제4장 

하느님의 천사가 스뽈레또 골짜기에 있는 수도원의 원장인 엘리아 형제에게 질문하였으나, 엘리아 형제가 교만하게 대답하므로 그를 떠나 성 야고보 성당으로 가는 길에 있던 베르나르도 형제를 찾아가 그 사실을 말해준 이야기

형제 수도 적고 수도원도 아직 없었던 형제회 초기 어느날, 성 프란치스코는 신심행사를 하려고 몇 명의 형제와 함께 갈리지아의 성 야고보 성당을 향해 떠났는데, 베르나르도 형제도 그중에 섞여 있었다.

일행은 길을 가다가 어떤 마을에 이르러 불쌍한 병자 한 사람을 만났다. 성 프란치스코는 그를 가엾이 여겨 “ 내 아들, 당신은 여기 남아서 저 병자를 돌보기 바랍니다”하고 베르나르도에게 말했다. 그는 겸손히 무릎을 꿇고 머리를 숙여 거룩한 사부의 명을 받들어서 거기에 남고, 성 프란치스코와 다른 동료들은 성 야고보 성당으로 갔다. 목적지에 도착한 그들은 그날 밤을 성당에서 기도로 지새고 있었다. 그때 하느님은 성 프란치스코에게 “세계 각처에 수도원을 많이 세워야 한다”는 계시를 주셨다. 형제회가 온 세상에 퍼져나가서 수를 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 형제들이 많이 불어나게 될 것이기 때문이었다. 이 계시에 따라 성 프란치스코는 그 지방에다 여러 수도원을 세우기 시작했다.

성인은 일을 끝내고, 오던 길을 따라 다시 되돌아가게 되었는데, 가다 보니 베르나르도 형제에게 맡겨준 환자가 완전히 회복되어 있었다. 그래서 베르나르도 형제가 다음해 성 야고보 성당에 가는 것을 허락했고, 성 프란치스코는 스뽈레또 골짜기로 돌아가 맛세오 형제, 엘리아 형제, 그밖에 몇몇 형제들과 같이 조용하고 외딴 곳에 거처를 정했다. 제자들은 성 프란치스코가 기도드릴 때 방해가 되거나 어수선하게 되지 않도록 무척 조심하였다. 그것은 자기 스승을 매우 존경하였고, 또한 사부님이 기도하는 동안에 하느님께서 위대한 일을 계시해 주시는 것을 모두 알고 있었기 때문이었다.

성 프란치스코가 숲속에서 기도하고 있던 어느 날이었다. 여행차림을 한 잘 생긴 청년하나가 수도원 문간에 찾아와, 어찌나 성급하고 요란스럽게 또 오래 동안 문을 두드리는지 형제들은 이 난데없는 “노크” 소리에 몹시 놀랐다. 맛세오 형제가 가서 문을 열고는 그 젊은이에게 “어디서 오신 젊은이이신지, 문을 이상하게 두드리는 것을 보니 아마 전에 여기 와 보신 적이 없으신 것 같군요”하고 말하자 젊은이는 “그러면 어떻게 문을 두드려야 합니까? 하고 물었다.

맛세오 형제는 “천천히 차례로 세 번 두드리시오. 그리고는 이곳 형제가 ‘하늘에 계신 우리 아버지’를 다 외우고 당신께 올 때까지 기다리시오. 만일 우리 형제가 안 나오면 그런 간격으로 한 번 더 두드리십시오” 하였다.

그러자 젊은이는 이렇게 말했다. “몹시 급해서 이같이 세게 문을 두드린 겁니다. 저는 긴 여행 중에 있는 몸으로, 프란치스코 형제를 만나 뵈옵고 이야기하려고 여기까지 왔는데, 그분께서는 지금 숲속에서 묵상하고 계시니 방해하고 싶지는 않습니다. 그 대신 엘리아 형제를 좀 불러주십시오. 현명하신 분임을 제가 알고 있으니, 한 가지 여쭈어 볼 것이 있습니다.”

맛세오 형제는 곧 엘리아 형제에게 가서 그 청년한테 가보라고 하였으나 엘리아 형제는 화를 내면서 가려고 하지 않았다. 그는 어떻게 해야 할지, 또 젊은이에게 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰라 망설였다. 만약 ‘엘리아 형제가 올 수 없다“고 하면 거짓말이 되고, ”엘리아 형제가 화가 나서 오려고 하지 않는다“고 하면 손님에게 나쁜 표양을 보여줄까봐 두려웠기 때문이다.

