제8장

성 프란치스코가 레오 형제와 함께 길을 가면서 참된 기쁨을 가르쳐 준 일

성 프란치스코가 어느 겨울날 레오 형제와 함께 페루지아로부터 천사의 성 마리아 성당으로 향해 가고 있었는데, 살을 베어내는 듯한 추위 때문에 몹시 고통을 당하고 있을 때였다. 성인은 조금 앞서 가던 레오 형제를 불러 “레오 형제여, 가령 작은 형제들이 가는 곳마다 성덕과 감화의 훌륭한 모범을 보여준다 하여도, 그러나 그런 것은 완전한 기쁨이 되지 않는다고 잘 기록해 놓으시오”하고 말했다.

조금 더 걷다가 성 프란치스코는 그를 두 번째로 다시 부르며 “레오 형제여, 가령 작은 형제가 소경을 눈뜨게 하고, 꼽추를 고쳐주고, 마귀를 내쫓고, 귀머거리를 듣게 하고, 앉은뱅이를 걷게 하고 벙어리를 말하게 하고, 더 위대한 일로 죽은지 나흘된 사람까지도 부활시킨다 할지라도, 그러한 것은 완전한 기쁨이 되지 않는다고 잘 기록해 놓으시오”하고 말했다.

또 좀 더 가다가 성 프란치스코는 큰소리로 이렇게 말했다. “레오 형제여, 가령 작은 형제가 모든 나라 말과 온갖 지식과 만가지 책에 능통하고 장래 일뿐만 아니라. 인간 양심의 비밀까지 뚫어 볼 수 있다 하여도 그러한 것이 완전한 기쁨이 되지 않는다고 잘 기록해 놓으시오,”

그리고 또 좀 더 가다가 성 프란치스코는 다시 큰소리로 불렀다. “하느님의 어린양 레오 형제여, 가령 작은 형제기 천사들의 말을 하고 별의 궤도와 약초의 효력을 알고 또 땅의 보물을 다 찾아내게 되고, 새와 물고기와 온갖 짐승, 사람, 돌, 초목의 뿌리와 물의 효능을 알고 있다 하여도 그러한 것이 완전한 기쁨이 되지 않는다고 잘 기록해 놓으시오.”

좀 더 걸어가다가, 성 프란치스코는 큰 소리로 “레오 형제여, 가령 작은 형제가 전교에 아주 능하여 이교도 불신자들을 모두 개심시켜 그리스도의 신앙으로 이끌어들인다 하여도, 잘 기록해 두시오, 그러한 것이 완전한 기쁨이 되지 않습니다.”

3Km 족히 되는 거리를 걸어가면서 이런 이야기를 계속하니, 레오 형제는 몹시 놀라 “사부님, 그렇다면 참된 기쁨이 어디에 있는지 가르쳐 주십시오”하고 물으니, 성 프란치스코는 대답하기를 “우리가 비에 젖고, 추위에 얼고, 진창에 빠져 형편없이 되고 배고파 기진맥진하여 천사의 성 마리아 성당에 도착해 수도원 문을 두드릴 때, 문지기가 화를 내며 ‘당신들은 누구요?’하고 묻고, 그때 ‘당신들의 형제 두 사람입니다’하고 대답하면, 문지기가 말하기를 ‘거짓말 마라, 너희들은 사방을 돌아다니며 세상을 속이고 가난한 사람이 구걸한 것을 빼앗아 먹는 두 두명의 악당이지? 썩물러가러라!’ 그리고는 문도 열어주니 않고, 추위와 굶주림을 거들떠보지도 않고, 바깥 쏟아지는 빗속에 우리를 밤중까지 내버려 둘 때 그런 욕설, 인정없는 무자비한 대우, 매정한 거절도 우리가 인내로써 달게 받고 그 사람과 맞서서 싸우거나 불평하지 않고 겸손히 애덕으로 ‘문지기가 말한 것은 정말이다. 우리에게 그렇게 말하도록 하느님께서 시킨 것이다’라고 생각한다면 레오 형제여! 그것이 바로 완전한 기쁨이라고 기록해 놓으시오. 그리고 우리가 끝내 문을 두드리면 문지기가 더 화를 내며 튀어나와 우리가 나쁜 불량배나 되듯이 욕설을 퍼붓고 뺨을 때려 내쫓으며 ‘여기서 썩 물러가지 못해? 이 더러운 도둑놈들아! 병원(그 근처에 있던 나병환자 병원을 말함)에나 찾아가! 여기서는 먹여주지도 재워주지도 않는다! 하고 말하게 될 때, 우리가 만약 애덕의 숭고한 정신에서 인내와 기쁨으로 이 모든 것을 달게 참아 받아낸다면, 레오 형제여! 그것이 완전한 기쁨이라고 기록해 놓으시오. 그리고 우리가 긂주림과 추위와 어둠 때문에 하는 수 없이 다시 문을 두드리고 울부짖으며, 제발 문 좀 열어달라고 애원할 때 그는 화가 머리끝까지 치밀어 ’이 파렴치족들, 혼 좀 나봐라‘하고 고함치며 옹이가 가득 배인 몽둥이를 들고 나와 수도복의 모자를 잡아쥐고는 우리를 땅에 내동댕이쳐, 눈 속에 굴리며 몽둥이의 옹이로 사정없이 매질한다고 할 때, 그래도 우리가 이 모든 것을 달게 참아 받고 복되신 그리스도의 가난을 생각하고 즐거워한다면 레오 형제여! 그런 것이 완전한 기쁨이라고 기록해 놓으시오. 레오 형제여, 자 이제 결론을 들어보시오. 그리스도께서 당신의 친구들에게 베푸시는 성령의 온갖 은총과 선물 가운데서 가장 훌륭한 것은 바로 자기를 눌러 이기고, 고통, 모욕, 수치, 불쾌한 것을 그리스도께 대한 사랑 때문에 달게 참아 받는 그것입니다. 하느님의 다른 것들은 자랑거리로 삼을 것이 못됩니다. 그것은 우리 것이 아니라 하느님 것이기 때문입니다. 그러므로 사도께서 말씀하시기를 ’여러분이 가지고 있는 모든 것은 하느님께로부터 받은 것이 아닙니까? 이렇게 다 받은 것인데 왜 받은 것이 아니고 자기의 것인 양 자랑합니까?”(1고린토 4:7)하셨습니다. 그러나 고난과 고통의 십자가는 바로 우리의 것이기 때문에 자랑할 수 있습니다. 사도께서는 ‘내게는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가밖에는 아무것도 자랑할 게 없습니다’(갈라디아 6:14)라고 말씀하셨습니다.“

