제 13장

성 프란치스코와 맛세오 형제가 구걸해온 빵을 샘가 바위 위에 내려놓고 성 프란치스코가 가난을 크게 찬미한 일, 그리고 성 베드로와 성 바오로 사도께서 성인께 발현한 이야기

그리스도의 놀라운 종이요, 그 제자인 성 프란치스코는 모든 점에서 그리스도를 완전히 닮으려 했던 분이었으므로, 그리스도께서 당신이 가려는 도시와 마을에 먼저 사도들을 둘씩 짝지어 보내셨던 것과 같이, 사부님도 그리스도의 모범을 따라 열 두 동료들을 한자리에 불러 모으고 이들을 둘씩 짝지어, 온 세상에 복음을 전파하도록 내보냈다. 그리고 그들에게 참된 순종의 본을 보여주고자, 자신이 먼저 행하시고 후에 가르치신 그리스도를 역시 본받기 위해서였다.

성인은 동료 형제들을 세상 여러 곳에 가도록 명하고 난 뒤, 맛세오 형제를 데리고 프랑스로 향해 길을 떠났다.

어느날 한 마을에 들어선 두 사람은 몹시 지치고 시장하였다. 그들은 회칙대로 하느님 사랑에 호소하여 빵을 구걸하러 돌아다니기로 하고, 성 프란치스코와 맛세오 형제는 서로 헤어졌다. 그런데 성인은 몸집도 작고 볼품도 없는 사람이었으므로, 그를 모르는 사람들에게는 천한 걸인으로밖에 보이지 않았기 때문에, 몇입 안되는 음식과 말라빠진 빵조각 몇 개를 얻었을 뿐이었다. 그러나 맛세오 형제는 체격이 크고 풍채가 당당하였으므로 크고 맛있는 빵덩이리와 새로 만든 빵을 여러개 얻어가지고 왔다.

구걸을 마친 그들은 식사를 하러 마을 밖 한 곳에 이르니 맑은 샘이 솟고 옆에는 널찍한 바위가 있었다. 두 사람은 구걸해온 것을 모두 그 위에 올려놓았다. 성인은 맛세오 형제의 빵이 자기 것보다 분량도 많고 더 크고 좋은 것을 보고 매우 기뻐하며 말하였다. “맛세오 형제여, 우리는 이런 훌륭한 보물을 받을 가치가 없습니다.”

성인이 이 말을 자꾸 되풀이하므로 맛세오 형제는 “사부님! 이처럼 가난하고 부족한 것뿐인데 왜 보물이라고 하십니까? 여기에는 집도, 밥상도, 식탁보도 없으며, 더구나 칼도, 접시도, 시중꾼도, 하녀도 없는데···”하고 의아해하였다.

그러자 성 프란치스코는 이렇게 말했다. “바로 그렇기 때문에 훌륭한 보물이라고 하는 겁니다. 여기에는 사람의 힘으로 만든 것이라고는 아무것도 없으며 있는 것이라고는 모두가 하느님의 섭리로 만들어진 것뿐입니다. 구걸해온 빵과, 깨끗한 바위로 된 밥상과, 맑고 시원한 샘을 보더라도 충분히 깨달을 수 있을 것입니다. 그러니 우리는 그 고귀한 보물, 즉 하느님께서 시중드시는 지극히 거룩한 가난을 진심으로 사랑하게 해달라고 하느님께 간청합시다.” 이와같은 이야기를 주고받은 다음, 기도를 바치고 나서 그 빵을 막고 샘물을 마셨다.

식사를 마친 두 사람은 다시 일어나 기쁜 노래로 주님을 찬미하면서 프랑스에 가는 길로 발걸음을 옮겼다. 한참 가다가 어떤 성당에 도착했다. 성 프란치스코는 맛세오 형제에게 “ 이 성당에 들어가 기도합시다”하고 말하고는 제단 뒤로 들어가 기도에 잠겼다. 그는 하느님의 환시와 방문을 받았는데, 이때 하느님은 그의 영혼을 거룩한 가난에 대한 강렬한 열망과 사랑으로 송두리째 불태워 버렸다. 그래서 그의 상기된 얼굴과 더듬거리는 입에서는 금방 사랑의 불꽃이 툭툭 튀어나오는 것 같았다. 이처럼 사랑에 불타는 마음으로 성인은 동료 옆에 와서 힘있게 “···아아···, 아아 ···· 맛세오 형제여, 형제의 몸을 나에게 맡기시오”라고 반복하였다.

맛세오 형제는 그 열정에 몹시 놀라 세 번째로 “내게 몸을 맡기시오”라고 할 때, 거룩한 사부님의 팔에 몸을 던졌다.

그랬더니 성 프란치스코는 입을 크게 벌리고 큰 소리로 “아! 아! 아!”라고만 하며, 성령의 힘을 통하여 맛세오 형제를 마침내 공중에 불어 올려 길다란 창의 높이만큼 떠오르게 하였다.

