제10장 

맛세오 형제가 반 농담삼아 온 세상이 성인을 따르고 있다고 말하자. 성 프란치스코는 그것은 세상의 수치요, 실상은 하느님의 은총에 의한 것이라고 대답한 일

언젠가 성 프란치스코는 천사의 성 마리아 수도원에서 마리냐노의 맛세오 형제와 함께 지냈다. 맛세오 형제는 성덕이 높고 지혜로운 사람이었으며 더욱이 하느님의 사정을 이야기하는 데는 천부의 은총을 지니고 있었다. 성 프란치스코가 숲속에서 기도를 끝내고 숲 어귀에 나와 있는데, 맛세오 형제는 성인의 겸손을 시험해 보려고 마중나와서는 농담조로 “왜 당신을····, 왜 당신을 ····, 왜 당신을···,”하고 말하니, 성 프란치스코는 “그 말이 무슨 뜻입니까?”하고 물었다. 맛세오 형제는 “왜 세상은 당신을 따라가며, 또 왜 누구나 다 당신을 보고 싶어하고, 당신의 말씀을 들으려 하며, 그것을 순종하려 합니까? 당신은 미남도 아니고, 학식이 별로 있는 것도 아니고 또 귀족도 아닌데, 왜 온 세상이 당신을 그처럼 따르는 것입니까?”하고 말했다.

이 말을 듣자 성 프란치스코는 환희로 부풀어 얼굴을 하늘로 향하고 하느님께 몰두되어 오래동안 그대로 서 있었다. 제 정신으로 돌아온 성인은 무릎을 꿇고 하느님께 찬미와 감사를 드린 후, 타오르는 열정에 넘쳐 맛세오 형제를 돌아보며 이렇게 말했다. “왜 그런지 알고 싶습니까? 왜 그런지 알고 싶습니까? 모든 사람이 나를 쫓아오는 그 이유를 형제는 정말 알고 싶습니까? 이것은 온 세상에 있는 모든 의인과 악인을 내려다보시는 지극히 거룩하신 그 눈이 모든 죄인들 가운데서 나보다도 더 천하고, 더 부족하고, 더 큰 죄인을 보시지 못했기 때문입니다. 하느님은 당신이 하시고자 하는 그 놀라운 일을 위해서, 그 이상 더 천한 피조물을 찾지 못하셨기에 나를 택하시어 이 세상의 존귀한 자, 아름다운 자, 강한 자, 지혜로운 자를 부끄럽게 하시고, 그래서 만선만덕은 창조주 하느님께로부터 오는 것이지 결코 피조물에게서 오는 것이 아니며, 누구도 하느님 앞에서 자랑할 수 없다는 것을 보여주기 위해서입니다. 자랑하는 자는 영광과 존귀를 영원무궁토록 받으실 주님 안에서 자랑할 것입니다.”

열정적으로, 그리고 그렇게도 겸손히 성인께서 대답하는 것을 본 맛세오 형제는 깊은 감동을 받았고, 성 프란치스코야말로 참된 겸손 위에 굳건히 서 있는 분임을 확신하게 되었다.

주: 맛세오 형제는 형제회의 또하나의 중요 인물이다. 그는 "잔 꽃송이"에서 가장 독특하고 활달한 인물이며 10,11,12,13,32,39장... 등에서 나온다. 1221년에 입회했으며 훤출한 키에 미남이었다. 그의 대화는 언제나 흥미진진했으나, 약간 교만한 흠을 지니고 있었다. 성 프란치스코는 그를 겸손하게 하려고 애썼다. 1280년에 세상을 떠났다.

        

 

 

 

 

10. How Brother Masseo Tested St. Francis’ Humility.


Once St. Francis was staying at the Place of Portiuncula with Brother Masseo of Marignano. A man of great holiness and discernment and grace in speaking about God, because of which St. Francis loved him very much.

One day when St. Francis was coming back from the woods, where he had been prying, and was at the edge of the forest, Brother Masseo went to meet him as he wanted to find out how humble he was, and he said to St. Francis, half jokingly: “Why after you? Why do you mean, Brother Masseo?”

“I mean, who does all the world seem to be running after you, and everyone seems to want to see you and hear you and obey you? You are not a handsome man. You do not have great learning or wisdom. You are not a nobleman. So why is all the world running after you?”

On hearing this, St. Francis rejoice greatly in spirit, and he raised his face toward Heaven and stood for a long time with his mind absorbed in God.

Coming back to himself, he genuflected and praised and gave thanks to God. Then with great fervor of spirit he turned to Brother Masseo and said: “You want to know why after me? You really want to know why everyone is running after me? I have this from the all-holy eyes of God that see the good and the evil everywhere. For those blessed and all-holy eyes have not seen among sinners anyone more vile or insufficient than I am. And so in order to do that wonderful work which he intends to do,

He did not find on earth a viler creature, and therefore He chose me, for God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, ad God has chosen the base things of the world and the despised, to bring to naught the noble and great an strong, so that all excellence in virtue may be from God and not from the creature, in order that no creature should glory before Him, but ‘let him who takes pride, take pride in the Lord,’ that honor and glory may be only God’s forever.”

Then Brother Masseo, at such a humble answer spoken with such fervor, was deeply moved and knew for sure that St. Francis was grounded in true humility, as a true and humble disciple of Christ.
