제2부

성 프란치스코의 오상에 관한 몇가지 고찰

제2부 전반에 걸쳐 우리는 복되신 사부 성 프란치스코께서 거룩한 라베르나산에서 그리스도께로부터 받으신 영광스러운 오상을 깊은 신심을 가지고 고찰해 보고자 합니다.

성 프란치스코의 오상은 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 오상과 같이 다섯 군데의 상처이기 때문에, 이 책에서도 다섯가지 점들을 다루어,

첫째, 성 프란치스코께서 거룩한 라베르나산에 가시게 된 경위

둘째, 성 프란치스코께서 형제들과 함께 그곳에서 사신 생활,

셋째, 세라핌 천사가 나타나서 오산을 박아준 데 대한 것,

넷째, 성 프란치스코께서 오상을 받으신 후 라베르나 산에서 내려와 천사의 성 마리아 성당으로 돌아오신 데 관하여.

다섯째, 성 프란치스코께서 세상을 떠나신 후 거룩한 형제들과 신심깊은 다른 신자들에게 발현하시어 영광스러운 오상을 보여주시고, 그에 관해 계시해 주신 이야기가 될 것입니다.

제1장 치우시의 올란도 백작이 라베르나산을 성 프란치스코께 주게 된 일.

성 프란치스코께서는 1224년, 43세가 되던 해 하느님으로부터 영감을 받고, 동료인 레오 형제와 함께 로마냐로 가기 위해 스뽈레또 계곡을 떠났다. 길을 가는 도중에 그들은 몬테펠트로의 성 밑을 자나가게 되었는데 기사직에 오르는 것을 축하하기 위해 성대한 향연과 축제가 한참 벌어지고 있었다.

성 프란치스코는 마을 사람들로부터 바로 그 성에서 축제가 벌어지고 있고 많은 귀족들이 그 축제에 참석하려고 여러 지방에서 모여들고 있다는 이야기를 들었다. 그때 성인은 레오 형제에게 “하느님의 도우심으로 약간의 훌륭한 영적인 열매를 거둘지도 모르니 축제가 열리는 저곳으로 올라가 봅시다”하고 말했다.

성에 도착한 성 프란치스코는 안으로 들어가서 귀족들이 모여있는 광장으로 갔다. 그는 성령의 뜨거운 열정으로 나지막한 담벼락 위에 올라가 이태리말로 “하느님께서 우리에게 주실 큰 상급을 생각하면, 현재의 온갖 고통도 내게는 즐거움이 된다”를 주제로 삼아 설교하기 시작했다. 그리고 성령이 지시하는 대로 이 주제에 관해 거룩한 사도들과 순교자들의 갖가지 고난과, 거룩한 증거자들의 엄한 보속 그리고 거룩한 동정녀들과 다른 여러 성인들의 많은 시련과 유혹의 실례를 들어 그 진리를 증명해 가면서 매우 진지하고 훌륭하게 설교했기 때문에, 거의 모인 모든 사람들은 성인을 주의깊게 바라보면서, 마치 하느님의 천사가 자기들에게 설교해 주는 듯, 성인의 설교를 열심히 듣고 있었다. 그 축제에 참석하기 위해 온 귀족들 중에 있던 올란도 백작은 그 놀라운 설교를 듣고 마음속으로 깊이 하느님의 감도를 받았다. 그는 토스카나 출신으로 가센티노 치우시에 사는 명망있고 부유한 백작이었는데, 성 프란치스코의 거룩함과 그가 행한 기적들에 대하여 놀라운 이야기를 들어서 그에게 큰 존경심을 가지고 있었다. 그래서 한번 만나 그의 설교를 듣고 싶어했던 터라 설교가 끝나면 자신의 영신문제에 관해 그와 이야기를 나누기로 마음먹었다.

설교가 막 끝나자 그는 성 프란치스코를 옆으로 모시고 가서 “사부님, 제 영혼의 구원에 관해 사부님과 말씀을 나누고 싶습니다”라고 말했다.

