제18장 성 프란치스코가 오천명이나 되는 형제가 참석한 놀라운 총회를 천사의 성 마리아 수도원에서 개최한 일

그리스도의 충실한 종 성 프란치스코가 천사의 성 마리아 수도원에서 총회를 연 적이 있었는데, 이 회의에 모여온 형제들은 오천명 이상이나 되었다. 여기에는 설교 수도회(성 도밍고회)총장이요, 창립자인 도밍고 성인도 있었다. 이분은 볼로냐에서 로마로 가는 도중에, 성 프란치스코가 천사의 성 마리아 수도원에서 총회를 개최한다는 소식을 듣고 자기 수도회 형제 일곱명과 함께 찾아온 것이다.

이 총회에는 성 프란치스코를 대단히 존경하던 추기경 한분도 참석하였다. 성 프란치스코는 그분이 장차 교황이 될 것이라고 예언하였던바 훗날에 과연 그대로 되었다.

그 당신 교황청이 페루지아 지방에 있었으므로, 이 추기경은 아씨시에 일부러 온 것이었으며, 성 프란치스코와 그 형제들을 위하여 창미사도 드려주고 또 총회에 참석한 형제들 앞에서 강론도 해주곤 하였다. 그는 이 거룩한 모임을 찾아와서, 회의에 참석한 형제들이 천사의 성 마리아 수도원 부근 들판에 육십명, 백명씩, 혹은 이삼백명씩 떼를 지어 앉아서 모두 마음을 다해 하느님께 대해서만 말을 나누거나 오직 기도와 눈물과 자선행위에 몰두해 있는 것을 보게 되자 크나큰 기쁨과 신앙심을 느꼈다.

모든이들이 너무도 침묵을 잘 지키고 예모있게 행동하였으므로, 무슨 불만이나 불평의 소리를 들을 수가 없었다. 또 이렇게 많은 대군중들이 비길 데 없이 질서정연한 데에 감탄한 나머지, 추기경은 눈물을 걷잡지 못하고 벅찬 신앙심에서 “진정 여기야말로 하느님 용사들이 모인 대 야영 진지로구나!”하고 탄복했다.

이때 군중 속에서 쓸데없는 잡담이나 농담하는 소리는 들을 수가 없었고, 그 대신 형제들이 모이기만 하면 기도를 하든지, 성무일도를 합송하거나, 그렇지 않으면 자신의 죄나 은인들의 죄를 눈물로 통회하고, 혹은 영혼의 구원에 대해 이야기할 뿐이었다.

형제들은 이 벌판에서 나뭇가지와 돗자리로 얼기설기 엮어 숙소를 여러개 만들었고, 관구별로 각각 나뉘어 있었다. 그래서 그 총회는 “나뭇가지 혹은 돗자리 총회”라고 불리었다.

그때 잠자리란 맨땅이고, 어떤이는 짚을 조금 깔아 쓰기도 했지만, 베개는 나무토막이나 돌들이었다. 그렇기 때문에 그 광경을 보거나 소문을 들은 사람들은 형제들을 대단히 존경하게 되었고, 또 그 성덕에 대한 평판이 자자하게 퍼졌으므로, 페루지아에 있던 교황청과 또 스뽈레또 골짜기의 다른 여러 곳에서 많은 사람들이 그들을 보러 왔다. 즉, 백작, 남작, 기사와 그 밖의 여러 귀족들이 많이 왔고 수많은 사람들과 추기경, 주교, 수도원장 그 밖의 성직자들이 몰려와서 일찍이 세상에 없었던 더없이 거룩하고 위대하며 또 겸손된 이 모임을 보려 하였다. 그들이 특히 보고 싶어 한 것은 이 성스러운 백성 전체의 지도자요, 참으로 거룩한 사부님이었다. 그처럼 훌륭하고 경건한 한 양떼로 모아서, 참된 목자이신 예수 그리스도의 발자취를 따르게 한 것이다.

