제15장

성녀 클라라가 성 프란치스코 및 그의 동료들과 함께 천사의 성 마리아 성당에서 식사한 일

성 프란치스코는 아씨시에 머물러 있는 동안 자주 성녀 클라라를 방문하여 거룩한 교훈을 주었다. 성녀는 성인과 함께 한번 식사하고 싶은 간절한 마음을 품고 몇 번 청해 보았으나 그는 도무지 그 기쁨을 주려고 하지 않았다.

그러던 중 동료들은 성녀 클라라의 소원을 알아차리고 성 프란치스코에게 여쭈었다. “사부님! 저같이 성스럽고 사랑스러운 동정녀 클라라 자매가 함께 식사나 하려는 사소한 일조차도 허락하시지 않는 사부님의 그 엄격은 저희들이 보기에 하느님의 애덕과는 일치하지 않는 것 같습니다. 더욱이 그분은 사부님의 설교를 통해 세속의 부귀영화를 모두 내버린 것을 생각하면 한층 더 그런 생각이 듭니다. 정말 그보다 더 큰 청을 했다 해도 사부님의 작은 영적 딸에게 그런 것쯤이야 들어주셔야 했을 것입니다” 이에 성 프란치스코는 ‘그러면 내가 클라라 자매의 청을 들어주는 것이 좋겠습니까?“하고 물어보았다. 이 말에 동료들은 ”네, 사부님, 그런 위로를 사부님이 클라라 자매에게 준다는 것은 정말 좋은 일이지요“하고 대답했다. 성인은 다시 입을 열어 ”다들 좋아하는 모양이니 나도 그런 생각이 듭니다. 그렇지만 기왕 위로를 줄 바에야, 이 식사를 천사의 성 마리아 수도원에서 하기로 합시다. 그 자매는 오래동안 성 다미아노 수녀원에만 갇혀 있었으니, 자기가 삭발하고 그리스도의 신부가 된, 그 천사의 성 마리아 수도원을 다시 보게 된다면 아주 기뻐할 것입니다. 자 그러면 그곳에서 하느님의 이름으로 식사를 합시다“하였다.

정한 날이 오자 성녀 클라라는 수녀 한 사람을 데리고 수녀원을 나와 성 프란치스코 동료들의 호위를 받으며 천사의 성 마리아 수도원으로 왔다. 성녀는 제대 앞에 있는 동정 마리아상에 경건히 인사를 올리니, 거기가 바로 자기 머리칼을 자르고 수건을 받았던 곳이다. 식사시간이 될 때까지 안내를 받아 수도원 구경을 하고 있는 동안, 성 프란치스코는 늘 하는 습관대로 맨땅 위에 식사 준비를 시켰다.

식사시간이 되자 모두 한자리에 모여 성인과 성녀 클라라가, 또 성인의 동료 하나와 성녀 클라라의 한 동료 자매가 함께 앉고, 다른 동료들도 겸손되이 각각 식탁에 자리잡았다. 첫 음식이 나오자, 성 프란치스코는 아주 감미롭고 감격에 넘친 말로 너무나도 신비스럽게 하느님에 관해 이야기하였으므로, 한없이 천상의 은총이 그들 위에 내리어 모두들 하느님께로 탈혼되고 말았다.

그들이 모두 눈과 손을 하늘로 높이 쳐들고 탈혼에 빠져 있을 때, 아씨시와 뱃토나와 그 근처의 사람들은 천사의 성 마리아 성당과 수도원 전체 그리고 수도원 옆에 있던 나무숲이 온톤 불타고 있는 것을 보았다. 마치 그 새빨갛게 이글이글 타는 불길이 성당도, 숲도, 수도원도 순식간에 전부 휩쓸어 버리는 것처럼 보여, 아씨시 사람들은 틀림없이 모두 다 타버릴 것이라고 생각하곤, 급히 서둘러 불을 끄러 덜려왔다.

그러나 수도원에 막 당도해 보니 불은 하나도 없고, 성 프란치스코가 성녀 클라라 및 그 동료들 모두와 함께 관상 중에 하느님께로 탈혼되어 조촐한 밥상머리에 둘러 앉아 있음을 보게 되었다. 불을 끄러 달려왔던 사람들은 이 엄숙한 광경을 목격하고 그 불은 이 세상 불이 아니라, 하느님께서 거룩한 형제자매들의 영혼에 불붙고 있는 하느님께 대한 사랑을 똑똑히 나타내시기 위해 기적적으로 보여주신 것이었음을 확실히 깨닫고는, 천상적 위로를 가득 안은 채 감동되어 돌아갔다.

한참 후에 성 프란치스코, 성녀 클라라, 그밖의 사람들은 제 정신으로 다시 돌아왔다. 영적 양식으로 이미 힘을 얻는 그들은 그곳에 차려놓은 육신의 음식은 거의 먹지 않았다.

축복된 잔치가 끝난 뒤, 성녀 클라라는 호위를 받으며 성 다미아노 수녀원으로 갔다.

