grasp what is the breadth, the length, the sublimity, and the depth, and know the love of Christ that surpasses all knowledge, for it is wholly in this Most Holy Sacrament which is brought into being when the words. Hoc est Corpus Meum are said.

And when dawn came, stirred by divine grace, with those words on his lips, he went into the church in great fervor of spirit. And thinking no one saw or heard him-though a friar was praying in the choir and heard it-he was so troubled by the intensity of the grace that he could not prevent himself from shouting loudly three times.

And he remained in that condition until it was time for the Mass which he was to celebrate. So he went to vest. But when he reached the altar. the grace of fervent devotion increased within him, and the love of Christ also grew in him. And he was given a certain ineffable sense of God's presence which he could not express in words. He was afraid that this feeling and marvelous fervor might increase so much he would have to interrupt the Mass, so that he did not know what to do-whether to proceed or to wait.

However, as he had once had a similar experience, and the Lord had so tempered his emotion that he had not had to interrupt the mass, he hoped that he might proceed this time. Nevertheless he feared what might happen, because such infusions of divine grace cannot be controlled by human beings.

When he had proceeded as far as the Preface of the Blessed Virgin, the supernatural illumination and sweet consolation of Gods's love increased so much within him that when he reached the Qui pridie he could hardly endure such overwhelming sweetness. Finally, when he came to the Consecration itself and began to pronounce the words of the Consecration over the Host, he kept repeating the first half of the formula-Hoc est-Hoc est-very often, and he was unable to go any further. And the reason why he could not go on was that he felt and saw the presence of Christ and of a throng of angels and saints, so that he almost fainted because of their grandeur which he felt in his soul.

Therefore the guardian of the Place anxiously came running to assist him and stood beside him, and a friar stood behind him with a lighted candle, while the other friars were watching in fear with many other men and women, including some of the most prominent persons in the province who were in the church to hear Mass, and all of them stood around the altar, waiting, and many were weeping, as women do.

But Brother John, almost beside himself with sweet bliss and joy, was standing there without finishing the Consecration because he saw that Christ did not enter into the Host or rather that the Host was not changed into the Body of Christ, until he added the other half of the formula, Corpus Meum.

Finally, after a long time, when it pleased God, Brother John, unable to bear the great majesty of Christ the Head, as the paradise of the Mystical Body was revealed to him, exclaimed aloud: "Corpus Meum!" The appeared the Lord Jesus Christ, the Blessed Son of God Incarnate and Glorified. And He showed him the humility ad love which led Him to take flesh in the Virgin Mary and which makes Him come into the hands of the priest every day when he consecrates the host. And that humility held him in such sweet consolation and ineffable and unutterable wonder that he was not able to complete the remaining words of the Consecration. For as Brother John himself said, that humility and condescension of the Savior toward us is so marvelous that our body cannot endure it or words describe it. And as a result he could not proceed.

Therefore after saying "Hoc est Corpus Meum," he was rapt in an ecstasy and fell backward, but was held up by the guardian who was standing beside him for otherwise he would have fallen to the ground. And as the other friars and lay people who were in the church ran up, he was carried into the sacristy as if he were dead. For his body had turned cold like a corpse. And his fingers were so stiffly constracted that they could hardly be opened or moved. And he day there unconscious from morning until terce. This happened during the summer.

Now as I was present and wished very much to know what God's mercy had done in him, almost as soon as he came back to himself I went to him and asked him for the love of God to consent to tell me all about it And because he used to confide in me a great deal, by the grace of God he told me all about it.

And among other things he told me that before and while he was consecrating, his heart became liquefied like heated wax, and his body seemed to be without bones, so that he could not lift his arms or his hands to make the Sign of the Cross over the host. And he added that before he became a priest, it was revealed to him that he would faint that way during Mass. But as he had already said many Masses and that prophecy had not been fulfilled, he had thought that revelation had not come from God. Nevertheless about fifty days before the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin when this thing happened to him, it was revealed to him that it would happen to him, it was revealed to him that it would happen to him around the Feast of the Assumption. But later he had forgotten that promise.