총회에 참가한 사람들이 전부 모였을 때에, 모든이의 거룩한 사부요, 총장이셨던 성 프란치스코는 성령의 불길 속에서, 그들에게 하느님의 말씀을 널리 알리고 성령께서 시키시는 대로 소리 높여 설교하였다. 그 설교의 요점은 이러했다. “사랑하는 여러분! 우리는 하느님께 큰 것을 약속하였지만 하느님은 더 큰 것을 우리에게 약속하셨습니다. 그러나 우리는 스스로 한 약속을 힘껏 지키고 하느님께서 약속해 주신 것을 굳이 바랍시다. 세상의 쾌락은 일시적이고 형벌은 끝이 없습니다. 현세의 고통은 잠간이고 내세의 영광은 영원합니다.” 성인은 이런 말로 열렬히 설교하며, 거룩한 어머니이신 교회를 존경과 순종으로 받들고, 형제들은 서로 사랑하고 하느님의 모든 백성을 위하여 기구하며, 어떤 세상 환난을 만나도 인내하고, 행운을 만날 때는 삼가 자중하며, 천사들처럼 청순하고 정결할 것과, 또한 하느님과 사람과 제 양심에 화합하고 평화를 유지할 것이요, 참으로 거룩한 가난을 사랑하며 또 실천하라는 말로 형제들을 격려하고 간곡히 권고하였다. 그리고 또 말씀하시기를 “거룩한 순종으로 여기 모이신 여러분에게 명합니다. 여러분은 먹고 마시거나 그밖에 육신에 필요한 것에 대해 조금도 걱정해서는 안됩니다. 다만 기도와 하느님을 찬미하는 일에만 전력을 기울일 것이요, 육신을 위한 걱정은 모두 하느님께 맡겨드리면 그만입니다. 그 까닭은 그분께서 특별히 여러분한테 마음을 써주시기 때문입니다”라고 하였다.

이에 거기 있던 모든이들은 기쁜 마음과 즐거운 낯으로 이 명령을 듣고, 성 프란치스코의 설교가 끝나자 모든이들은 전부 기도에 몰두했다.

거기에 참석하여 있던 성 도밍고는 그렇게 큰 회중 속에서 육신에 필요한 것을 조금이라도 생각할 형제 하나도 세워두지 않고, 무분별한 방법으로 일 해가는 성 프란치스코의 명령과 생각에 크게 놀랐다. 그 때문에 많은 사람들이 고통을 받으리라 생각했다. 그러나 대 목자이시며 복되신 그리스도께서는 당신의 양떼와 가난한 이를 얼마나 각별히 돌보시는지 보여주시고자, 즉시 페루지아, 스뽈레또, 폴리뇨, 스펠로, 아씨시 그 근방 사람들의 마음속에 이 거룩한 모임에 음식을 가져다주려는 생각을 불러일으켜 주셨다.

그래서 엄숙한 이 장소에는 별안간 사람들이 당나귀와 말과 수레에다 그리스도의 축복받은 가난한 이들에게 요긴하게 쓸 수 있다고 생각되는 먹을 빵과 포도주, 콩, 치이스 그밖에 좋은 음식을 싣고 줄줄이 이어왔고, 그밖에도 주민들은 이 대군중에 필요한 밥상보와 단지와 컵 들 여러 가지 그릇을 가져왔다. 여기서 남보다 많이 가져온 이와 남보다 더 정성되이 대접한 사람들은 스스로 행복감을 느끼었다.

이쯤 되니 처음에는 그저 구경하러 왔던 백작, 남작 그 밖의 신분 높은 이들까지도, 깊은 겸손과 존경심을 품고 형제들의 시중을 스스로 들었다.

성 도밍고는 그와같은 것을 모두 보고 나자, 진정으로 하느님의 섭리가 이 형제한테 세심한 주의를 기울리고 있음을 확실히 깨달았고, 자기 자신이 프란치스코 성인더러 분별없는 명령을 하는 사람이라고 생각한 것이 잘못이었음을 겸손되이 뉘우쳤다. 그는 성인 앞에 끓어 자기 잘못을 겸허하게 고백하고 덧붙여 이렇게 말했다. “참으로 하느님은 이 작고 가난한 성스러운 사람들을 특별히 돌보고 계시는데도 나는 그것을 알지 못하였습니다. 나는 지금부터 복음의 거룩한 가난을 지킬 것을 약속하며, 내 수도회 안에서 개인 소유물을 갖고자 하는 우리 회 형제들을 모두 하느님의 이름으로 저주합니다.” 이같이 성 도밍고는 참으로 거룩한 프란치스코의 신앙과, 이처럼 크고 질서정연한 모임의 순종과 가난과 또한 하느님의 섭리와 여러 가지 놓은 것들이 풍성함에 깊은 감명을 받았다.