맛세오 형제는 그만 질겁을하여 안색이 변했으나, 성 프란치스코가 입김으로 자기를 불어 올렸을 적에 일생동안 다시는 맛볼 수 없는 커다란 즐거움과 위안을 느꼈다고 훗날 다른 형제들에게 말하곤 하였다.

이런 일이 있은 후, 성 프란치스코는 “사랑하는 나의 형제여, 성 베드로와 성 바오로 앞으로 가서 거룩한 가난의 무한한 보물을 잃지 않도록 도움을 청합시다. 그것은 대단히 신성하고 귀중한 보물로서 우리같이 천한 그릇에 담아두기에는 너무나 합당치 않습니다. 사실 그것은 천상에서 오는 덕입니다. 우리는 이 보물로 땅 위의 온갖 허무한 것을 짓밟아 버리며, 또 이 고귀한 보물로써 우리 영혼의 모든 방해물을 없이하여 자유로이 영원하신 하느님과 일치할 수 있게 됩니다. 이것이야말로 아직도 이 땅에 발이 묶여 있는 영혼이 하늘의 천사들과 서로 대화할 수 있게 해주는 덕인 것입니다. 이 가난이야말로 십자가 위의 그리스도를 따라갔으며, 그리스도와 함께 부활하여 그리스도와 함께 하늘에 올라갔다. 또한 현세에서라도 가난을 사랑하는 영혼에게는 천상으로 날아갈 힘을 주고 이 가난만이 홀로 참된 겸손과 애덕의 무기를 지켜주기 때문이다. 그러므로 이 복음적 진주를 더없이 사랑하신 가장 거룩한 사도들에게 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이 성총을 구해 주시도록, 즉 주님의 지극하신 자비에 의해서, 우리가 이 소중하고 사랑스러운 복음적 가난의 참된 애인이요, 실천자요, 겸손의 제자가 될 수 있도록 간청합시다”라고 말하였다.

그런 이야기를 주고받는 사이에 두 사람은 로마에 도착하여 성 베드로 대성전에 들아갔다. 성인은 성당 이쪽에서, 맛세오 형제는 저쪽 구석에서 각각 기도드렸다.

오래동안 많은 눈물을 흘리면서 경건한 기도를 드리고 있을 때, 성스러운 베드로, 바오로 두 사도가 거대한 광채에 싸여 성 프란치스코에게 발현하시어 “너는 그리스도와 그의 거룩한 사도들이 실천했던 것을 똑같이 실천하기를 원해 왔으므로, 우리 주 그리스도께서 너의 원을 기꺼이 들어주셨음을 알려주도록 우리를 보내셨다. 곧 지극히 거룩하고 완전한 가난의 보물이 너와 너를 따르는 제자들에게 주어졌다. 그리고 우리는 그리스도의 이름으로 또 한 가지를 알려주노니, 누구든지 네 모범을 따라 이 열망을 완전히 실행하는 사람은 모두 영원한 행복과 생명이 주어지리라. 너와 너의 작은 형제들은 하느님의 축복을 받으리라.” 이같이 말씀하신 뒤, 성 프란치스코에게 큰 위안을 남기고 두 사도께서는 사라졌다.

성인은 기도를 마치고 일어나 맛세오 형제에게 다가가서, 하느님의 계시를 받은 것이 아무것도 없느냐고 물었으나, 그는 없었다고 대답하므로 성 프란치스코는 거룩한 사도께서 발현한 모습과 그분들의 말씀을 자세히 이야기해 주었다. 두 사람은 기쁨을 한 아름 안고 프랑스로 가려던 계획을 포기하고 스뽈레또 골짜기로 다시 돌아가기로 했다.

주: 이 에피소드는 형제회의 초창기에 있었던 듯하다. 성 프란치스코는 즉시 형제들을 그룹으로 나누어 여러 곳으로 파송했다. 성인 자신도 1217년 프랑스에 갔엇다.

 

13 How St. Francis Lifted Brother Masseo in the Air, and How St. Peter and St. Paul Appeared to St. Francis.


Just as Christ according to the Gospels, sent His disciples, two by two, to all the towns and places where He was to go Himself, so St. Francis, the wonderful servant of God and true follower of Christ, in order to conform himself perfectly to Christ in all things, after he had gathered twelve companions, following Christ’s example sent them out in groups of two to preach to the world. And to give them an example of true obedience, he himself was the first to go. Following the precedent of Christ who first practiced what He taught. Therefore, after he had assigned various other parts of the world to his friars, taking Brother Masseo as his companion, he set out on the road toward the Province of France.