돌아오는 자매들을 보자, 수녀원에 남아 있던 자매들은 크게 기뻐했다. 왜냐하면 성 프란치스코가 이전에도 클라라의 동생 아네스를 피렌체의 폰티첼리 수도원의 원장으로 보낸 것처럼, 성녀 클라라도 다른 수도원을 지도하게 될까 하여 무척 염려하고 있었기 때문이다.

성 프란치스코는 때때로 성녀 클라라에게 “필요한 경우에는 내가 자매를 다른 수도원에 보낼지도 모르니, 그리 알고 있으시오”하고 말한 적이 있었다. 성녀 클라라는 거룩하게 순종하는 딸이었으므로 “사부님, 저는 언제든지 괜찮습니다. 사부님께서 가라고 하는 곳이면 어디든지 가겠습니다”고 대답하곤 했기 때문에, 자매들은 다시 성녀를 자기들 가운데에 모시게 된 것을 매우 기뻐하였던 것이다. 성녀 클라라는 그 후부터 큰 위로를 받으며 살았다.

주: 성녀 클라라는 1212년 성 프란치스코의 뒤를 따른다. 성녀는 처음에 뻐루사의 베네딕또회 수녀원에서 살았고 그 후 스바시오의 어느 다른 수녀원에서 살았다. 그러다가 마침내 성 프란치스코는 제2회를 세우기로 결심했다. 이렇게 해서 세워진 최처의 수녀원은 성 다미아노의 소성당이었고, 여기에서 성녀는 여생을 보냈고 1253년에 세상을 떠났다.

 

 

15. How St. Clare Eat a Meal with St. Francis and His Friars

When St. Francis was staying in Assisi, he often visited St. Clare and consoled her with holy advice. And as she had a very great desire to eat a meal with him once, she asked him several times to give her that consolation. But St. Francis always refused to grant her that favor.

So it happened that his companions, perceiving St. Clare’s desire, said to St. Francis: “Father, it seems to us that this strictness in not according to divine charity-that you do not grant the request of Sister Clare, a virgin so holy and dear to God, in such a little thing as eating with you, especially considering that she gave up the riches and pomp of the world as a result of your preaching. So you should not only let her eat a meal with you once, but if she were to ask an even greater favor of you, you should grant it to your little spiritual plant.”

St. Francis answered: “So you think I should grant this wish of hers?”
And the companions said: “Yes, Father, for she deserves this favor and consolation.”

Then St. Francis replied: “Since it seems so to you, I agree. But in order to give her greater pleasure, I want this meal to be at St. Mary of the Angels, for she has been cloistered at St, Damiano for a long time and she will enjoy seeing once more for a while the Place of St. Mary where she was shorn and made a spouse of the Lord Jesus Christ. So we will eat there together, in the name of the Lord.”

He therefore set a day when St. Clare would go out of the monastery with one sister companion, escorted also by his companions.

And she came to St. Mary of the Angels. And first she reverently and humbly greeted the Blessed Virgin Mary before her altar, where she had been shorn and received the veil. And then they devoutly showed her around the Place until it was mealtime. Meanwhile St. Francis had the table prepared on the bare ground, as was his custom.

And when it was time to eat, St. Francis and St. Clare sat down together, and one of his companions with St. Clare’s companion, and all his other companions were grouped around that humble table. But at the first course St. Francs began to speak about God in such a sweet and holy and profound and divine and marvelous way that he himself and St. Clare and her companion and all the others who were at that poor little table were rapt in God by the overabundance of divine grace that descended upon them.

And while they were sitting there, in a rapture, with their eyes and hands raised to Heaven, it seemed to the men of Assisi and Bettona and the entire district that the Church of St. Mary of the Angels and the whole Place and the forest which was at that time around the Place were all aflame and that an immense fire was burning over all of them. Consequently the men of Assisi ran down there in great haste to save the Place and put out the fire, as they firmly believed that everything was burning up.

But when they reached the Place, they saw that nothing was on fire. Entering the Place, they found St. Francis with St. Clare and all the companions sitting around that very humble table, rapt in God by contemplation and invested with power from on high. Then they knew for sure that it had been a heavenly and not a material fire that God had miraculously shown them to symbolize the fire of divine love which was burning in the souls of those holy friars and nuns. So they withdrew, with great consolation in their hearts and with holy edification.

Later, after a long wile, when St. Francis and St. Clare and the others came back to themselves, they felt so refreshed by spiritual food that they paid little or no attention to the material food. And when that blessed meal was over, St. Clare, well accompanied, returned to San Damiano.

The sisters were very glad to see her, for they had feared that St. Francis might send her to direct some other monastery, as he had already sent her holy sister Agnes to be Abbess of the Monastery of Monticelli in Florence. For at that time St. Francis was sending Sisters out to rule other monasteries. And he had once said to St. Clare: “Be prepared, in case I have to send you somewhere else.” And she had replied like a truly obedient daughter: “Father, I am always ready to go wherever you send me.” And so the sisters rejoiced greatly when they had her back. And henceforth St. Clare was much consoled in the Lord.
