제20장 형제회를 떠나려던 한 젊은 형제가 아름다운 환시를 본 이야기

신분이 높고 품위있는 청년 하나가 성 프란치스코 형제회에 들어왔다. 얼마쯤 지나자 마귀의 유혹을 받아 자기가 입고 있는 수도복이 아주 싫어져서 흡사 낡은 푸대라도 입고 있는 것 같은 생각이 자꾸 들었다. 거추장스레 긴 옷소매는 신경질이 날 정도였고, 고깔 같은 모자는 지긋지긋하고, 수도복도 길고 거칠어서 견딜 수 없는 짐과 같았다. 형제회를 싫어하는 마음이 더욱더 커져, 마침내 그는 수도복을 벗고 세속에 돌아가려고 결심하게 되었다. 그런데 이 청년을 담당한 수련장은 그에게 예수 그리스의 성체가 모셔진 제대 앞을 지나갈 때는 경건히 무릎을 꿇고, 모자를 벗고, 가슴에 손을 십자가형으로 얹어야 한다고 가르쳤는데, 그는 늘 그렇게 하곤 했다.

수도원을 떠나려 마음먹은 바로 그날 밤, 그는 수도원 제대 앞을 지나갈 일이 있어 평상시와 같이 제대 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 예배를 드렸다. 그 순간 뜻밖에도 탈혼에 빠져 하느님께서는 그에게 놀라운 환시를 보여주셨다. 곧 수많은 성인들의 무리가 모두 아름답고 값진 옷을 두르고, 둘씩 나란히 자기 앞을 행렬지어 지나갔다. 성인들의 얼굴과 손은 태양처럼 빛나고 천사들의 노래와 환호 속에 걸어가고 있었다. 그 성인들 중에서도 두 사람은 다른이들보다 더 훌륭한 옷을 입고 찬란한 빛에 싸여 있어서 더 크게 놀라지 않을 수 없었다. 그런데 행렬 거의 끝에 마치 다른이들에게 특별히 추앙을 받는 새로운 기사처럼 보이는 한 사람을 보았다. 이런 발현을 본 청년은 다만 놀랄 뿐 그 행렬이 무엇을 뜻하는 것인지 알 수가 없었다. 감히 묻지도 못하고 멍하니 바라볼 뿐이었다.

그러나 행렬이 다 지나가자. 그는 용기를 내서 맨 마지막 사람에게 뛰어가 좀 겁을 먹은 채 다음과 같이 물어보았다. “친애하는 형제 여러분, 이 엄숙한 행렬에 참석하시는 저 위대한 분들은 누구인지 말씀해 주십시오.” 그들은 “사랑하는 아들아, 우리들은 모두 작은 형제들이며 지금 천국의 영광에서 오는 길이다”하고 대답하였다. 재차 “다른 분들보다 유달리 더 빛나는 저 두 분은 누구입니까?”라고 물었더니, 그들은 다음과 같이 대답하였다. “그 두 분은 바로 성 프란치스코와 성 안토니오다. 네가 보는 바와 같이 매우 존경을 받고 있는 제 맨 끝의 사람은 요즘 죽은 거룩한 형제인데, 유혹과 용감히 싸워 최후까지 참고 견딘 사람이다. 그래서 우리들은 지금 승리의 노래를 높이 불러 그를 천국 영광으로 데려가는 도중이다. 우리가 입고 있는 이 아름다운 옷은 우리들이 형제회에 있을 때에 꾹 참고 입은 거친 수도복 대신 하느님께서 주신 것이고, 또 네가 우리에게서 보는 영광의 찬란함은 우리가 죽기까지 지켜온 겸손과 통회, 보속과 가난, 순종과 정결에 대한 대가로 하느님께서 주신 것이다. 그러므로 사랑하는 아들아, 이러한 훌륭한 열매를 맺는 보잘것없는 수도복을 몸에 걸치는 것을 싫어해서는 안된다. 너는 지금 프란치스코의 푸대 같은 옷을 입고 그리스도의 사랑을 위하여 세상을 천히 여기며 육신의 사욕을 고행으로 누르고 용감히 악마와 싸우면, 너도 우리와 똑같은 옷과 영광의 빛을 얻으리라.”