And one day when they came to a village and they were quite hungry, they went begging for bread for the love of God, according to the Rule. And St. Francis went along one street and Brother Masseo along another. But because St. Francis was a very small and insignificant-looking man, and therefore was considered a common little pauper by nearly all who did not know him-for human foolishness judges not what is inside but only externals-he received nothing but a few mouthfuls of food and some small pieces of dry bread. But to Brother Masseo, because he was a tall handsome man, people gave plenty of good large pieces and some whole loaves.

When they had finished begging, the two came together to eat somewhere outside the village. They found nothing but the dry ground to put their begged food on, because that region was quite bare of stones. However, with God’s help they came to a spring, and beside it there was a fine broad stone, which made them very happy. And each of them placed on the stone all the pieces of bread he had acquired. And when St. Francis saw that Brother Masseo’s pieces of bread were more numerous and better and bigger than his, he was filled with intense joy because of his longing for poverty, and he said: “Oh, Brother Masseo, we do not deserve such a great treasure as this!” and he repeated those words several times, raising his voice each time.

Brother Masseo replied: “Dear Father, how can this be called a treasure when there is such poverty and such a lack of things that are necessary” For here we have no cloth, no knife, no dish, no bowl, no house, no table, no waiter, no waitress.”

St. Francis answered: “That is what I consider a great treasure-where nothing has been prepared by human labor. But everything here has been supplied by Divine Providence, as is evident in the begged bread, the fine stone table, and the clear spring. Therefore, I want us to pray to God that He may make us love with all our hearts the very noble treasure of holy poverty, which has God as provider.”

And after he had said those words and they had prayed and eaten the pieces of bread and drunk the spring-water, they arose to travel on toward France, rejoicing and praising the Lord in song.

And when they came to a certain church, St. Francis said to his companion: “Let’s go in and hear Mass and pray there.” And they entered. But as the priest was absent, St. Francis went and hid himself behind the altar to pray. And while he was praying there, he was given a divine vision and visitation which wholly inflamed his soul with such an intense longing and love for holy poverty that flames of love seemed to issue from his face and mouth.

And going out to his companion, all afire with love, he said forcefully: “Ah! Ah! Ah! Brother Masseo, give yourself to me!”

And he said it three times. And Brother Masseo, greatly amazed at his fervor, threw himself into the holy Father’s arms when he said for the third time: “Give yourself to me!”

Then St. Francis, with his mouth wide open and repeating very loudly ‘Ah! Ah! Ah!”, by the power of the Holy Spirit lifted Brother Masseo up in the air with his breath and projected him forward the length of a long spear.

Brother Masseo was completely astounded. And later he told his companions that he had experienced such spiritual consolation and sweetness in being raised up and projected by the breath of St. Francis that he did not recall ever having had such a great consolation in all his life.

Afterward, St. Francis said to Brother Masseo: “My dear companion, let us go to Rome, to St. Peter and St. Paul, and let us pray to them to teach us and help us to possess the infinite treasure of holy poverty.”

And St. Francis added: “My dear and beloved Brother, the treasure of blessed poverty is so very precious and divine that we are not worth to possess it in our vile bodies. For poverty is that heavenly virtue by which all earthly and transitory things are trodden under foot, and by which every obstacle is with the eternal Lord God. It is also the virtue which makes the soul, while still here on earth, converse with the angels in Heaven. It is she who accompanied Christ on the Cross, was buried with Christ in the Tomb, and with Christ was raised and ascended into Heaven, for even in this life she gives to souls who love her the ability to fly to Heaven, and she alone guards the armor of true humility and charity, So let us pray to the very holy Apostles of Christ, who were perfect lovers of the pearl of the Gospel, that they may procure this grace for us from Our Lord Jesus Christ: that He who was an observer and teacher of holy poverty may by His most holy mercy grant that we may be worthy to be true lovers and observers and humble followers of the most precious and beloved poverty of the Gospel.”

When they arrived in Rome, conversing like that, they entered St. Peter’s Church. And St. Francis went into one corner of the church and Brother Masseo to another, to pray to God and His holy Apostles that they might instruct and help them to possess the treasure of holy poverty. And they prayed for it a long time with great devotion and many tears. And while they were persisting humbly in prayer, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul appeared in great splendor to St. Francis. And embracing and kissing him they said: “Brother Francis, because you request and desire to observe what Christ and the holy Apostles observed, Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself has sent us to announce to you that your desire is fulfilled and your prayer is answered, and that the treasure of very holy poverty is perfectly granted to you and your followers. And on behalf of Christ we say to you that whoever by your example perfectly follows this desire shall be assured of the happiness of everlasting life. And you and all your followers shall be blessed by Go.” And after saying those words they disappeared, leaving St. Francis full of consolation.

Rising from prayer, he went to his companion and asked him whether God had revealed anything to him. And he answered: “No.” Then St. Francis told him how the holy Apostles had appeared to him and what they had revealed to him. And both of them were so overwhelmed with joy and happiness that they forgot to go to France, as they had first intended, but they hastened to return to the Valley of Spoleto, where this heavenly and angelical way of life was to begin.