8. How St. Francis taught Brother Leo That Perfect Joy Is only in the Cross


One winter day St. Francis was coming to St. Mary of the Angels from Perugia with Brother Lea, and the bitter cold made them suffer keenly. St. Francis called to Brother Lea, who was walking a bit ahead of him, and he said: “Brother Leo, even if the Friars Minor in every country give a great example of holiness and integrity and good edification, nevertheless write down and note carefully that perfect joy is not in that.”
And when he had walked on a bit, St. Francis called him again, saying: “Brother Leo, even if a Friar Minor gives sight to the blind, heals the paralyzed, drives out devils, gives hearing back to the deaf, makes the lame walk, and restores speech to the dumb, and what is still more, brings back to life a man who has been dead four days, write that perfect joy is not in that.”

And going on a bit, St. Francis cried out again in strong voice: “Brother Leo, if a Friar Minor knew all languages and all sciences and Scripture, if he also knew how to prophesy and to reveal not only the future but also the secrets of the consciences and minds of others, write down and note carefully that perfect joy is not in that.”

And as they walked on, after a while St. Francis called again forcefully: “Brother Leo, Little Lamb of God, even if a Friar Minor could speak with the voice of an angel, and knew the courses of the stars and the powers of herbs, and knew all about the treasures in the earth, and if he knew the qualities of birds and fishes, animals, humans, roots, trees rocks, and waters, write down and note carefully that true joy is not in that.”

And going on a bit farther, St. Francis called again strongly: “Brother Leo even if a Friar Minor could preach so well that he should convert all infidels to the faith of Christ, write that perfect joy is not there.”

Now when he had been talking this way for a distance of two miles, Brother Leo in great amazement asked him: “Father, I beg you in God’s name to tell me where perfect joy is.”

And St. Francis replied: “When we come to St. Mary of the Angels, soaked by the rain and frozen by the cold, all soiled with mud and suffering from hunger, and we ring at the gate of the Place and the brother porter comes and says angrily: “Who are you?’ And We say: ‘We are two of your brothers.’ And he contradicts us, saying: ‘You are not telling the truth. Rather you are two rascals who go around deceiving people and stealing what they give to the poor. Go away!’ And he does not open for us, but makes us stand outside in the snow and rain, cold and hungry, until night falls-then if we endure all those insults and cruel rebuffs patiently, without being troubled and without complaining, and if we reflect humbly and charitably that that porter really knows us and that God makes him speak against us, oh, Brother Leo, write that perfect joy is there!

“And if we continue to knock, and the porter comes out in anger, and drives us away with curses and hard blows like bothersome scoundrels, saying: ‘Get away from here, you dirty thieves-go to the hospital!-and if we bear it patiently and take the insults with joy and love in our hearts, oh, Brother Leo, write that that is perfect joy!

“And if later, suffering intensely from hunger and the painful cold, with night falling, we still knock and call, and crying loudly beg them to open for us and let us come in for the love of God, and he grows still more angry and says: ‘Those fellows are bold and shameless ruffians. I’ll give them what they deserve!’ And he comes out with a knotty club, and grasping us by the cowl throws us onto the ground, rolling us in the mud and snow, and beats us with that club so much that he covers our bodies with wounds-if we endure all those evils and insults and blows with joy and patience, reflecting that we must accept and bear the sufferings of the Blessed Christ patiently for love of Him, oh, Brother Leo, write: that is perfect joy!

“And now hear the conclusion, Brother Leo. Above all the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit which Christ gives to His friends is that of conquering oneself and willingly enduring sufferings, insults, humiliations, and hardships for the love of Christ. For we cannot glory in all those other marvelous gifts of God, as they are not ours but God’s, as the Apostle says: ‘What have you that you have not received?’

“But we can glory in the cross of tribulations and afflictions, because that is ours, and so the Apostle says: ‘I will not glory save in the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ!”

To whom be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
