제11장

성 프란치스코가 맛세오 형제를 빙글빙글 돌게 한 다음 시에나로 출발한 일

하루는 성 프란치스코가 맛세오 형제를 데리고 길을 가고 있었다. 맛세오 형제는 조금 앞서 가다가 피렌체와 시에나와 아렛조의 세 곳으로 갈라지는 네거리에 당도하자. “사부님 어느 길로 가야 합니까?”하고 물었다. 성 프란치스코는 “하느님께서 원하시는 길로·····”라고 대답하였다.

맛세오 형제는 다시, “그러면 어떻게 하느님의 뜻을 알 수 있습니까?”하고 물으니 성인은 이렇게 말했다. “내가 그 방법을 알려주겠습니다···· 이제 거룩한 순종으로 명하니, 형제가 서있는 이 네거리에서 아이들처럼 혼자 빙글빙글 도십시오. 그리고 내가 말할 때까지 그치지 말고 계속 도시오.” 맛세오 형제는 빙글빙글 돌기 시작하였다. 얼마나 많이 돌았던지 이런 운동에 으레 생기게 되는 현기증 때문에 몇 번이나 땅에 쓰러지곤 하였다. 성인은 좀처럼 멈추라는 말을 안했으나, 이 형제는 충실하게 순명하려고 다시 일어나서 돌고, 돌다가 쓰러지면 또다시 일어나서 돌곤 하였다. 마침내 그가 가장 빨리 돌고 있는 순간, 성 프란치스코는 “그만, 더 움직이지 마시오!”라고 말하여, 그는 딱 멈추어 섰다.

성인이 “어느 쪽에 얼굴을 향하고 있습니까?” 하고 물으니, 맛세오 형제는 “시에나 쪽입니다”하고 대답하였다. 성 프란치스코는 “그 길이 바로 하느님께서 우리가 가기를 원하시는 길이오”라고 말했다.

맛세오 형제는 많은 사람들이 오고가는 앞에서 성인이 자기를 빙글빙글 돌라고 명한 것은 좀 이상하다고 생각되었지만, 감히 한마디도 묻지 않았다.

두 사람이 시에나에 가까이 오자, 시민들이 성인이 오신다는 소문을 듣고 마중을 나와 경의의 표시로 성인과 그 형제를 주교관까지 어깨에 높이 떠메고 갔다. 그런데 마침 바로 그 시간에 시에나에서는 어떤 사람들간에 싸움이 벌어져 이미 두 사람은 죽어 있었다.

이때 성 프란치스코는 그들 가운데 뛰어들어가 참으로 감동적인 설교를 하였으므로, 마침내 그들은 화평을 되찾았고, 서로 단결하여 화목하게 지냈다.

시에나의 주교는 성 프란치스코가 이룬 이 거룩한 업적을 듣고, 주교관으로 초대하여 그날 밤도 그곳에서 지내도록 했다.

겸손 그 자체이며 오직 하느님의 영광만을 찾아 일하는 성 프란치스코는, 다음날 아침 자기 동료와 함께 일찍 일어나 주교가 모르는 사이에 아무 말도 없이 떠나버렸다. 그 때문에 맛세오 형제는 길을 가면서 속으로 “이분은 정말 이상하지 않은가? 내게는 아이들 모양 빙글빙글 돌게 하고, 그처럼 융숭하게 대접해 준 주교님에게는 감사하다는 말 한마다도 없이 떠나왔으니···”하고 투덜댔다. 맛세오 형제에게는 성인의 행동이 좀 경솔하게 보였다.

그러나 그는 하느님께 영감을 받아 마음이 가라앉자, 마음속으로 자신을 책망하였다. “맛세오, 너는 정말 교만한 놈이구나, 하느님이 하시는 일을 시비하다니, 네놈이야말로 그 주책없는 교만 때문에 지옥에 떨어질 놈이다. 어제 프란치스코 형제가 보여준 거룩한 행동은 만약 하느님의 천사가 하였더라면 그보다 더 훌륭히는 못하였으리라. 그러므로 이분이 돌을 던지라 명하셨어도 너는 잠자코 순명해야 한다. 이와같이 좋은 결과가 난 것을  이분이 여행 중 하신 모든 일은 하느님의 뜻으로 된 것이 틀림없다. 이분이 서로 싸우는 사람들을 화해시키지 않았더라면 이미 벌어진 대로 많은 사람들이 칼에 맞아 죽었을 뿐만 아니라, 마귀도 또한 많은 영혼들을 지옥으로 끌고 갔으리라. 그러므로 분명히 하느님의 뜻에서 나온 일을 불평하는 너야말로 참으로 바보요, 교만덩어리인 것이다.”