우물쭈물 꾸물거리면서 되돌아오는데, 청년은 재차 먼저처럼 문을 두드렸다. 맛세오 형제가 문 앞에 가서 “당신은 제가 가르쳐 드린 대로 문을 두드리지 않는군요”하니, 청년은 “엘리아 형제가 오고 싶지 않는게지요” 그렇다면 프란치스코 형제에게 가서 제가 그분과 이야기하고 싶어 왔으나, 기도에 방해를 드리지 않으려고 그런다고 말씀해 주시고, 그 대신 엘리아 형제를 보내 주시도록 전달해 주십시오“하고 부탁했다. 할 수없이 맛세오 형제는 숲속에서 하늘을 우러러보며 기도하고 있는 성인 옆으로 가서, 청년의 말과 엘리아 형제의 답변내용을 모두 말해주었다. 그런데 이 청년은 사람의 모습으로 온 하느님의 천사였던 것이다.

성 프란치스코는 몸을 움직이지도 얼굴을 내리지도 않은 채, 맛세오 형제에게 말했다. “가서 엘리아 형제에게 거룩한 순명으로 그 젊은이를 만나라고 이르시오.”

성 프란치스코의 명령을 전해들은 엘리아 형제는 화가 잔뜩 나서 투덜거리며 거칠게 문을 홱 열어제치고 청년에게 “무얼 원하시오?” 하고 물었다.

청년이 “엘리아 형제여, 그처럼 화를 내지 마십시오, 분노는 마음을 어둡게 만들어 진리를 분별치 못하게 만듭니다” 하니, 엘리아 형제는 “당신은 뭣하러 왔소?”하며 더 퉁명스레 묻자 청년은 “...한가지 묻겠습니다. 그리스도께서 사도들에게 말씀하신 바와 같이, 거룩한 복음을 실천하는 사람들이 자기 앞에 차려내온 음식은 무엇이든지 먹을 수 있는지요? 또 한가지 더 물어보겠는데 누구든지 복음이 허락해 준 자유를 거슬러 제멋대로 어떤 규정을 부과할 수 있는지요?”라고 반문했다.

엘리아 형제는 교만한 말투로 “그런 것쯤은 잘 알고 있소, 그렇지만 당신에게 말하지 않겠소, 당신 일이나 하시요”하고 못마땅히 대꾸했다. 청년은 겸손하게 “나는 그 문제를 당신보다 더 잘 대답할 수 있습니다.”하였다 이 말을 들은 그는 그만 화가 치밀어 문을 쾅 닫고 들어가 버렸다.

조금 후에 그는 이 문제를 곰곰이 생각하는 동안 내부에 의혹이 생겼으나 그것을 풀 수가 없었다. 자기는 형제회 총장으로 있으면서 복음과 성 프란치스코의 회칙에도 없는 것, 즉 작은 형제회의 회원은 누구도 고기를 먹어서는 안 된다고 명령했고, 또 그것을 회헌 속에도 규정해 놓았기 때문이다. 그래서 조금 전의 문제가 자기에게 일부러 던져진 질문임을 명백히 깨달았다. 그것을 어떻게 풀어야 할지 모르고 또 청년의 겸손한 태도와 자기보다 더 잘 대답하겠다고 말하던 것이 생각나 그 청년에게 자기한테 한 질문에 관해 물어보려고, 되돌아가서 문을 열었다. 그러나 그 청년은 이미 사라진 후였다. 엘리아 형제의 교만은 천사와 이야기를 주고받기에 합당치 않았기 때문이다.

바로 이때 성 프란치스코는 이에 대하여 하느님께로부터 모두 계시받았으므로 숲에서 돌아와 “교만한 엘리아 형제, 형제는 우리에게 바르게 가르쳐 주러 온 거룩한 천사를 쫓아버렸소, 그 교만 때문에 형제가 형제회 밖에서 죽게 되지나 않을까 나는 심히 두렵소”하고 엘리아 형제를 큰소리로 엄하게 책망하였다. 그리고 정말 성 프란치스코의 말대로 후일 그는 형제회를 나가서 죽었다.

이 천사는 그날 그곳을 떠나, 같은 시간에 똑같은 모습으로 베르나르도 형제에게 나타났다. 베르나르도 형제는 마침 성 야고보 순례성당으로부터 어느 큰 강변을 따라 돌아오고 있는 중이었는데, 천시는 이태리 말로 “형제여, 하느님의 평화가 함께 하시기를!”하면서 인사했다.

