제7장 성 프란치스코가 페루지아 호수의 한 섬에서

 

 

제7장

성 프란치스코가 페루지아 호수의 한 섬에서 사순절을 지내며 40주야 동안 단식하고 반쪽의 빵밖에 먹지 않은 일

하느님의 참된 종 성 프란치스코는 인간을 구원하기 위하여 세상에 보내진 제2의 그리스도와 같은 분이었다. 이러한 사실은 열두 동료와의 경애할 공동생활과 감탄할 만한 오묘한 오상에서 더욱 확인되며, 또한 지금 애기하려고 하는 것과 같은 모양으로 사순절에 끊임없이 단식하고 대재를 지킨 것으로도 잘 알 수 있다.

성 프란치스코는 어느 재의 수요일 전날 페루지아 호숫가에 살며 성인을 충실히 따르던 어떤 사람의 집에서 하룻밤을 지내게 되었는데, 바로 그때 하느님께로부터 “호수에 있는 섬에 들어가 사순절을 지내라”는 영감을 받았다. 그래서 성 프란치스코는 이 열심한 사람에게 작은 배로 재의 수요일 전날 밤에 호수의 한 무인도까지 자기를 데려다 달라고 부탁했다. 이 사람은 성인을 대단히 공경하고 있었으므로, 기꺼이 이 분부를 따라 그 뜻대로 섬에 모셔다 드렸다. 이때 성 프란치스코는 작은 빵조각 두 개밖에는 아무것도 가져가지 않았다.

섬에 도착한 다음, 이 친절한 사람이 자기 집으로 돌아가려고 하자. 성 프란치스코는 그에게 자기가 있는 곳을 아무에게도 알리지 말고 또 성 목요일이 되기까지는 결코 찾아오지 말도록 부탁했다. 그는 성인을 섬에 혼자 남기고 돌아왔다.

어둠 속에 남아 있는 성인은 거기에서 몸을 숨길 거처라곤 아무 데도 없었으므로, 빽빽한 숲 덤불과 무성한 가시덤불이 서로 얽혀 조그만 오두막 같기도 하고, 혹은 짐승 굴 같기도 한 곳에 자리를 잡고 기도와 천상 사물들을 묵상하기 시작했다.

이렇게 사순절을 지내는 동안 성인은 그 작은 빵 반쪽 외에는 아무것도 먹거나 마시지 않았다. 그 충실한 사람이 성 목요일에 찾아왔을 때, 그는 빵 두 개 중 고스란히 있는 빵 한 개와 다른 빵 반 조각을 발견하였던 것이다.

40일 동안 아무 음식도 먹지 않고 대재를 지키셨던 복된 예수님의 단식을 존중하는 마음에서, 성 프란치스코는 그 반쪽 빵을 먹은 것으로 믿어지는데 그렇게 하여 이 반쪽 빵을 가지고 자기로부터 허영의 독을 멀리 내던진 후에, 그리스도의 모범을

따라 40 주야의 대재를 지킨 것이다.

성 프란치스코가 이같이 놀라운 고행을 했던 그 장소에서 하느님께서는 성인의 공덕을 어여삐 보시어 많은 기적을 행하셨다. 이 때문에 사람들이 여기에다 집을 짓고 살게 되었는데, 얼마 안 가서 아름다운 큰 마을을 이루었고, “섬의 수도원”이라고 불리우는 수도원도 생겨나게 되었다. 또한 이 마을 사람들은 성 프란치스코가 사순절을 지내신 그 장소를 아직까지도 무천 소중히 여기고 숭배하고 있다.

주; 성 프란치스코가 이 사순절을 보냈던 호수는 트라시메네 호수였다. 카르타고의 용장 한니발이 서기 217년 로마군대를 패배시킨 곳이 바로 이 호수이다. 이 섬에는 지금 두 개의 소성당이 있다.

 

 

 

         
7. About the Wonderful Forth Days’ Fast of St. Francis.


Because St. Francis, the true servant of Christ, was in certain things like another Christ, given to the world for the salvation of people, God the Father willed to make him in many acts conformed and similar to His Son Jesus Christ, as is shown in the venerable group of the twelve companions, in the wonderful mystery of the holy Stigmata, and in the continuous fast of the holy Lent which he kept in this way.

Once when St. Francis was near the Lake of Perugia on Carnival Day, in the home of a devoted friend with whom he had spent the night, he was inspired by God to go and spend Lent on an island of that lake. St. Francis therefore asked his friend, for the love of Christ, to take him in his little boat to an island in the lake where no one lived, and to do this on the night of Ash Wednesday, so that nobody should perceive it.

And that man, because of the great devotion which he had for St. Francis, thoughtfully carried out his wish. He arose during the night and made his little boat ready and rowed him to that island on Ash Wednesday. And St. Francis took along nothing but two small loaves of bread.

When they reached the island and the friend was leaving to return home, St. Francis earnestly asked him not to reveal to anyone that he was there, and not to come for him before Holy Thursday. And so the man left the island, and St. Francis remained there alone.

As there was no building where he could take shelter, he went into a very dense thicket in which many thorn bushes and small trees had made a sort of little cabin or den. And he began to pray and contemplate heavenly things in that place.

And he stayed there all through Lent without eating and without drinking, except for half of one of those little loaves of bread. His devoted friend came for him on Holy Thursday, as they had agreed. And of the two loaves, he found one whole and half of the other. It is believed that St. Francis ate the other half out of reverence for the fast of the Blessed Christ, who fasted forty days and forty nights without taking any material food. And so with that half loaf he drove from himself the poison of pride, while according to Christ’s example he fasted forty days and forty nights.

Later through his merits, God performed many miracles in that place where St. Francis had practiced such marvelous abstinence. From that time men began to build houses on that island and to live there; and in a short while a fine and large walled village was made. And there also is the Place of the Friars Minor which is called the Island. And the men and women of that village still have great reverence and devotion for the place where St. Francis kept that Lent.
