제12장

성 프란치스코가 맛세오 형제에게 현관 직무, 애긍시사, 주방의 일을 한꺼번에 맡기고나서, 다른 형제들이 간청하자 그 일들을 면해준 일

성 프란치스코는 맛세오 형제가 하느님께로부터 받은 여러 가지 은총으로 말미암아 공연히 자만심으로 들뜨지 않고, 오히려 겸손의 미덕 속에 여러 가지 덕행이 자라나도록 하기 위하여 맛세오 형제를 겸손하게 만들려고 마음먹었다.

한번은 성인이 외딴 수도원에서 거룩한 첫 동료들과 함께 살고 있었는데, 맛세오 형제도 그중의 하나였다. 그런데 어느날, 성인은 형제들이 모두 보는 앞에서 “맛세오 형제, 동료들은 보다시피 묵상과 기도의 은총을 받고 있으나. 형제는 하느님의 말씀을 여기 찾아오는 사람들에게 설교해 주는 은총을 받았습니다. 그러나 다른 형제들이 마음놓고 묵상하고 기도할 수 있도록 이제부터 현관 근무, 애긍시사와 주방 근무의 일들을 형제에게 맡기려 합니다. 다른 형제들이 식사할 때에 맛세오 형제는 수도원 문 밖에서 식사하십시오. 그러면 수도원을 찾아오는 사람이 문을 두드리기 전에, 형제가 하느님의 좋은 말씀을 몇마다 해서 그 손님을 기쁘게 할 수 있고, 또 형제 외는 아무도 손님 접대하러 밖에 나갈 필요가 없게 됩니다. 나는 모든 것을 거룩한 순종으로 명하는 바니 그대로 실행하여 주십시오”라고 말했다.

맛세오 형제는 머리를 숙이고 모자를 벗어, 겸손히 그 명을 받아들였고, 충실히 순명했다. 며칠 동안 눈코 뜰 새 없이 현관 근무, 애긍시사, 주방 일들을 잘 해냈다. 그러나 그의 동료들은 하느님으로부터 예지의 빛을 받은 사람들이었으므로, 맛세오 형제가 자기들같이, 혹은 자기들 이상으로 완덕의 사람인데도 수도원의 모든 짐을 그가 혼자서 도맡아 지고 있음을 생각하고 심한 양심의 가책을 느꼈다. 마침내 그들은 서로 합의하여 맛세오 형제가 맡은 일을 자기들에게도 분담해 주시도록 사부님께 찾아가 간청했다. 그들의 양심은 맛세오 형제가 그처럼 무거운 짐을 지고 있는 것을 더 이상 견딜 수 없었기 때문이다.

성 프란치스코는 그 말을 듣고 쾌히 승낙하여 맛세오 형제를 불러 다음과 같이 말했다. “맛세오 형제, 동료들은 내가 형제에게 맡긴 일을 자기들도 함께 나누어 하고 싶어하니, 이제 그 일들을 분담해 주었으면 합니다.” 그러자 맛세오 형제는 아주 겸손하고 온순하게 “사부님, 사부님께서 제게 명하시는 것은 작은 일이든 하느님께서 명하는 것으로 생각합니다”라고 대답하였다.

이렇게 하여 다른 형제들의 애덕과 맛세오 형제의 겸손을 본 성 프란치스코는 그들에게 지극히 거룩한 겸손의 덕에 관하여 훌륭한 설교를 했고, 겸손이 없으면 아무리 훌륭한 덕이라도 하느님 앞에서 아무 가치가 없으며, 하느님께서 주시는 성총과 은총이 크면 클수록, 더욱더 우리는 겸손해져야 한다고 가르쳤다.

설교가 끝나자 성인은 사랑이 넘치는 마음으로 여러 형제들에게 그 일들을 골고루 분담해 주었다.

주: 이 에피소드가 있었던 날짜나 장소를 알 수는 없다. 그러나 여기에서 성인이 그의 형제들에 대해서 가지고 있었던 교육관을 다소 알 수 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

12 How St. Francis Tested Brother Masseo’s Humility


St. Francis wished to humble Brother Masseo, in order that pride should not lift him up because of the many gifts and graces which God gave him, but that he should advance from virtue to virtue by means of humility. And one day when he was staying at a solitary Place with those truly saintly first companions of his, among whom was Brother Masseo, he said to him before all the others: “Brother Masseo, all these companions of yours have the grace of prayer and contemplation, but you have the grace of preaching the word of God the satisfy the people who come here. Therefore, so that the friars may give themselves better to prayer and contemplation, I want you to take care of opening the gate, giving out alms, and cooking the meals. And when the friars are eating, you are to eat outside the gate of the Place, so that you may satisfy with a few good devout words the people who come to the Place before they knock at the gate. Thus no one else need go out to them except you. And you are to do this by merit of holy obedience.”

Then Brother Masseo immediately bowed his head, lowering his cowl, and humbly accepted and faithfully obeyed this order. For several days he served as gatekeeper, almsgiver, and cook.

But his companions, as man enlightened by God, began to feel intense remorse in their hearts, reflecting that Brother Masseo was a man of great perfection and prayer, like themselves or even more so, and yet the whole burden of the Place was put on him and not on them. Consequently they agreed among themselves, and they want to ask their holy Father that he should kindly distribute the duties among them, because their consciences simply could not bear having Brother burdened with so much work. Furthermore, they felt that they would be cold in their prayers and troubled in their consciences if Brother Masseo were not relieved of those duties.

On hearing this, St. Francis agreed to their charitable suggestion. And calling Brother Masseo, he said to him: “Brother Masseo, these companions of yours want to share in the duties I gave you, and so I want those duties to be divided among them.”

And Brother Masseo said very humble and patiently: “Whatever you impose on me-either in part or in whole- I consider it done by God.”

Then St. Francis, seeing their charity and Brother Masseo’s humility, gave them a wonderful sermon on holy humility, teaching them that the greater the gifts and graces which God gives us, the greater is our obligation to be more humble, because without humility no virtue is acceptable to God. And among them with great affection and gave all of them a blessing by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