베르나르도 형제는 깜짝 놀랐다. 그러나 그 청년이 잘생겼고, 자기 나라 말로 더구나 즐거운 표정으로 건네주던 평화의 인사를 가만히 생각해 보며 ‘젊은이는 어디서 오셨습니까?“하고 물으니 천사는 ’저는 성 프란치스코가 살고 있는 어느 수도원에서 왔습니다. 그분과 이야기하려고 갔었지만 숲에서 천상 사정을 묵상하고 있었으므로 방해하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그 수도원에는 맛세오 형제, 에지디오 형제, 엘리아 형제께서 살고 계셨으며, 맛세오 형제는 저에게 수도자답게 문 두드리는 법을 가르쳐 주셨고, 엘리아 형제는 제가 던진 질문에 대답하기를 싫어하다가는 나중에 후회하여 다시 저를 만나서 해답을 들으려고 했지만 이미 때가 늦었습니다”라고 말했다. 천사는 계속하여 베르나르도 형제에게 “왜 강을 건너지 않습니까?”하고 묻자. 그는 “물이 깊어 보여 무서워 그럽니다”하고 대답하였다. 천사는 “함께 건너갑시다. 두려워하지 마시오”하고 그의 손을 잡고 눈 깜빡할 사이에 베르나르도 형제를 강 건너편으로 데려다 주었다. 그래서 베르나르도 형제는 바로 이 청년이 하느님이 보내신 천사라는 것을 알아차리고 매우 두려워하였지만, 한편 몹시 기뻐서 큰소리로 ‘복되신 하느님의 천사여! 성함을 좀 말씀해 주십시오“하니 천사는, ”왜 기묘한 내 이름을 묻습니까?“하는 한마디를 남기고는 사라졌다.

베르나르도 형제는 큰 위로로 가득차서 남은 길을 가는 동안 줄곧 뛸 것 같은 기쁨에 차 있었다. 그는 천사가 나타난 날과 시간을 마음에 잘 새겨놓았다가. 성 프란치스코와 여러 동료들이 있는 수도원에 이르러 그 일을 자세하게 모두 이야기해 주자, 듣는 이들은 똑같은 날 같은 시간에 자기들과 베르나르도 형제에게 동시에 천사가 나타났었음을 확실히 깨달았다. 그들은 모두 하느님께 감사를 드렸다.

주: 이 에피소드의 연대를 알기는 매우 어렵다. 성 프란치스코가 스페인에 가는 도중에 있었다고 주장되지만 성 프란치스코가 스페인에 간 적이 있는지 없는지는 분명치 않다. 베르나르도는 1213년 스페인에 있었다. 우리는 이 에피소드에서 1221년 총장으로 선출된 엘리아 형제에게 많은 형제들이 반감을 갖고 있었음을 알 수 있다.

 

 

 

 

          
4. How St. Francis Went to St. James, and about the question that the Angel Asked Brother Elias

In the beginning of the Order, when there were few friars and the Places had not yet been occupied, St. Francis, to satisfy his devotion, went to visit St. James in Galicia, and he took with him some companions, one of whom was Brother Bernard.

And while they were traveling along the road, they found in a certain land a poor sick man for whom St. Francis felt compassion, and he said to Brother Bernard: "Son, I want you to stay here and take care of this sick man."

And Brother Bernard quickly and humbly genuflected and bowed his head, thus accepting the command of the holy Father, and he stayed in that place while St. Francis went on to St. James with his other companions.

When they arrived there and were spending the night in prayer and adoration in the Church of St. James, God revealed to St. Francis in that church that he should found many Places throughout the world, because his Order was destined to spread and grow to a large number of friars. Consequently, as a result of this diving command, he henceforth began to accept Places in various lands.

When he returned along the same road, St. Francis found Brother Bernard. Now the sick man whom he had entrusted to his care had fully recovered. So the following year St. Francis gave Brother Bernard permission to go to St. James. Meanwhile St. Francis went back to the Valley of Spoleto.

And when he was staying in a certain isolated Place-he and Brother Mass대 and Brother Elias and several others- one day St. Francis went into the woods to pray. Now his companions had great reverence for him and they were afraid to disturb his prayers in any way because of the great graces which God gave him in prayer.

And it happened that a very handsome young man, dressed as though prepared to go on a journey, came to the gate of the Place and knocked at such an unusual way of knocking. Brother Masseo went to the gate and opened it and said to the young man: "Son, I think you have never yet come to a gate of the friars because you don's know how to knock gently."

The young man answered: "And how should I knock?"
Brother Masseo said to him: "Knock three times, one knock after another. Then wait until the friar has said on Our Father and comes to you. And if he does not come by that time, knock again."

But the young man replied: "I am in a great hurry because I have to make a long journey-that is why I knock so loudly. I have come here to talk to Brother Francis, but he is now in contemplation in the woods, and therefore I don't want to disturb him. So go and send Brother Elias to me, for I have heard that he is very wise, and I want to ask him a question."

