제22장 성 프란치스코가 산비둘기에게 집을 지어주어 자유를 준

 

 

Little Flowers of St. Francis   제22장 성 프란치스코가 산비둘기에게 집을 지어주어 자유를 준 일 한 청년이 산비둘기를 여러 마리 잡아서 팔려고 가지고 나갔다. 성 프란치스코는 온순한 동물에 대하여 늘 자애로운 마음을 가지고 있었는데, 그 청년을 만나자 가엾은 표정으로 그 산비둘기를 바라보다가 그에게 “여보 젊은이, 이 비둘기들을 저에게 주시지 않겠습니까? 성경에도 비둘기는 순결하고 겸손하고 신앙 깊은 영혼에 비유되고 있지 않습니까? 이 유순하고 순결한 새가 자기를 죽이려는 포악한 사람의 손에 넘어가서야 되겠습니까?” 하고 말하니. 청년은 즉시 하느님으로부터 영감을 받아, 비둘기를 전부 성 프란치스코에게 드렸다. 성인은 그 비둘기를 품에 안고 매우 귀여운 듯이 이야기를 하였다. “단순하고 티 없고 순결한 나의 산비둘기들아, 너희들은 어찌하여 잡혔니? 그러나 나는 지금 너희들을 죽음의 손에서 건져내어 너희를 지어내신 이의 명대로 거기서 새끼를 낳고 번성하도록 집을 지어주겠다.” 성 프란치스코는 비둘기를 데리고 가서 모두 다 집을 지어주었다. 산비둘기들은 그 집에서 살며 형제들이 보는 데서 알을 낳고 새끼를 키웠다. 그것들은 성 프란치스코와 여러 형제들과 무척 친해져서, 마치 예전부터 길러온 집닭과도 같았고 성 프란치스코가 강복하여 허락을 주기 전에는 날지 않았다. 성 프란치스코는 그 산비둘기를 준 청년에게 “내 아들, 그대는 우리 형제회의 수도자가 되어, 예수 그리스도를 훌륭히 섬기는 사람이 될 것입니다”하고 말했다. 과연 이 청년은 수도자가 되어 형제회에서 아주 거룩하게 살았다. 그리스도께 찬미. 아멘.   주: 이 이야기는 성 프란치스코가 시에나를 여러번 방문한 것 중 어느 방문시에 있었던 일인 것 같다. 동물과 성 프란치스코와의 관계에 대한 이 모든 에피소드에는 언제나 다음의 두가지 사상이 들어 있다: 동물들에 대한 성 프란치스코의 사랑, 그리고 성인에 대한 동물들의 순종. 22. How St. Francis Freed Some Doves and Made Nests for Them. A boy of the town of Siena caught a number of turtle doves in a snare, and he was carrying them all alive to the market to sell them. But St. Francis, who was always very kind and wonderfully compassionate, especially toward gentle animals and little birds, was stirred by love and pity on seeing the doves. And he said to the boy who was carrying the doves: “Good boy, please give me those doves so that such innocent birds, which in Holy Scripture are symbols of pure, humble, and faithful souls, will not fall into the hands of cruel men who will kill them.” The boy was then inspired by God to give all the doves to St. Francis. When the kind Father had gathered them to his bosom, he began to talk to them in a very gentle way, saying: “My simple, chaste, and innocent Sister Doves, why did you let yourselves be caught? I want to rescue you from death and make nests for you where you can lay your eggs and fulfill the Creator’s commandment to multiply.” And St. Francis cook them with him and made a nest for all of them. And the doves settled in the nests made by St. Francis, and laid their eggs and reared their young right among the friars, and they increased in numbers. They were so tame and familiar with St. Francis and the other friars that they seemed to be like chickens that had always been raised by the friars. And they did not leave until St. Francis gave them permission, with his blessing. The Saint had said to the boy who gave him the doves: “My son, one day you will become a Friar Minor in this Order, and you will serve Our Lord Jesus Christ well.” And it happened as the Saint foretold, because later the boy entered the Order and, through the merits of St. Francis, he led a praiseworthy and very exemplary life until he died. St. St. Francis not only obtained comfort for those little birds in this life but also the joys of eternal life for that youth. May Our Lord Jesus Christ be praised! Amen.