이 말을 듣고 청년은 제 정신으로 돌아왔다. 그리고 이 발현에 큰 힘을 얻어 그 유혹을 모두 물리치고 수도원장과 형제들 앞에서 자기의 죄를 고백하였다. 그때부터 새 사람이 된 그는 힘든 고행과 거친 수도복을 좋아하며 뛰어난 성덕 중에서 수도생활을 마쳤다.

20. How St. Francis Appeared in Glory to a Novice Who was Tempted to Leave the Order


A very delicate young man of noble birth entered the Order of St. Francis. A few days after he took the habit, through the instigation of the devil, he began to hate the habit he was wearing so much that he felt as though he was wearing a very coarse sack. The sleeves got on his nerves, he disliked the cowl, and the length and roughness of the habit seemed an unbearable burden to him. And so it happened that as his distaste for the Order increased, he firmly resolved to throw the habit away and return to the world.

Now the novicemaster of this young man, to whom he had been assigned in the beginning, had taught him that when he passed in front of the altar of the friary in which the Blessed Sacrament of the Body of Christ was kept, he should kneel down very reverently and bow very devoutly with his head uncovered and his hands crossed on his chest. And this young man always carefully did so.

And it happened on the night when he had decided to put aside the habit and leave the Order that he had to pass before the altar of the friary, and there, as usual, he knelt and bowed. And all of a sudden he was rapt in spirit and was shown a marvelous vision by God.

For he saw passing before him an almost countless throng of saints, two by two, in procession, and they were dressed in very ornate and precious vestments, and their faces and hands and the visible parts of their bodies were shining more radiantly than the sun. And they marched by, singing hymns, while angels were solemnly and beautifully chanting their joy.

Among those saints there were two who were more splendidly dressed and adorned and who were surrounded by such brilliance that they dazzled anyone who looked at them. And almost at the end of that procession he saw one who was adorned with such glory that he seemed like a new knight being especially honored by the others.
When that young man saw this vision, he was greatly amazed, and he did not know what the procession meant. Yet he did not question those who were passing by-nor could he as he was overwhelmed with bliss. But when the whole procession had passed and he saw only the last ones, he gained courage and ran to them, asking them very timidly: “Dear friends, I beg you to tell me who are those very wonderful persons who are in this venerable procession?”

They turned their radiant faces toward him and answered: “Son, all of us are Friars Minor who have just come from the glory of Paradise.

And he asked again; “Who are those two who shine more brightly than the others?”
And they replied: “Those two who are brighter than the others are St. Francis and St. Anthony. And that last one whom you saw being so honored is a holy friar who recently died. Because he fought valiantly against temptations and persevered in his holy undertaking until the end, we are now conducting him in triumph and glory to the joy of Paradise, with the Saints as companions, while the angels rejoice. And these very beautiful garments which we are wearing were given to us by God in exchange for the rough habits which we wore with patience as religious. And the glorious radiance which you see in us was given to us by God for the humble penance and holy poverty and obedience and pure chastity which we observed to the end with joyful minds and faces. Therefore, son, it should not be hard for you to wear the ‘sack’ of such a fruitful Order because if, with the ‘sack’ of St. Francis, for the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ, you despise the world and mortify your body and fight valiantly against the devil, you will likewise have a similar garment and will shine with us in glory.”

And when they had said those words, the young man came back to himself. And encouraged by that vision, he rejected all temptation and acknowledged his fault before the guardian and the other friars.

Henceforth, moreover, he longed for the roughness of penance and of the habit as for wealth. And thus converted into a better man, he lived a very holy life and died in the Order.