Brother Masseo went and told Brother Elias to go the young man, but as he was proud and irritable he became angry and refused to go. Then Brother Masseo did not know what to do or what to say to the young man, because if he said that Brother Elias was angry and did not want to come, he was afraid of giving the young man a bad example.

Meanwhile, as Brother Masseo delayed in coming, the young man knocked again as before. Then the friar went back to the gate and said to the young man: "You did not knock the way I told you to do."

Now the young man was an angel of God, and foreseeing Brother Masseo's answer, he said: "Brother Elias does not want to come to me, so go to Brother Francis and tell him that I have come to speak to him, but as I do not want to disturb him in his prayers, tell him to sent Brother Elias to me."

Then Brother Mass대 went to Brother Francis, who was praying in the woods with his face turned toward Heaven. And he told him all the young man's message and Brother Elias' answer.

Without moving or lowering his face, St. Francis said: "Go and tell Brother Elias to go to the young man immediately, under obedience."

When Brother Elias heard St. Francis' order, he was so angry that when he went to the gate, he opened it violently, making a great noise and disturbance, and said to the young man: "What do you want?"

And the young man replied: “Take care, Brother, not to be angry, as you appear to be, because anger darkens the mind and prevents it from discerning to truth.”
Then Brother Elias said: “Tell me what you want!”

And the young man answered: “I ask you whether it is lawful for observers of the holy Gospel to eat whatever is set before them, as Christ said to His Disciples. And I also ask you whether it is lawful for any man to impose on observers of the holy Gospel anything that is contrary to the liberty of the Gospel?”

Brother Elias replied arrogantly: “I know the answer very well, but I won’t tell you. Go on your way.”

The young man said: “I know the answer to that question better than you do.”
Then Brother Elias angrily slammed the gate shut and went away. And he began to think over the question and to be puzzled and he could not find the answer. For when he was Vicar of the Order, he had dared to make a regulation, beyond the Gospel and beyond the Rule of St. Francis, that no friar in the Order, he had dared to make a regulation, beyond the Gospel and beyond the Rule of St. Francis, that no friar in the Order could eat meat, so that question was aimed directly at him. Not knowing how to solve the problem, and reflecting that the young man was humble and that he had said he could answer that question better than Brother Elias could, he went back to the gate and opened it in order to ask the young man about the question. But when he opened the gate, no one was there, and he could not find the young man was an angel of God, and he had not waited because Brother Elias in his pride was not worthy to speak with an angel.

When this had happened, St. Francis, to whom all had been revealed by God, came back from the woods and strongly scolded Brother Elias in a loud voice, saying: “You do wrong, proud Brother Elias, for you drive away the holy angels who come to visit and instruct us. And I ell you, I strongly fear that your pride will make you end your days outside this Order.” And so it happened to him later, as St. Francis had prophesied to him, for he died outside the Order.

On the same day and at the same hour as that angel went away, he appeared in the same form to Brother Bernard, who was returning from St. James and was standing on the bank of a broad river which he could not cross. And he greeted Brother Bernard in his own language, saying: “God give you peace, good Brother.”

Brother Bernard marveled at the young man’s good looks and the language of his own native land, and also at his peaceful greeting and joyful features, and he asked him: “Where are you from, good young man?”

The angel replied: “I have come from the Place where St. Francis is staying, and I went to speak with him, but I was unable to do so because he was contemplating God in the woods, and I did not want to disturb him. And Brother Masseo and Brother Giles and Brother Elias were staying with him in that Place. And Brother Masseo taught me how to knock at your gate the way the friars do. But Brother Elias, because he did not want to answer the question which I asked him, later regretted it and wanted to hear and see me, but could not do so.”

And after saying these words, the angel said to Brother Bernard: “Dear friend, why are you hesitating to cross the river?”

He replied: “Because I am afraid of the deep water I see.”

And the angel said: “Let us cross over together-don’t be afraid!”
And taking his hand, in an instant he deposited Brother Bernard safely on the other side of the river.

Then Brother Bernard realized that he was one of God’s angels, and with great devotion and reverence and joy he said in a loud voice: “O blessed angel of God, tell me your name!”

The angel replied: “Why do you ask my name, which is wonderful?”

And having said that, he disappeared and left Brother Bernard very happy, so that he was filled with joy during all the rest of his journey. And he noted the day and hour when the angel had appeared to him. And when he came to the Place where St. Francis was staying with his above-mentioned companions, he told them the whole story in detail. Therefore, they knew for sure that that same angel had appeared to them and to him on the same day and at the same hour. And they gave thanks to God. Amen.