이에 성인은 “참 반갑습니다. 그렇지만 오늘 아침은 가셔서 당신의 친구를 축하해 주시오, 왜냐하면 그들이 당신을 그 축제에 초대했기 때문입니다. 그들과 만찬을 함께하시고 그것이 다 끝난 후에 당신이 원하는 만큼 서로 이야기를 나누기로 합시다”라고 대답해 주었다.

이래서 올란도 백작은 만찬에 참석한 다음 성인께 다시 돌아와서는 자기의 여러 가지 신앙문제를 오래동안 이야기 나누었다. 올란도 백작은 성인께 이렇게 말했다. “프란치스코 형제여, 저는 사람들로부터 멀리 떨어져 속죄생활을 하고 싶거나, 혹은 은수생활을 하고 싶은 사람들에게 아주 정당한 조용하고 숲이 울창한 라베르나라고 하는 산을 토스카나에 갖고 있습니다. 만일 형제와 동료들께서 마음에 드신다면 제 영혼의 구원을 위해서 형제들께 그 산을 기꺼이 드리겠습니다.”

성인은 자기가 갈망하던 것을 희사받았을 때 마음이 대단히 기뻐 먼저 하느님께 감사를 드리고는, 올란도 백작에게도 감사하면서 “백작님, 당신께서 집에 돌아가시면 제가 형제 두 사람을 보내드리겠습니다. 그러면 그 두 사람에게 그 산을 안내해 주십시오. 만일 그곳에 기도와 속죄생활에 적합한 산이라면 백작님의 고마우신 호의를 기꺼이 받아들이겠습니다.” 이 말을 하고 나서 성 프란치스코는 그곳을 떠나, 여행을 모두 마치고 천사의 성 마리아 성당으로 돌아왔다.

화려한 축제가 폐막된 후 올란도 백작도 라베르나산에서 1마일 떨어진 치우시의 자기 성으로 귀가하였다.

성 프란치스코는 천사의 성 마리아 성당으로 돌아와서 자기 형제 두 사람을 올란도 백작에게 보냈다. 그들이 성에 도착하자 올란도 백작은 큰 기쁨과 친절로써 맞이했다.

올란도 백작은 이 형제들에게 라베르나산을 보여주려 했고, 산 짐승들로부터 형제들을 보호하기 위해 50명의 무장한 사람들을 동행시켰다. 형제들은 무장한 사람들의 호위를 받으면서 라베르나 산으로 올라가 조심스레 이곳저곳 답사했다. 마침내 형제들은 기도와 관상에 아주 적합한 조그마한 봉우리가 있는 곳으로 보게 되어, 그 장소에 주님의 이름으로 자기들과 성인의 거처를 만들기로 결정했다. 형제들은 동행했던 무장 호위병들의 도움을 받아 창으로 나뭇가지를 약간 쳐서 조그만 움막집을 하나 지었다.

이렇게 해서 하느님의 이름으로 라베르나산과 형제들이 거할 거처를 인수받고 성인에게 돌아온 형제들은 그곳이 관상하기에 매우 한적하고 알맞은 장소라는 것과, 또 그 산을 어떻게 인수받았는지를 상세히 설명했다. 이 소식을 듣고 난 성 프란치스코는 대단히 기뻐하며 하느님께 찬미와 감사를 드리고는 즐거운 표정으로 이렇게 말했다. “사랑하는 아들들, 대천사 성 미카엘의 단식제가 얼마 남지 않았습니다. 하느님과 영광스런 동정 마리아와 또 거룩한 천사들의 존귀와 영광을 위하여, 그리스도의 공로로써 얻은 이 복된 산을 보속생활로 바치기 위해 하느님의 섭리로 우리에게 마련된 라베르나산에서 그 단식재를 보내는 것은 하느님의 뜻이라고 나는 굳게 믿습니다.” 이 말을 마치고 성 프란치스코는 무수한 지혜와 웅장한 웅변을 지닌 아씨시 마리냐노의 맛세오 형제와 귀족 출신으로 세상에서는 기사로서 활약했던 리에티의 안젤로 탄그레도 형제, 그리고 놀랄 만한 단순함과 순수함을 지니고 있음으로 해서 성인이 지극히 사랑했고, 그렇게 때문에 그의 모든 비밀까지 다 말하곤 했던 레오 형제를 데려가기로 했다.