바로 이 총회 때 여러 형제가 맨몸에 고복을 두르고 쇠띠를 띠고 있기 때문에, 많은 이가 병이 들었고 죽은 자도 몇 명 되어 기도할 수 없게 된 이도 많다고 성 프란치스코에게 여쭌 사람이 있었다. 그 말에 성 프란치스코는 참으로 자상한 아버지처럼 거룩한 순종으로 명해서 고복과 쇠띠를 몸에 지니고 있는 사람은 모두 벗어서 자기 앞에 내놓으라고 명령했다. 사람들은 그렇게 하였는데 철로 만든 고복이 오백이나 되고 팔과 허리에 띠었던 쇠띠는 훨씬 더 많았다. 이런 것들이 얼마나 많았던지 산더미를 이루었다. 성 프란치스코는 그것을 전부 그 자리에 남겨두게 하였다.

총회가 끝난 다음 성 프란치스코는 이 악한 세상에서 죄에 물들지 말도록 꾸준히 선행하라고 가르쳤다. 그리고, 하느님의 강복과 자신의 축복을 주어 각각 넘치는 영혼의 기쁨을 가득 안고 자기 관구로 돌아가게 하였다.

주: 1219년에 있었던 이 총회는 작은 형제회의 역사에서 가장 중요한 계기 중의 하나로 간주되어 왔다. 그러나 이 당신 형제회의 형제수는 5,000명이 되지 못했다. 그것은 이 에피소드에 여러 총회들의 사실이 혼합되어 있음을 의미해 준다. 성 프란치스코와 성 도밍고는 1217년과 1218년 사이에 로마에서 만났다.

18. About the Marvelous Chapter That St. Francis Held at St. Mary of the Angels


Once the most faithful servant of Christ, St. Francis, held a General Chapter on the plain at St. Mary of the Angels, where more than five thousand friars gathered together. And St. Dominic, the head and founder of the Order of Friars Preachers, was also there with seven friars of his Order. He was at that time going from Bologna the Rome, and on hearing about the Chapter which St. Francis was holding on the plain at St. Mary of the Angels, he went to see it.

There was also present at that Chapter the Lord Hugolin, Cardinal of Ostia, who was very devoted to St. Francis and his friars. St. Francis prophesied that he would be Pope, and so it happened: he was later the Pope called Gregory the Ninth. As the Court of the Lord Pope was then in Perugia, that Cardinal deliberately came to Assisi, and he used to come every day to see St. Francis and his friars, and sometimes he sang the Mass, and sometimes he gave a sermon to the friars at the Chapter.

The Cardinal felt the greatest delight and inspiration when he came to visit that holy assembly and saw the friars sitting about on the plain around St. Mary in groups of sixty or a hundred or two or three hundred, all occupied only in talking about God or in praying, weeping, or doing deeds of charity. And they were so quiet and meek that there was no sound or noise. And marveling at such a great crowd organized as an army camp, he would say with tears and great devotion: :Truly this is the camp and the army of the knights of God!”

Indeed in all that throng no one was heard telling stories or jokes, but wherever a group of friars gathered, either they prayed or recited the office, or they wept over their own sins or those of their benefactors, or they talked about the salvation of souls.

And in that camp each group had made tents covered on top and round about with rushes and mats; accordingly this Chapter was called the Chapter of Rushes or Mats. They slept on the bare ground or on some straw, and their pillows were stones or pieces of wood.

As a result, everyone who saw or heard them had such devotion for them, and the fame of their holiness was so great, that many people came to see them from the Pope’s court, which was then nearby at Perugia, and from other parts of the Valley of Spoleto. Many counts and barons and knights and other noblemen and many plain people, and cardinals and bishops and abbots with other members of the clergy, flocked to see this very holy and large and humble gathering of so many saintly men, such as the world has never seen. And they came especially to see the venerable leader and such beautiful prey from the world and had gathered such a fine and devout flock to follow in the footsteps of the true shepherd Jesus Christ.

