제24장 성 프란치스코가 바빌론의 군주와 유혹하는 창녀를 회개시킨 이야기

성 프란치스코는 그리스도 신앙에 대한 열성과 순교에 향한 열망에 불타올라 한때 가장 거룩한 동료 열 두 명을 대리고 바다를 건너 바빌론의 군주를 찾아가려고 하였다.

일행은 사라센인들이 살고 있는 지방에 도착했다. 그곳에는 포악한 사람들이 길을 지키고 있어 그리스도 신자로서 그곳을 지나는 이는 어느 누구도 죽음을 면할 수가 없었다. 성 프란치스코와 동행자들은 하느님의 은총으로 죽음을 면했으나, 잡혀서 채찍으로 맞고 묶이어 군주 앞에 끌리어 나갔다. 그 앞에서 성 프란치스코는 그리스도의 신앙에 대하여 성신이 감도하시는 대로 훌륭히 설교를 하고, 이 신앙을 위해서는 불 속에 들어가는 것마저 원한다고 말했다. 이에 군주는 성인의 굳은 신앙과 이 세상 물질에 무관심함을 보고 성인께 존경심을 품었다. 성 프란치스코는 비록 가난하지만, 군주가 주려는 선물을 도무지 받지 않고, 순교를 열렬히 원했다.

그 후로 군주는 기꺼이 성인의 말을 들었고 자주 와달라고 간청했다. 더구나 관대하게도 성인과 동료들이 어디든지 원하는 곳에 가서 설교를 해도 좋다는 허락을 주었을 뿐 아니라 한 증명서를 주어, 그것을 보는 이는 누구도 그 일행을 해치지 못하게 했다.

이 너그러운 허락을 얻은 성인은 제자를 둘씩 짝지어 그리스도의 복음을 전파하도록 사라센 영토의 곳곳으로 보냈다. 자기도 동료 한명과 한 지방을 택하여 가다가 어떤 여관에 들어가서 묵게 되었다. 그곳에는 몸은 미인이나 영혼이 더러운 여인이 하나 있었는데 그 여자는 성인에게 유혹해 왔다.

성 프란치스코는 곧 대답하여 “그러지요, 침실로 갑시다”하니 여인은 그를 자기 방으로 안내하였다. 성 프란치스코는 “이리 오시오. 내가 훨씬 더 부드러운 침대에 데려다 주겠습니다”하고 말하고는 그 집에서 활활 타고 있던 불 안으로 데리고 갔다. 성 프란치스코는 끓어오르는 열정으로 벌거벗고 나서 활활 달아오르는 불 속에 뛰어든 다음, 그 여인한테도 옷을 벗고 이 아름답고 화려한 침대에 드러누우라고 말했다. 성인은 즐거운 듯이 오래동안 누워 있었으나, 조금도 타거나 그을리지 않았다. 이 기적을 보자 그 여인은 공포에 떨며 마음속으로 양심이 가책을 느꼈다. 자기 죄와 악한 생각을 뉘우칠 뿐만 아니라 그리스도 신앙으로 개종하였고, 성덕도 뛰어나게 되어 마침내는 그 지방의 많은 사람을 개종시켰다.

이제는 그곳에서 더 이상 열매를 거둘 수 없음을 본 성 프란치스코는 하느님의 계시를 받고 본국으로 돌아갈 준비로 동료들을 소집한 다음 군주에게 나아가 작별인사를 드렸다. 군주는 “프란치스코 형제여, 나는 그리스도의 신앙으로 개종하고 싶은 생각은 간절하지만, 지금 당장은 좀 두렵습니다. 내가 개종한 것을 만일 사라센 사람들이 알면 나뿐이 아니라 그대와 그대 동료들을 모두 죽일 것입니다. 그대는 아직도 많은 선행을 할 수 있고, 나도 역시 중대한 일이 많이 남아 있으니, 나와 그대를 지금 죽게 하고 싶지 않습니다. 어떻게 하면 구원을 받을 수 있는지 나에게 가르쳐 주십시오. 나는 그대가 시키는 대로 하겠습니다”라고 말하니, 성 프란치스코는 이와같이 대답하였다. “페하, 저는 지금 페하를 떠나갑니다. 고국에 돌아가 제가 하느님의 부르심을 받고 세상을 떠나 천국에 올라가면, 하느님의 뜻을 따라 형제 두 사람을 페하께 보낼 것이며, 페하는 그들의 손으로 그리스도의 세례를 받아 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 계시해 주신 대로 구원되실 것입니다. 하느님께서 페하께 은총을 내려주신 대로 구원되실 것입니다. 하느님께서 페하께 은총을 내려주실 때 신앙과 열심히 잘 준비되어 있도록, 그 동안 페하께서는 온갖 장애물에서 벗어나십시오.” 군주는 그렇게 하기로 약속했다.

성 프란치스코는 거룩한 동료들과 함께 고국으로 돌아왔다. 수년 후 성 프란치스코는 세상을 떠났고 그 영혼을 하느님께 돌려드렸다.

군주는 병이 들었으나 성인이 약속한 것이 그대로 이루어지기를 고대하면서, 성문에다 경비병들을 세워, 성 프란치스코의 수도복을 입은 두 사람이 오면 곧 데려오라고 명령하였다. 그 무렵 성인은 형제 두 사람에게 발현하여, 곧 군주를 찾아가서 그에게 구원을 얻도록 해주라고 명령하였다. 그들은 즉시 출발하여 바다를 건너 경비병들의 안내로 군주 앞에 나아갔다. 형제들을 보자 군주는 몹시 기뻐하며, “성 프란치스코가 나에게 약속한 대로 지금이야말로 하느님께서 나를 구원하시기 위해 당신 종들을 보내셨음을 알았습니다”하고 말했다. 군주는 그 두 형제에게 그리스도 신앙의 진리를 배워 영세를 받았다.