성인은 이 세형제와 함께 열심히 기도하였다. 기도가 끝나자, 성 프란치스코는 자신과 세 형제들을 뒤에 남는 형제들의 기도에 맡기고, 십자가에 못박히신 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 라베르나 산을 향해 길을 떠났다.

길을 떠나면서 성인은 세 사람의 동료 중 한 사람, 즉 맛세오 형제를 불러 이렇게 말했다. “맛세오 형제, 형제가 이 여행에서 원장이 되고 우두머리가 됩니다. 여행하거나 중도에서 쉴 때에 우리는 우리의 관습대로 하느님에 대해 말하든가 혹은 침묵을 지키는 것 중 하나를 하기로 합시다. 먹는 것, 자는 것 등에 관해서는 일체 생각 않기로 합시다. 그러나 하룻밤을 묵어야 한다면 빵을 조금 얻도록 애긍을 청하여, 하느님이 마련해 주시는 곳에서 머물러 쉬기로 합시다.”

세 형제는 고개를 끄덕였다. 그리고는 십자성호를 그으며 걸음을 재촉했다.

첫날 저녁은 형제들의 수도원에 도착해서 하룻밤을 지냈다.

둘째날 저녁은 날씨는 험악했고 피곤했으며, 또 형제들은 어떤 수도원에도, 마을에도, 집에도 도달할 수 없었다. 이렇게 험악한 날씨에 밤이 찾아왔다. 그들은 쓰고 있지 않는 어느 빈 성당을 겨우 찾아내어 거기에서 그날 밤을 지내게 되었다.

형제들이 한참 자고 있는 중에 성 프란치스코는 가만히 일어나 기도하기 시작했다. 일시경쯤 되자 수많은 사나운 악마들이 굉장히 요란한 소리를 내며 사방에서 그를 공격해와 괴롭히기 시작했다.

악마 중 한 놈은 그를 이쪽에서 다른 놈은 저쪽에서 잡아당겼다. 또 한 놈은 밑으로 끌어내리고 어떤 놈은 위로 끌어올리려고 안간힘을 다 썼다. 한 놈이 이것으로 위협하면 또 다른 놈은 다른 것으로 그를 꾸짖었다. 시간이 갈수록 악마들의 행패는 점점 더 심해졌지만 그는 기도로써 인내했고, 악마들은 온갖 수단을 다 써서 기도를 방해하려 했다. 그러나 하느님께서 성 프란치스코와 함께 계셨기 때문에, 그 악마들은 방해를 계속할 수가 없었다. 얼마동안 악마들의 그러한 공격을 견디어낸 성인은 큰 소리로 “저주받은 영들아, 너희들은 하느님의 손이 너희에게 허락하는 것만을 할 수 있을 뿐이다. 그러므로 전능하신 하느님의 이름으로 말하노니, 하느님이 너희들에게 허락하시는 것이면, 무엇이나 내 육체에 행하라. 내 육체보다 더 나쁜 적을 가지고 있지 않기 때문에, 나는 그 공격을 기꺼이 견디어내겠다. 만일 너희들이 나의 이 적에게 복수를 가한다면 내게 큰 호의를 베푸는 셈이 된다”하고 외쳤다.

그러자 악마들은 포악과 광포로써 그를 바싹 포위하더니, 성당 안을 여기저기 끌고 다니며, 먼저보다 훨씬 더 큰 상처를 입히고 못견디도록 괴롭혀댔다.