When the entire General Chapter had assembled, St. Francis, the holy Father of all and Minister General, stood up and with fervor of spirit explained the word of God and of life to that holy flock, and-in a loud voice, as clear as a bugle, which divine unction gave him-preached to them whatever the Holy Spirit made him utter. And he took these words as the theme of his sermon: “My little sons, we have promised great things, but far greater things have been promised to us by God. Let us keep those promises which we have made, and let us aspire with confidence to those things that have been promised to us. Brief is the World’s pleasure, but the punishment that follows it lasts forever. Small is the suffering of this life, but the glory of the nest life is infinite.” And preaching very devoutly on these words, he consoled and encouraged all the friars to reverence and obedience to Holy Mother Church and to sweet brotherly love, to pray for all the people of God, to have patience in the adversities of the world and temperance in prosperity, to maintain an angelic purity and chastity, to remain in peace and harmony with God and with men and with their own conscience, to humility and meekness toward all, to the contempt of the world and a love and fervent practice of holy poverty, to care and attention in holy prayer and the praise of God, to place all their hope and anxiety for soul and body in the Good Shepherd who nourishes our bodies and souls: Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ.

And then he said: “In order that you may better observe this, by merit of holy obedience I command all you friars who are gathered here that none of you is to have any care or anxiety concerning anything to eat or drink or the other things necessary for the body but to concentrate only on praying and praising God. And leave all your worries only on praying and praising God. And leave all your worries about your body to Christ, because He takes special care of you.”

And all of them received this order with joy in their hearts and on their faces. And when St. Francis ended his sermon, they all ran and gave themselves to prayer.

But St. Dominic, who was present, was greatly surprised at St. Francis’ command and thought that he was proceeding in an imprudent wasy in ordering that not a single friar in such a large gathering should take any thought regarding things that are necessary for the body, and he thought that such a great crowd would suffer as a result. But the Lord Jesus Christ wanted to show that He takes special care of His sheep and His poor, for by God’s Providence it soon happened that He inspired the people of Perugia, Spoleto, Foligno, Spello, Assisi, and all the surrounding country to bring food and drink to that holy assembly. And all of a sudden men came from those places with many donkeys, mules, and wagons loaded with bread and wine, beans and cheese, and all other good things to eat which they thought those blessed poor men of Christ would need and could use. Moreover, they brought large and small pitchers and grasses and tablecloths and other things which such a crowd would need.

And whoever among them could bring the most supplies or serve most thoughtfully considered himself fortunate to provide for the needs of all in that holy gathering. And you could see the knights and noblemen who came to the meeting gladly and humbly and devoutly serving that assembly of saints. You could see members of the clergy faithfully and eagerly running around everywhere like servants. You could see young men serving with so much reverence that it seemed as though they sere serving, not the poor friars, but the Apostles of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, when St. Dominic saw all this and realized that Divine Providence was acting through them, he humbly reproached himself for having misjudged St. Francis regarding the imprudent order, and he meekly knelt before him and accused himself of his fault, adding.” “God is truly taking care of these holy little poor men, and I did not realize it. Therefore I promise henceforth to observe the holy poverty of the Gospel. And in the name of God I lay a curse upon all the friars of my Order who shall presume to have private property.”

Thus St. Dominic was greatly edified by St. Francis’ faith and the obedience and poverty of such a great and orderly assembly and by Divine Providence and the abundant supply of all good things. For as a truly saintly and wise man he acknowledged in all he said the perfectly faithful Lord who, just as He makes the lilies and plants of the fields grow and He nourishes the birds of the air, also furnishes everything that His devoted poor men need.

During that same Chapter St. Francis was told that many friars were wearing breastplates and iron rings on their flesh, and as a result some had become ill and some were dying, and others were hindered in praying. So St. Francis as a very wise Father commanded under holy obedience that whoever had a breastplate or an iron ring should take it off and deposit it before him. And they did so. And at least five hundred breastplates and many more iron rings worn on the arm or the torso were found, and they formed a large pile. And St. Francis made the friars leave them there.

Later when the Chapter was over, St. Francis instructed and encouraged all of them to do good, and he taught them how to escape without sin from this evil world. And he sent them all back to their provinces comforted and filled with spiritual joy, with God’s blessing and his own.