맛세오 형제가 앞장서 가며 마음속으로 이같이 혼자 속삭인 것은 모두 성 프란치스코에게 계시되었다. 성인은 그에게 다가가면서 다음과 같이 말했다. “지금 형제가 생각하고 있는 것은 매우 훌륭하고 유익한 것입니다. 그것은 하느님께서 불어넣어 주신 생각이니 잊지 말고 마음에 잘 간직하십시오. 그러나 조금 전에 투덜댄 것은 맹목적이고, 나쁘고, 교만한 것으로 악마가 형제의 영혼에다 심어놓은 것입니다..” 맛세오 형제는 성 프란치스코가 자기 마음의 비밀을 알고 있으며 천상적 상지의 영이 모든 행동에 있어서 거룩한 사부님을 일일이 인도해 주고 있다는 것을 분명히 깨달았다.

주: 성 프란치스코는 여러번 시에나에 가 있었다. 이 에피소드는 아마도 성인이 그곳에 가 있던 1212년에 있었던 것 같다. 도시의 여러 문벌들이 종종 자기네들끼리 싸웠던 것이 사실이다.

 

 

 

 

 

11. How St. Francis Made Brother Masseo Twirl Around


Once St. Francis was traveling in Tuscany with Brother Masseo, whom he most willingly used to take along as his companion because of his pleasant conversation and unusual discretion and because of the help which he gave him in his raptures by dealing with people and hiding him from them, so that they should not disturb him.

One day they were walking along a road together, with Brother Masseo going a bit ahead of St. Francis. But when they came to a crossroad where three roads met, where they could go to Siena or Florence or Arezzo, Brother Masseo said: “Father, which road should we take?”

Brother Masseo said: “How will we be able to know God’s will?”

St. Francis answered: “By the sign I will show you. Now under the merit of holy obedience I command you to twirl around in this crossroad, right where you are standing, just as children do, and not to stop turning until I tell you.”

So Brother Masseo obediently began to turn around, and he twirled around so long that he fell down several times from dizziness in his head, which usually results from such turning. But as St. Francis did not tell him to stop, and he wanted to obey faithfully, he got up again and resumed his gyrations.

Finally, after he had been twirling around bravely for a long time, St. Francis said: “Stand still! Don’t move!”

And he stood still. And St. Francis asked him: “What direction are you facing?”
Brother Masseo replied: “Toward Siena.”

And St. Francis said: “That is the road God wants us to take.”


While they were going along that road, Brother Masseo marveled very much over St. Francis’ having made him twirl around in such a childish way before all the lay people who were passing by. However, because of his reverence for the Saint, he did not dare say anything to him about it.

When they drew near to Siena and the people of the city heard that St. Francis was arriving, they came out to meet him And out of devotion they carried him and his companion under the arms to the Bishop’s mansion, so that their feet hardly touched the ground all the way.

Now at that same hour some citizens of Siena were fighting together, and two of them had already been killed. So St. Francis went there and stood up and preached to those men in such a beautiful and holy way that he brought all of them back to peace and great unity and harmony.

And When the Bishop of Siena heard about the wonderful deed which St. Francis had performed, he invited him into his house and made him welcome that day and also overnight.

The next morning the truly humble St. Francis, who sought nothing but the glory of God in his actions, got up early with his companion and left without the Bishop’s knowing it.

Brother Masseo murmured at this as they went along the road, saying to himself: “What has this good man done? Yesterday he made me twirl round like a child, and today he did not say one good word or express his thanks to the Bishop who honored him so much!”

And it seemed to Brother Masseo that St. Francis had acted indiscreetly. But then, by an inspiration from God, he came back to his senses and reproached himself severely in his heart: “Brother Masseo, you are too proud, passing judgment on the work of divine grace, and you deserve hell for revolting against God with your indiscreet pride! For yesterday on this journey Brother Francis performed such holy deeds that they would not be more marvelous if an angel had done them. So if he should order you to throw stones, you should obey him. For all that he did on this journey was the work of God, as is shown by the good results that followed. Because if he had not made peace between those men who were fighting, not only would the sword have slain many bodies, as it had already begun to do, but-what is still worse-many souls would have been thrown into hell by the devil. And so you are very stupid and proud for murmuring against what was clearly the will of God.”

Now all these things which Brother Masseo was pondering in his heart as he walked along a bit ahead of St. Francis were revealed to the latter by the Holy Spirit, to whom all things are bare and open. And calling Brother Masseo, the Saint came up to him and disclosed the secret thoughts of Masseo’s heart by saying to him: “Hold to the thoughts which you are thinking now, for they are good and helpful to you and inspired by God. But the complaining that you did before was blind and evil and proud and was planted in your soul by the devil.”

On hearing this, Brother Masseo was astounded, and he clearly realized that St. Francis knew the secrets of his heart, and he understood with certainty that the Spirit of divine wisdom and grace guided St. Francis in all his actions.

To the praise and glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