그때 성인은 악마들에게 사정없이 시달리면서도 부르짖기를 “내 주 예수 그리스도여, 당신이 저에게 보여주시는 크신 사랑과 자비에 감사하나이다. 왜냐하면 주님께서는 당신 종이 저승에서 벌을 받지 않도록 모든 잘못을 저지른 당신 종을 이승에서 혹독하게 벌하실 때, 그것은 바로 당신의 크신 사랑의 표이기 때문이로소이다. 저는 하느님 당신이 제 죄에 대해 보내시기를 원하는 어떤 고통이나 역경도 기쁨으로 감내할 준비가 되어 있나이다”하고 말했다.

오히려 하느님께 감사와 찬미를 드리는 성 프란치스코의 인내로 수치와 역습을 당한 악마들은 자취없이 곧 떠나가 버렸다.

성령의 불이 훨훨 타오르는 속에 성인은 성당에서 나와 가까운 숲으로 들어갔다. 실바람에 나뭇잎 스치는 소리만 들리는 적적한 풀숲에서 기도하면서, 울면서, 가슴을 치면서, 그는 영혼의 정배시요 기쁨이신 예수 그리스도를 애타게 찾았다.

얼마를 지나 마침내 성인은 그 마음의 은밀한 깊은 곳에서 목마르게 찾던 그리스도를 발견했다. 그는 주님으로서의 그리스도께 공손히 말했고, 심판자로서의 그리스도께 응답했으며, 다음에 아버지로서의 그리스도께 애원했고, 또 친구처럼 그리스도와 대화했다.

그날 밤 형제들은 잠에서 깨어나 성 프란치스코가 하고 있는 말을 서서 들으며 조용히 살펴보았다. 성인은 눈물로써 간절히 기도하면서 죄인들에게 자비를 베푸시도록 하느님께 부르짖고 있었다. 그들은 성인이 마치 그리스도의 수남을 직접 보는 것처럼 그리스도의 수난에 대해 큰 소리로 울고 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

바로 그날 밤 그들은 성인이 가슴에 팔을 십자가형으로 포개어 얹은 채 땅에서 들어올려져 눈부시게 밝은 구름에 둘러싸여, 오래동안 공중에 매달려 있는 것을 목격했다.

이처럼 성 프란치스코는 한숨도 자지 않고, 거룩한 관상 속에 온 밤을 모두 지새웠으므로 그 다음날 아침에는 완전히 기진맥진하여 나무 쇠약해졌기 때문에 걸어서는 도저히 여행을 계속할 수 없다는 것을 안 형제들은 어느 가난한 농부에게 가서 걸어서는 여행할 수 없는 프란치스코 형제를 위해 하느님의 사랑으로 당나귀를 한필 빌려줄 것을 요청했다.

프란치스코라는 말이 언급되는 것을 듣고 난 농부는 형제들에게 “당신네들이 바로 사람들이 훌륭하다고 그렇게 많이들 이야기하는 아씨시의 프란치스코 형제와 함께 사는 형제들이요?” 하고 물었다. 형제들은 “예 그렇습니다”하고 말하며, 자기들이 당나귀를 구하는 것도 바로 그를 위해서라고 설명했다. 이 말을 들은 이 선량한 농부는 큰 신심과 성의를 다하여 당나귀에 안장을 얹어 끌고 왔고 경외심을 가지고 성인이 안장에 올라앉는 것을 도와주었다. 여행이 계속되므로 농부는 당나귀 두에서 형제들과 함께 걸어왔다. 그들이 얼마 가지 않아서 농부는 성인에게 “당신이 아씨시의 프란치스코 형제이십니까?”하고 물었다.

성 프란치스코는 자기가 바로 프란치스코 형제라고 대답했다. “그러시면 모든 사람들이 형제를 훌륭하다고 생각하는 그만큼 훌륭하게 되시도록 노력하셔야 합니다. 수많은 사람들이 형제께 큰 신심을 갖고 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 저는 사람들이 형제에게서 기대하는 것과는 다른 어떤 점이 결코 있지 않도록 형제께 당부드립니다.”하고 농부는 말했다.