이처럼 그리스도 안에서 새로 탄생한 군주는 앓고 있던 신병으로 이 세상을 떠났지만, 그 영혼은 성 프란치스코의 공로로써 구원을 받았다.

주: 성 프란치스코가 에집트에 갔었고 또 그곳에서 체재했음은 에집트에 있던 유럽인들(주로 십자군)이 증언해 주고 있다. 성 프란치스코는 1219년 이태리의 안코나를 떠난 에집트의 군주(Sultan)에게 여러번 설교했고, 성지를 방문한 후 1220년 9월에 이태리로 돌아왔다. 몇몇이 이 여행에서 성인과 동해했는데, 그중에 카타니아의 베드로 형제와 일루니나또 형제가 들어 있었다. 죠또는 그의 화폭에다 이 에피소드를 담았다.

24. How St. Francis Converted the Sultan and the Prostitute Who Solicited Him to Sin


Spurred on by zeal for the faith of Christ and incited by a desire for martyrdom, St. Francis at one time went beyond the seas with twelve of his very holy companions, planning to travel right to the Sultan of Babylonia.

Now when he arrived in a certain country of the Saracens, where such cruel men guarded the roads that no Christian passing through there could escape being killed, by the grace of God they were not killed, but were taken prisoners, beaten in various ways and very roughly bound and then led before the Sultan.

In his presence St. Francis preached under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in such a divine way about the holy Catholic faith that he offered to enter the fire for it. As a result, the Sultan began to feel great devotion for him, both because of the unshakable conviction of his faith and because of his contempt of the world-for though he was utterly poor he would not accept any gifts-and also because of his fervent longing for martyrdom. And thereafter the Sultan willingly listened to him and asked him to come back to see him many times. Moreover, he generously granted permission to him and to his companions to go anywhere and freely preach wherever they wished in all his empire. And he gave them a certain little token so that no one who saw it should harm them.

After receiving that generous permission, St. Francis sent those chosen companions of his, two by two, into various lands of the Saracens to preach the faith of Christ. And with one companion he chose a certain district, and he went into an inn where he had to rest overnight. And there he found a certain woman who was very beautiful in face and body but very foul in mind and soul. That cursed woman solicited St. Francis to commit a most shameful act with her.

St. Francis answered her: “If you wish me to do what you want, you must also do what I want.”

‘I agree,” she said. “So let’s go and prepare a bed.” And she led him toward a room.

But St. Francis said to her: “Come with me, and I will show you a very beautiful bed.” And he led her to a very large fire that was burning in that house at that time. And in fervor of spirit he stripped himself naked and threw himself down on the fire in the fireplace as on a bad. And he called to her, saying: “Undress and come quickly and enjoy this splendid, flowery, and wonderful bed, because you must be here if you wish to obey me!” And he remained there for a long time with a joyful face, resting on the fireplace as though on flowers, but the fire did not burn or sings him.

On seeing such a miracle that woman was terrified and felt remorse in her heart. And she not only repented her sin and evil intention but was also perfectly converted to the faith of Christ, and through the merits of the holy Father she became so holy in grace that she won many souls for the Lord in that region.

At last, seeing that he was unable to gather the fruit which he desired in that country, St. Francis, as a result of a revelation from God, prepared to return to the lands of the faithful with all his companions, and he assembled them together again. Then he went back to the Sultan and told him that he planned to leave.

The sultan said to him: “Brother Francis, I would willingly be converted to the faith of Christ, but I am afraid to do it now, because these Saracens, if they heard about it, would immediately kill me and you, with all your companions. And since you can still do a great deal of good, and I have to do many important things for the salvation of my soul, I do not want to bring about your premature death and mine. But show me how I can achieve salvation, and I am ready to obey you in everything.”

Then St. Francis said to him: “My Lord, I am leaving you now, but after I have returned to my country and at the call of God, gone to Heaven, after my death, through Divine Providence, I will send you two of my friars from whom you will receive the baptism of Christ and you will be saved, as my Lord Jesus Christ has revealed to me. And meanwhile free yourself from all that may hinder you, so that when the grace of Christ comes to you, He may find you well disposed in faith and devotions.”

The Sultan gladly agreed and promised to do so, and he faithfully obeyed.

After saying good-by to him, St. Francis went back to the lands of the faithful with that venerable group of his holy companions. And after some years St. Francis gave up his soul to God by the death of the body.

And the Sultan grew ill. But awaiting the fulfillment of the dead Saint’s promise, he stationed guards at the gates with orders to bring quickly to him two friars in the habit of St. Francis if they should show up.

At that time St. Francis appeared to two of his friars and ordered them to travel without delay to the Sultan and to obtain for him the salvation which the Saint had promised him. Those friars set out immediately and devoutly to fulfill his command. Ad after going over the sea, they were led to the Sultan by his guards.

When he saw them, The Sultan was filled with intense joy and he said: “Now I know indeed that the Lord has sent His servants to me for my salvation, as St. Francis promised me through a divine revelation.”

And after receiving instructions in the faith of Christ and holy Baptism from those friars, he died reborn in that illness, and his soul was saved through the merits of St. Francis.