성 프란치스코는 이 말을 들었을 때 농부의 충고에 조금도 마음이 상하지 않았고, 또 오늘날 수도복을 입은 많은 거만한 친구들이 흔히, “나에게 충고하는 이 짐승 같은 녀석이 도대체 누구야?”하고 말하는 것처럼 혼잣말로 중얼거리지도 않았다.

성인은 즉시 당나귀에서 내려 농부 앞에 무릎을 꿇고, 그의 발에 겸손히 입맞추면서, 자신에게 이처럼 황송하게도 자비로이 충고해 준 데 대해서 감사했다.

형제들과 농부는 아주 경건하게 성 프란치스코를 부축하여 일으켜 세워 당나귀에 다시 타게 했다. 그리고는 여행을 계속했다.

그들이 가파른 산을 반쯤 올라갔을 때, 살을 태울 듯한 한여름 햇볕이 너무도 강렬하게 내려쬐이고, 길을 멀고 험하여, 농부는 목이 타서 몹시 고통을 받고 있었다. 그는 앞서가는 성인에게 “아이고 목말라 죽을 지경입니다. 지금 마실 것이 없으면 금방 질식할 것 같습니다”하고 숨통이 터지는 듯 소리쳤다.

그러자 성인은 곧 당나귀에서 내려 땅에 무릎을 꿇고 하늘을 향해 손을 쳐들고 기도했다. 마침내 그는 하느님께서 그의 기도를 응답하신 것을 알고 농부에게 “빨리 저 바위로 뛰어가시오, 그러면 그리스도께서 당신의 자비로써 바위에서 방금 흘러나오게 하신 그 물이 흐르고 있을 것입니다”하고 가르쳐 주었다. 그 농부는 성 프란치스코가 자기에게 가르쳐 준 곳으로 급히 달려가 성인의 기도의 힘으로 단단한 바위에서 물이 나오게 한 맑은 샘을 찾아냈다. 땀과 먼지로 뒤범벅이된 그 농부는 기쁨에 넘쳐 옥수 같은 샘물을 실컷 마시고 나니 이젠 정말 살 것 같았다. 정말 그 샘은 성 프란치스코의 기도를 통하여 하느님께서 기적으로 만드신 것 같다. 왜냐하면 전에도 후에도 그 장소나 근처 어디에도 샘터를 찾아볼 수 없었기 때문이다.

이 기적을 행하신 후 성인은 형제들과 농부와 함께 이러한 기적을 보여주신 데 대해 하느님께 감사드렸다. 그리고 다시 걸음을 재촉했다.

그들이 라베르나산에 이르는 산 밑에 도착하여 길가에 서 있는 어떤 참나무 그늘에서 잠시 휴식을 취하게 되었다(그런데 이 참나무는 지금도 그 자리에 그대로 남아 있다). 참나무 그늘에서 쉬는 동안 성 프란치스코는 그 장소와 주위 경치를 살펴봤다. 그가 이런 관상에 잠겨 있을 때 한 떼의 수많은 여러 종류의 새들이 날아와 즐거운 노래를 지저귀고 날개를 치며 기쁨을 표시하였다. 새들은 성인을 둘러싸고 어떤 놈은 부옇게 흙먼지가 앉은 성인의 머리에, 어떤 놈은 어깨와 팔에, 더욱이 어떤 놈은 그의 가슴과 발위에 아주 정답게 앉았다. 이것을 보고 형제들과 농부는 크게 놀랐다.

성 프란치스코는 심령이 환희로 가득차 “내 사랑하는 형제들이여, 우리가 이 장소를 수락하여 이 적막한 산에서 잠시 지내게 된 것은 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 기쁘시게 하는 것이라 나는 믿습니다. 우리의 작은 형제 자매들인 새들까지도 우리가 온 것을 이토록 기뻐하고 있기 때문입니다”하고 말했다.

이 말을 한 성인은 자리에서 일어나 목적지를 향해 걸어갔다. 드디어 그들 일행은 형제들이 처음 선택한 지점에 당도하였다.

하느님과 하느님의 가장 거룩하신 이름에 영광. 아멘.

Part Two

The Considerations on The Holy Stigmata

In this part we shall contemplate with devout consideration the glorious, sacred, and holy Stigmata of our blessed Father St. Francis which he received from Christ on the holy Mount Alveran. And because those Stigmata were five, like the five Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, therefore this treatise shall have Five Considerations.

The First will be about the way St. Francis came to the holy Mount Alverna.

The Second will be about the life he lived and the conversation he had with his companions on that holy mountain.

The Third will be about the apparition of the Seraph and the imprinting of the most holy Stigmata.

The Forth will be about St. Francis' going down from Mount Alverna after he had received the holy Stigmata and about his return to St. Mary of the Angels.

The Fifth will be about certain apparitions and revelations which were given after the death of St. Francis to some holy friars and to other pious persons concerning those glorious Stigmata.

The First Consideration: How Count Orlando of Chiusi Gave Mount Alverna to St. Francis.

Regarding the First Consideration, you should know that St. Francis, some time before he had the Stigmata of the Savior, move by an inspiration from God, left the Valley of Spoleto to go to the Romagna with his companion Brother Leo.

And on their way they passed by the foot of the castle and walled village of Montefeltro, where at that time a great banquet and festival were being held to celebrate the knighting of one of the Counts of Montefeltro. When St. Francis heard from the villagers about the festivity that was taking place, and that many noblemen had gathered there from various districts, he said to Brother Leo: "Let's go up to that festival, for with God's help we will gather some good spiritual fruit."

Among the noblemen who had come to that meeting was a great and wealthy Count from Tuscany named Orlando of Chiusi in Casentino who, because of the marvelous thins he had heard about the holiness and miracles of St. Francis, had had heard about the holiness and miracles of St. Francis, had a great devotion for him and wanted very much to see him and hear him preach.

St. Francis arrived at that village and entered and went to the square where all those noblemen were assembled. And in fervor of spirit he climbed onto a low wall and began to preach, taking as the theme of his sermon these words in Italian: "So great is the good which I expect that all pain is to me a delight." And under the dictation of the Holy Spirit he preached on this theme so devoutly and so profoundly-proving its truth by the various sufferings and martyrdoms of the holy Apostles and Martyrs, and by the severe penances of the holy Confessors, and by the many tribulations and temptations of the holy Virgins and of the other Saints-that everyone stood there gazing attentively at him, listening to him as though an angel of God were speaking. Among them, Count Orlando was touched to the heart by God through the marvelous preaching of St. Francis, and he decided to have a talk with him after the sermon about the state of his soul.

Therefore, when the sermon was over, he took St. Francis aside and said to him: "Father, I should like to speak to you about the salvation of my soul."

But St. Francis, who was very tactful, answered: "I am glad. But this morning go and honor your friends, since they invited you to the festival, and have dinner with them, and after dinner we will talk together as much as you wish."

Count Orlando therefore went to dine, and after dinner he returned to So. Francis and had a long talk with him about the state and salvation of his soul. And at the end Count Orlando said to St. Francis: "Brother Francis, I have a mountain in Tuscany which is very solitary and wild and perfectly suited for someone who wants to do penance in a place far from people or who wants to live a solitary life. It is called Mount Alverna. If that mountain should please you and your companions, I would gladly give it to you for the salvation of my soul."

Now St. Francis had a most intense desire to firn dome solitary place where he could conveniently devote himself to contemplation. So when he heard this offer, he first praised God who provides for His little sheep, and then he thanked Count Orlando, saying: Sire, when you go home, I will send two of my companions to you, and you can show them that mountain. And if it seems suitable for prayer and penance, I very gladly accept your charitable offer."

And after he said that, St. Francis left. And when he had ended his journey, he returned to St. Mary of the Angels.

And likewise Count Orlando, after the knighting festival was over, returned to his castle named Chiusi, which is a mile away from Mount Alvera.

After St. Francis had returned to St. Mary of the Angels, he sent two of his companions to Cout Orlando. They searched for him, but because they did not know that part of the country they had great difficulty in finding his castle. When they arrived, he was very glad to see them, and he welcomed them with great joy and kindness, as though they wer angels of God.

And wishing to show them Mount Alverna, he sent about fifty armed men with them, perhaps to protect them from wild animals. With this escort the friars climbed up Mount Alverna and explored it for a place where they might set up a house to live in. Finally they came to a part of the mountain where there was a small plateau that was very suitable for prayer and contemplation. And they decided in the name of the Lord to make their dwelling and that of St. Francis in that place.

With the help of the armed men who accompanied them, they cut down some branches with swords and built a little hut with the branches.

And having thus in the name of God accepted and taken possession of Mount Alverna and of the friars' Place on that Mountain, with the count's permission, they left and went back to St. Francis.

And when they came to him, they told him that the place was very solitary and suitable for contemplation. And they told him in detail how they had taken possession of it.

On hearing this news St. Francis was very happy. And praising and thanking God, he said to those friars with a joyful ｅxpression: "My sons, our Lent of St. Michael the Archangel is approaching. I firmly believe that it is the will of God that we spend that Lent up on Mount Alveran, which has been prepared for us by Divine Providence, so that for the honor and glory of God and the glorious Virgin Mary and the holy angels, we may merit from Christ to consecrate that blessed mountain with penance."

Then, having said that, St. Francis took with him Brother Mass대 of Marignano of Assisi, who was a man of great wisdom and eloquence, and Brother Angelo Tancredi of Rieti who was a man of very noble birth and had been a knight in the world, and Brother Leo, who was a man of the greatest simplicity and purity, because of which St. Francis loved him very much and used to reveal nearly all his secrets to him.

With those three friars St. Francis began to pray. And when their prayer was finished, he commended himself and the above-mentioned friars to the prayers of the friars who were staying behind. And with those three, in the name of Jesus Christ Crucified, he set out for Mount Alverna.

And as they were leaving, St. Francis called one of his three companions-Brother Mass대-and our superior on this journey. And while traveling and stopping together, we will talk about God or we will keep silence. And we will not take any thought about eating or sleeping, but when the time for overnight rest in the place which God will prepare for us."

Then those three companions nodded. And making the Sign of the Cross, they set out.

And the first evening they came to a Place of the friars, and they stayed there overnight.

The second evening, because of bad weather and because they were tired and were unable to reach any Place of the friars or any village or house, when night came on with bad weather, they sought shelter in an abandoned and uninhabited church. And they lay down to rest there.

While his companions were sleeping, St. Francis began to pray. And he was persevering in prayer when, during the first watch of the night, a great number of the fiercest devils came with very great noise and tumult, and they began to attack and persecute him. one took hold of him here, another there. one pulled him down, another up. one threatened him with one thing, another scolded him for something else. And so they strove to disturb his praying in different ways.

But they were not able to do so because God was with him. Ad when St. francis had endured those attacks of the devils for some time, he began to cry out in a loud voice: "You damned spirits, you can do only what the hand of God allows you. And therefore in the name of Almighty God I tell you to do to my body whatever God allows you I will gladly endure it since I have no enemy worse than my body. And so if you take revenge on my enemy for me, you do me a very great favor."

Then the devils seized him with great violence and defeated by his endurance and patience, went away.

And in fervor of spirit St. Francis came out of the Church and entered into a forest that was nearby. And there he gave himself to prayer. And praying and weeping and beating his breast, he sought Jesus Christ, the spouse and delight of his soul. And at last he found Him in the secret depths of his heart. And he spoke to Him reverently as to his Lord. Then he answered Him as his Judge. Next he entreated Him as a father. Then he talked with Him as with a friend.

During that night and in that forest, his companions, after they awoke, stood listening and wondering what he was doing. And they saw and heard him devoutly praying with tears and cries to God to have mercy on sinners. And they also saw and heard him weeping aloud over the Passion of Christ, as if he were seeing it with his own eyes.

That same night they saw him raying with his arms crossed on his chest, raised up above the ground and suspended in the air for a long time, surrounded by a bright cloud.

And so he spent that whole night in holy contemplation without sleeping.

The next morning, as his companions knew that, owing to his exhaustion and lack of sleep during the night, St. francis was too weak to be able to continue the journey on foot, they went to a poor local peasant and asked him, for the love of God, to lend his donkey for their Father, Brother Francis, who could not travel on foot. Hearing Brother Francis mentioned, the man asked them: "Are you friars of that Brother Francis of Assisi about whom people say so much good?"

The friars answered, "Yes," and that it was really for him that they were asking for the donkey.

Then with great devotion and care this good man saddled the donkey and led it to St. Francis, and with great reverence helped him get into the saddle.

Then they continued their journey, the peasant walking with them behind his donkey. And after they had gone a while, he said to St. Francis: "Tell me, are you Brother Francis of Assisi?"

St. Francis answered that he was.

"Well, then," said the peasant, "try to be as good as everyone thinks you are, because many people have great faith in you. So I urge you" never let there be anything in you different from what they expect of you."

When St. Francis heard these words, he did not mind being admonished by a peasant, and he did not say to himself, as many proud fellows who wear the cowl nowadays would say, "쫴 is this brute who admonishes me?" But he immediately got off the donkey and threw himself on his knees before the farmer and humbly kissed his feet, thanking him for having deigned to admonish him so charitably.

Then his companions and the peasant very devoutly helped him to his feet and set him on the donkey again. And they traveled on.

When they had climbed about halfway up the mountain, because the summer heat was very great and the path was long and steep, the peasant began to suffer intensely from thirst, and he called ahead to St. Francis: "I am dying of thirst. If I don't have something to drink, I'll suffocate in a minute!"

So St. Francis immediately got off the donkey and began to pray. And he remained kneeling on the ground, raising his hands toward Heaven, until he knew by revelation that God had rated his prayer. Then he said to the peasant: "Run quickly to that rock, and there you will find running water which Christ in His mercy has just caused to flow from the rock."

The man ran to the place which St. Francis had shown him, and found a very fine spring that had been made to flow through the hard rock by the power of St. Francis' prayer. And he drank all he wanted, and felt better.

And it truly seems that that spring was produced by a divine miracle through the prayers of St. Francis, because neither before nor afterward was any spring ever seen there or anywhere nearby.

After he had done this, St. Francis, with his companions and the peasant, gave thanks to God for having shown them this miracle. And then they traveled on.

And as they drew near to the peak that forms Mount Alverna itself, it pleased St. Francis to rest for a while under a certain oak tree standing by the path that is still there now.

While resting under the oak tree St. Francis began to study the location and the scenery. And when he was absorbed in this contemplation, a great number of all kinds of birds came flying down to him with joyful songs, and twittering and fluttering their wings. And they surrounded St. Francis in such a way that some of them settled on his head and others on his shoulders and others on his knees, and still others on his arms and lap and on his hands and around his feet. They all showed great joy by their tuneful singing and happy movements, as if they were rejoicing at his coming and inviting and persuading him to stay there.

Seeing this, his companions and the peasant were greatly surprise. St. Francis rejoiced in spirit and said to them: "My dear Brothers, I believe it is pleasing to Our Lord Jesus Christ that we accept a Place and live a while on this solitary mountain, since our little brothers and sisters the birds show such joy over our coming."

After saying these words, he arose and they journeyed on. And at last they came to the spot which his companions had first selected, where until then there was nothing but a very poor little hut made of tree-branches.

To the glory of God and of His Most Holy Name. Amen.

And this is the end of the First Consideration, namely, how St. Francis came to the holy Mount Alverna.
